A week ago, my wife, daughter, and I went to visit my sister’s for my older niece’s tenth birthday. Their other daughter’s eight in May. Well, thing is I wasn’t born Catholic but Southern Baptist and my wife was born Jewish. Well, my niece certainly has the Holy Spirit in her and asked if she could go with us to Mass. My sister decided they should all go that Sunday. Well, my niece said that going to their Baptist church makes her feel closer to our Black heritage and it’s fun because of the singing but in Mass, she felt closer to God than she ever had in their regular church and that going to church is about Him not our skin color. My sister said she felt something otherworldly too there. I thought they’d want to go to at least five more Masses but no, they’ve decided to go through RCIA. They just need sponsors.

That is so awesome!

If your sister’s family lives in a largish city, they might see if there’s a Catholic church in the area with a strong African-American heritage. Historically, there are often “ethnic” churches in the larger dioceses–a Polish church, an Irish church, etc. In a town in which I lived for some time, there was a Catholic church that was strongly affiliated with African-American Catholics. (Of course, anyone of any background is welcome at any of these churches.) The music was similar to African Baptist music in style, and while the Mass was quite reverent and beautifully said, one could see the African influence in it, too. Attending such a church, whether regularly or from time to time, might help your niece feel more at home. Just a thought! 🙂 Whatever their eventual parish home, I wish them all the best.

Thank you for sharing that story–it’s really great to hear a “success” story!

When I was growing up we had no black families in our parish none. Until recently there were no black families in the parish I attended in CA. We have a few black families in our parish here in AZ and I am grateful for ever one of them. I hope that your ethnicity will not be the major reason to choose a parish. We are ONE, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic. 🙂

Awesome!

You never know, at some point they may have a black priest. My parish now has a priest who is African. We had another who was visiting from Africa, but he has gone home.

Semper, thank you for sharing this awesome, beautiful news with us!!! How wonderful!!! I will keep them in my prayers!

I know that. If my niece felt closer to God in Mass than in he regular church, I’m sure my sister and her husband will consider going forward.

What a wonderful story. May God bless them on this journey.
