As I said on the “UNfavorite” thread, my favorite hymn is Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence. The theology and melody are perfectly combined. It sends chills down my spine.

Wow - *Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence *is the first hymn that I thought of before I ever saw your post.

I have the melody from cyberhymnal.org bookmarked on my computer. It has all the verses so I can sing along. When I’m home alone, of course. 🙂

It sends chills down my spine, too. I thought I was the only one…

As strange as it may sound, my favorite hymn is one that I
learned as a Baptist, and George Beverley Shea used to sing
at Wheaton College. But then, when I became a Catholic,
I heard it in the Catholic Church! I wondered if that was because
of Vatican II, or were the hymns interchangeable? The hymn
is “How Great Thou Art”, and I notice it is a favorite of several
people on the forum.

Schubert’s Ave Maria 👍
Jubilate Deo (suprisingly, the best arrangement I’ve ever heard was by the Mormon composer Mack Wilberg.)
Adoremus Te
Ave Verum Corpus
Eternal Father (the Navy Hymn)
Gloria

I fell in love with all of these during my public school & college years as a member of the choir.

“Holy God We Praise Thy Name”
“Ave Maria” (I like both versions)
“On Eagles Wings”
“Panis Angelicus”
“Hosea”
“Be Not Afraid”
“On This Day O Beautiful Mother”
“Gift of Finest Wheat”

I also like Mary Jo Stetson and Marie Bellet
And I’m acquiring a taste for Gregorian Chant 👍

I don’t remember the name of my favorite but it’s basically John chapter 6 put to music. It’s a great communion song. As a convert I love it because that’s one of the chapters that made me know the Catholic Church is the true church.

I believe it’s “I’m the Bread of Life” but again I’m not sure.

Holy God We Praise Thy Name
Ave Maria
Spem in Alium
Miserere mei
Tantum Ergo
O’Salutaris Hostia
Te Deum
Salve Regina
-Ambrosian Chants

Missa Papae Marcelli
-Angus Dei
-Credo
-Gloria
-Sanctus
-Kyrie

Gregorian Nobertine Chants
-Confiteor
-Angus Dei
-Credo
-Gloria
-Sanctus
-Kyrie

Adore Te - Godhead Here in Hiding - by St Thomas Aquinas translated by Fr Gerard Manly Hopkins S.J.
The definitive hymn about the Real Presence

We Stand For God -

Firmly I Believe and Truly - John Henry Newman - great hymn on the Trinity 🙂

Ave Verum Corpus, although there is much close competition.

Is there any particular theological reason why I’ve never heard “Nearer My God to Thee” sung in a Catholic Church?

For the best commentary on music in the contemporary American Catholic Church, read Thomas Day’s classic book, “Why Catholics Can’t Sing”.

“God, in His wisdom, noticed that the Catholic Church in America lacked persecution; and so, he sent it liturgists.” - Peter Kreeft

O Lord, please deliver us from the music of the Glory & Praise Hymnal!

I’ll chime in on this (no pun intended) 😉

“Holy Holy Holy” by Reginald Heber. To this day when I sing this song I get chills up my spine. Of course, it’s based on the worship service in heaven in Revelation, so that may be part of it.

“I Cannot Tell” by William Fullerton. Beautiful hymn, and it also used Londonderry (the tune for “Danny Boy”) as its tune.

“Of the Father’s Love Begotten” by Aurelius Prudentius. Wonderful hymn about the eternal Son of God and His works.

“Veni Creator Spiritus” by Rabanus Marus. A great hymn to listen to in the original Latin.

I also have a CD of Chrysostom’s Greek liturgy done to music and I must say it seems to be one of the most God-centered and worshipful compositions I have ever heard.

I just have to point out the tune for “Danny Boy” was known as the “Derry Air”. LOL! County Derry was changed to Londonderry after Northern Ireland and Ireland split.

I love Gonoud’s version of “Ave Marie”
“Prayer of Saint Francis”
“Be Not Afraid” (always brings tears to my eyes)
“Wahtsoever you do”
“Let There Be Peace on Earth”

I look forward to “O come, O come Emannuel” at Advent and
“Jesus Christ is Risen Today” at Easter.

Love,
Annie

Many people here have said that Schubert’s *Ave Maria * is among their favorite hymns.

I recently gave a talk on Marian hymns through the ages, and surprised my audience by telling them that until the 1960s or so, Schubert’s *Ave Maria * was not officially allowed to be sung in a Catholic Church – and I have run into an occasional church in recent years that still frowns on its use.

In 1825 Schubert was commissioned by poet Sir Walter Scott to put the *Ave Maria * to music for a setting of his poem The Lady of the Lake.

The Catholic Church long considered Schubert’s *Ave Maria * to be a “secular show tune,” just as it did Wagner’s March from Lohengrin (“Here Comes the Bride”).

Just a wee bit of musical trivia for you!

Also, I like “How Great Thou Art” and “Ave Maria.” The latter is a bit hard for most of us to sing, though.

I love “There is a Balm in Gilead.” It is not a Catholic hymn but a Negro spiritual.

Other favorites are Ave Verum Corpus by Mozart, Cantique de Jean Racine by Faure, and Ruht wohl from St John’s Passion, by Bach.

I am a child of the 60’s. I have no knowledge of Latin. What is the meaning of Salve Regina? I understand that many people find comfort and beauty in Latin songs but you have to realize that the number of people who understand the words are decreasing every day.
As for me Amazing Grace is the most beautiful song. I sang my babies to sleep with it. My children know all the verses by heart.

The Hail Holy Queen prayer is a pretty close translation of the Salve Regina. My favorite begins “Mary, we greet thee, mother and Queen all merciful”, and ends 'O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary." It’s not too late to learn a little Latin, and a little chant. It will put you in touch with our 2000 year living tradition!
