We are discussing communion, which is the Lord’s Supper. It distinctly shows the fulfillment of the old covenant with the new and everlasting covenant. When you compare the two covenants, it should be easier for people to realize the importance of the Eucharist and how it follows the example of the Passover, and should be celebrated perpetually. It should also aid anyone from thinking of it as a ‘pagan’ ritual.

Why do you find it objectionable enough to question why it’s on this thread?
Prodigal, please.

My point was that you wrote no REASON, no context from the preceding posts, no connection. You simply posted on a new topic with new material. I was asking for clarification, not challenging its legitimacy. Chill out.

Did you actually read the information posted?

If anyone finds it ‘off topic’, I apologize.

I take the wafer at Communion but I have been known to pass on the wine because I really don’t like the taste of wine all that much. I would much rather the priest used grape juice. I like the taste of grape juice and then I wonder sometimes about people who have had problems with alcohol and how one sip could trigger a desire for more. And I’m not so sure about drinking after hundreds of people from the same cup. I’d like to see grape juice in paper cups. I’ve had Catholics refuse to offer me their hand in the sign of peace because they did not want to touch my hand I’m guessing because of germs. 🤷

Anyway, because I have the capacity to understand both beliefs, a literal physical RP and a symbolic and spiritual presence, let me try to explain the non literal view to my fellow Catholics since we Catholics already understand the Catholic view.

ECFs don’t necessarily carry a lot of weight with some. And just as some Catholics do not take the 6 day, 24 hr evening and morning was a day Creation literally or a whole host of other things in the Bible literally, then some Christians do not take "This is my body, eat and drink my body and blood literally.

They may believe because Christ had not died yet at the Last Supper the supper was symbolic and they emphasize the “do this in remembrance of me” part.

Jn 6 they may take to be symbolic because Christ is talking alot about believing in Him. Eat, chew, knaw, all of that symbolic for “eat”. Chew on this. Knaw at it. Really really believe in it. It being Christ came down from heaven to sacrifice His life on the cross for us all. Those walking away walked away from that belief. The belief of Jesus being sent from heaven to save us all. In Jn 6:63 Christ says what gives life is God’s Spirit. And hopefully God’s spirit is with us all as we celebrate.

And some people do have trouble with the idea of eating flesh and blood even with the Catholic teaching of glorified flesh and blood.

So anyway no need for my fellow Catholics to come bashing me. In the spirit of the forum we are on and the thread, I post only in hope this helps us to understand each other better. Catholics understanding other beliefs and visa versa. It’s all a matter of faith, interpretation, and belief for all. And in unity with all who believe in what He did for us on the cross, I pray may His Peace shine upon us all.

There are things carnally discerned and spiritually discerned. The Eucharist requires spiritual examination.

Joh 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth: the flesh profiteth nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

1Co 2:14 But the sensual man perceiveth not these things that are of the Spirit of God. For it is foolishness to him: and he cannot understand, because it is spiritually examined.
1Co 2:15 But the spiritual man judgeth all things: and he himself is judged of no man.
1Co 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

You take the “WAFER” at communion and you pass on the WINE because it tastes bad??? And you are more enlightened than I???

You will never convince me you are Catholic, or understand the teachings of the Church and scripture and call my Lord a wafer!!!

If you want grape juice go to the local Baptist Church, they will bring you in for juice. Then you can stand in front of the congregation and get saved, because everybody knows those Catholics are not saved, oh wait I am baptized.

Who are to think you are so much more intelligent than us simpletons who only know the Catholic view. In another thread you argued the point that the Church is wrong to not allow non Catholics to receive “if they are called”. This is my challenge to you, Cmatt, you need to refrain from receiving until you properly discern the body and blood of Jesus, because you have missed the boat.

You have no idea what the Church teaches about the Eucharist, nor do you believe truth. If you would you wouldn’t call Jesus a WAFER!!!

Cmatt-
“Anyway, because I have the capacity to understand both beliefs, a literal physical RP and a symbolic and spiritual presence, let me try to explain the non literal view to my fellow Catholics since we Catholics already understand the Catholic view.”

You have some serious confidence issues; your ego gets in the way of the truth. What are the Catholic views Cmatt???

Sorry sir, this is post reformation, post martin Luther rewrite of scripture. The words used in scripture are definitely not meaning what you assert here. Put this verse in context and in it’s entirety, “It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”

The simple meaning of this verse is that the flesh, our humanness, cannot understand. One must look at these teachings in the light of the spirit, scripture. From your interpretation you would have walked away too. Look at the precursor to John 6, Exodus 12. The Passover is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. There is so much more He wants for you and you block Him out, because of your humanity. You need to look at scripture in its entirety in context and in the Spirit, not in your human weakness.

I have discussed with you Cmatt on several occasions, you keep telling me I misread you saying you don’t understand. You refute me because you say that you do, but you are a Catholic with no foundation, otherwise you would not refer to the Eucharist in the manner in which you do, disrespectful to the Lord and the Church.

Cmatt

How is it that you posting disbelief will somehow bring us together? Then you cry when we call you down for speaking ignorance of the faith. Truth doesn’t change; it is not a matter of interpretation inside the Church. The truth has been there since the very beginning, one only needs to discern the truth and accept it or move on to his style of Christianity. Catholicism is obviously not your cup of tea. On the other hand, if you mean what you say, you would learn what your Church really does say and teach and become a fruitful member, and not a detractor. As I told you in another thread, your words have meaning!

Cmatt-

This is a very true statement!!! Those who left in the bible are those who leave today. “…many of His disciples said, ‘This saying is hard; who can accept it?’ Since Jesus knew that the disciples were murmuring about this, He said to them, ‘Does this shock you?’”

Well Cmatt, does this shock you? Do you find this saying hard to accept? Will you also leave?😦

Matt:

You’ll get no “bashing” from me!

Shalom.
You’ll get no bashing from me either, but you will be corrected on Catholic belief and teaching, as it is obvious Cmatt is lacking if he is in fact Catholic.

👍 There must be something in the water. I’m finding more ignorance from Catholics than usual on a number of threads. As John Paul, II said “The greatest threat to Christianity is Christians”. Watering down truth to appease others does no one any good.

Nothing shocks me anymore, Lapey, but oh my did you even take the time to read my post? I used the words “wafer” and “wine” only because it is what it looks and taste likes. That’s all. You surely do not think the body and blood of Christ looks and tastes like flesh and blood when you consume Him at the Eucharist do you? Of course not.

For convincing do you need a certified copy of my Baptismal record with the proper notations of the other Sacraments noted on the back? Oh no wait. I see further along you do admit I am a Catholic although you had to assume I have no foundation. But thank you, Lapey. Just admitting I am is a start.

Lapey, never once do I presume you will not be saved, nor do I entertain any desire to be a Baptist so I have no idea what you are talking about there. 🤷

I have no need to inform Catholics of the Catholic belief on this thread, Lapey. Because we already know the Catholic Church view is a literal one. I was merely trying to help fellow Catholics understand another view. I thought that was the point of the thread. 🤷

Lapey, did I not try to point out that to some others the tradition may not carry as much weight for them so I don’t understand what your point about post reformation was to mean for them.

And uh no, Lapey. I would not have walked away from our Lord.

Now if it is alright with you, I have not a regular meal, nor a small meal, not breakfast nor lunch today. So with your permission I am going to have a cup of juice. Peace.

Cute analogy. Only one problem. You cannot give eternal life. Only God can do that. If you give your life to another person they will still die. Don’t get me wrong. I understand that there is no greater gift than to lay one’s life down for another. But that act will not give them eternal life (it may result in eternal life for you).
What were we given as a result of belief in the Messiah?

John 7:38 - “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.

Living Water is the Holy Spirit, is it not…which flows from the believer in Messiah?

But I blaspheme? Why? Because I am just a man who makes myself to be like God?

But is it not written in scripture that “Ye are gods?” If scripture called them gods, to whom the Word of God is given - and the scripture cannot be broken - you now suggest that those who have God in them…who were charged to spread The Kingdom of God/The Love of God/ The Life of God/ The Body of God - to give eternal life to those who lack it - “you speak heresy; you blaspheme”, why? Because I act like a son of God?

If I’m not doing to will of our Father, then don’t believe in me. But if I am, and you still don’t believe, at least believe in the end result: that more people get the message and believe in Salvation, that the Holy Spirit of the Father is in me as it is in you…as it is newly in them.
So you don’t believe in the Trinity. Sorry, I think I’ll take the opinion of a Church who was there when Christ walked the earth and understood Him in His native language and who has pondered these things for over 2000 years. What you are saying has already been condemned by the Church as heresy.

As to your last comment, I would suggest that you be the first to open your eyes before you start preaching to the rest of us.
Words can be no more plainly given, Steve.

And who is it that believes in him? Those that DO his will. What is is will? “Take and eat, this is my body which will be given for you. Take and drink, this is my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. DO THIS in remembrance of me”.

Even the demons believe in Jesus. It requires more than just belief. It requires DOING his will.
But I blaspheme? Why? Because I am just a man who makes myself to be like God?
If that’s what you believe then yes, you blaspheme.

Try as I might, I cannot make sense out of this statement. If you would like to try and reword it for me I’ll try to answer.

It is precisely your message that is the problem. You deny the reality of the Holy Eucharist and “lean unto your own understanding” rather than accepting the teaching of the Church that Christ founded. You ask me to “believe in you” rather than believe you. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that your statement is just poorly worded and that you don’t have a Messiah complex.
Words can be no more plainly given, Steve.

My dear brother Cmatt,

Please feel free to eat, and/or drink. Your brain needs the nurishment.

You cannot say something then deny what you meant. You called the body of Christ a wafer, and His Blood wine. I can expect this type of disrespect for the Church and Jesus in His Eucharistic form but not Catholics.

Your words matter, you cannot change the meaning. You are not bringing anyone into His Church, you are giving them more reason to not see a difference between the Catholic Church and some other denomination. as another poster stated, Christians who water down Christianity are the worst enemy to Christianity!

And uh no, Lapey. I would not have walked away from our Lord.
QUOTE]

PS. With the wafer remark, you have left. You told Him you don’t really believe what He gave us is real.

Someone referred to Peter as dumb and arrogant and a poor leader in another thread. His comments to Jesus in this John 6 discourse shows just how smart and how good of a leader he was, “…to whom shall we go, you have the words of eternal life.”

Peter didn’t understand how he could eat the flesh of Jesus either, but he stayed and believed despite not knowing. Now who is the better leader, Peter or any Catholic who denounces the Church teaching because of his own opinions?

It doesn’t matter what context you used it or what you meant. If you truly believe what the Eucharist is, you would have not even thought to use that. Nor would you make the comments about the Church allowing non Catholics to receive.

See, your words have meanings. You cannot say one thing and tell me they don’t mean that, or they mean something different. What a Catholic who understands the Eucharist would have done is make your point in a way that describes and is filled with respect for what you are talking about, not demean the same.

Lapey, I see I need to turn my other cheek. I suggest you read Matt 5 about peacemakers and persecution. I’m done talking to you right now because you seemngly want to argue and twist my words for your own meaning. Peace.

My dear brother Cmatt,

You are lying when you claim that you do not “bash.”

This is as ripe a denigration as I have seen around here. The comment is ad hominem, and snidely familiar with the “my dear brother” salutation. You are stating that his brain is deficient or impaired from malnourishment.

You are also a blatant hypocrite now after having called me “arrogant” in questioning a practice. And then you call someone brain deficient?

we see you for what you are now

Good for you. I took a lower road and called him on it. I will try to be better, and follow your example.
