That’s fine but I liked seeing the awareness of the disease raised even though it doesn’t have the same impact on me as it once did. In spite of the fact that ALS took my mom it is not one of my causes. I can’t support every movement I want to with the same effort and energy. I pick the ones I’m most passionate about and if I can’t support hands on I donate; if I don’t have $$ for it I try to do something hands on. And if I can put the French flag on my profile pic for a couple of weeks I’ll do that, too. And smiled everytime saw or heard “ALS” for a few weeks a couple of years ago because I heard those letters more than I ever did before it touched my life and in a much more positive way. Did me no good personally, but I know those who had been and would be diagnosed with it would appreciate people knowing about it.

The Russian angle actually gets at the heart of my confusion. More innocent people died in a plane bombing. Yet I guess anti Russian bias is still alive because I don’t recall seeing a single Russian flag anywhere? To those who have the French flag why no Russian solidarity?

But they had to start somewhere. Did you miss the part where I said I don’t have much to do with that ALS stuff anymore? I’m serve on a board for a issue that has never affected me but it’s still important to me. It doesn’t mean that I’m going to ignore what else is going on it the rest of the world. I’m getting a lot of good stuff in my feed about what is going on and I can share it and maybe, just maybe those who have a different belief will reconsider their bigotry, although it runs deep so I don’t have that much hope. But I will continue to post positive things instead of negative along with fun stuff. And if they block me, oh well, no more fun stuff.

There probably is some anti-Russian (also likely, anti-Putin) bias. I remember some of the first reports saying Russian officials denying there was a bomb or even an explosion. It’s kind of hard to get behind something like that when the Russian feds won’t even acknowledge it.

The Russians have flown over a hundred sorties and bombed over 200 targets. We will see what the French response is.

When all the French flag stuff started on Facebook, a friend of mine posted a long rant about how meaningless and bigoted it was. He pointed to all the other terrorist attacks over the last year and wanted to know where the flags were for those. I felt he had a good point, although I disagreed with his claim that none of his friends said they were praying for the Russians, Kenyans, etc. (I even showed him a couple of my posts to disprove him). His overall sentiment was valid, though. Showing support or solidarity for this group because they look, act or believe like you while ignoring that group which just happens to be different kind of takes away some of the meaning of your gesture.

The idea of not being able to concentrate on one thing for long like a dog if it sees a squirrel. I once was a fighter pilot and when I banked left…SQUIRREL!

This is one I see quite a bit. Some of my younger friends, or my kids’ friends are very exemplary of this. If CNN or Mark Zuckerberg don’t keep reminding them, they’re going to forget about it in a week or two. Some of the comments made in response to the above-mentioned friend were from people who knew nothing about or had completely forgotten the other terrorist attacks he mentioned. Then again, none of them were Facebook flag-worthy.

There are efforts within and without the NFL that are addressing the issue of DV and SA. And it isn’t just breast cancer. The Patriots cheerleaders wore the number of a Bengal’s player whose daughter had cancer. You know, to show support.

ETA: Whoa, would you look at that. I just showed support for a tweep who is going through something I have, just letting them know I care and that I’m thinking of them. I can’t make it better in anyway. I think it’s an act of mercy like St. Faustina wrote in her diary.

That is a little different. The Bengals were selling Devon Still jerseys and donating 100% of the profits to the pediatric cancer research. Stills reported that the Bengals had raised over $400,000 pediatric cancer research efforts and the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in the first FOUR DAYS. (Sean Payton of the Saints personally donated $10,000 for 100 jerseys which were distributed to kids in the Cincinnati area.)

As for the Paris attacks, if you put a flag on social media, which is fine, you’ll do the best to accompany it with what you have done in a concrete way, such as donating to the French Red Cross, the Secours populaire française, et cetera. You might even publish this link:

If you don’t do that, this is an excellent time to remind yourself to donate blood. If you can’t, find someone who can, and encourage them to go for both of you!

In short, though, when you make a “show” of solidarity, use it as a way to remind people that concrete help is needed for the victims of tragedies and crime, too.
