On facebook people changing profiles to have colors of France's flag

It is not just Facebook. I watched an nfl game this weekend where the outside of the stadium was lit up in France’s flag. Or the fact that for a month the league requires its players to wear pink. Meanwhile players are throwing girlfriends onto a bed of guns and beating them. But that breast cancer, they got that covered:rolleyes:

I think I have finally reached the age where I look at the enthusiastic efforts of the young seem futile and misdirected. So much potential with technology and media and so little thought.

You keep saying that but you have yet to refute it with anything more than you think differently. Can you show it stopping Islamic terrorism or comforting the tears of a child who’s parent died in the attack?

The Scriptures indicate that charity that exists as lip service only is a very old problem:

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,” but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead. (James 2:14-17)

That is not to say that efforts that sway public opinion are dead, not at all. It is to say that only asking for an effortless show of support can actually have an unanticipated negative effect on the level of actual support that will be offered.

That is counter-intuitive, until you think about it. Once you consider the emotional state all of us get into when something awful happens to someone else, it actually makes sense. Our desire to help, being unformed, could be sent into a direction that feels good but accomplishes little. Once we satisfy our anxiety to help by doing something, we feel less anxiety to act generally and therefore we less anxious to act in a practical way.

Now–if the little flag on your Facebook page were the internet equivalent of those little buttons people wear that say “I gave blood today”–that is, if you only allow yourself to put it up when you’ve actually done something or other–then that is a diferent matter!

Of course I can’t show that but I didn’t claim it could. I did say that I appreciated seeing the support around the world after 9/11, including the event that a PP described. I hope this does the same.

Aw, that’s kind of sad. I find enthusiasm much more inspiring than cynicism, even when it comes from youth who aren’t sure how to direct it.

Well, if wearing pink brings awareness to breast cancer and creates discussion and women being reminded to get their mammograms, then why in the blazes does that REALLY bother you? How is that offensive?

Yes, **some **players are dirtbags and sleezy and immoral, but there are MANY devout Christians among them. Honestly, I don’t even see how the two scenarios relate and why the pink bothers you? Seriously? A few years ago, my hometown football team wore pink wristbands during a game in support of my aunt who was dying of breast cancer. She had been the preschool teacher for MANY of the young men on that team when they were in PreK. Did it change the outcome the she eventually passed away a few months later? Sadly, no. But, I’m telling you that their show of solidarity actually DID mean something to my family.

Honestly, you remind me a lot of my husband. He’s a curmudgeon about things like this as well. You’re too young to get that sour on life already 😉

There are efforts within and without the NFL that are addressing the issue of DV and SA. And it isn’t just breast cancer. The Patriots cheerleaders wore the number of a Bengal’s player whose daughter had cancer. You know, to show support.

ETA: Whoa, would you look at that. I just showed support for a tweep who is going through something I have, just letting them know I care and that I’m thinking of them. I can’t make it better in anyway. I think it’s an act of mercy like St. Faustina wrote in her diary.

Looking all over for the thread about posting the Russian airliner that was bombed by Isis (they now claim to have a video of the bomb in a soda can). Can’t find the Russian flag Facebook thread. If someone finds one post it please.
