To the fact that French President Nicholas Sarkozy who is pro choice & divorced more than once was honored at the Vatican with the honorary canon of St. John Laterean Basilica in Rome while some of us ‘radical’ conservatives are making such a stink about Obama being honred at Notre Dame.

I know this will come up in family discussions today since most of my family are the ‘liberal’ kind of Catholics.

Thanks.

This article might help:

teaattrianon.blogspot.com/2009/03/honorary-canon.html

“This honor was not bestowed upon President Sarkozy due to his personal merits or personal wealth and power, but solely because he is the French head of state . . .”

“The Kings of France who followed Henry IV were accorded the same honorary office of canon, as have some of the French presidents, including Sarkozy. It is not because of the personal prestige of any of those men, rather it is clear that the Holy See has seen the importance of emphasizing the tie between the Lateran basilica, the Pope’s own Church, and the people of France.”

From the comments section*:*

“The only way that the two situations would be comparable would be if Notre Dame invited a President of the United States to the commencement every single year because of some long tie between Notre Dame and the U.S Presidency. But since every year they invite a different notable to speak, it is not quite the same as the Vatican making the French head of state an honorary canon at St. John Lateran. The latter is to honor the centuries old connection between the Church and the Eldest Daughter of the Church. It is not honoring Sarkozy in himself.”

Good luck with the Fam 😃

Notre Dame did say that it was their custom to give an honorary degree to the President of the United States. I did notice that they left out Bill Clinton.

I read the recent news that at least five people have been arrested in handcuffs during anti-abortion demonstrations before Obama’s commencement address at ND.
Norma McCorvey, who identified as the “Roe” in the infamous Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion was arrested. She’s now a pro-life. I bet she’s more than thankful to God for what she’s going through at this moment by showing solidarity to those who suffer. She’s undoing what years ago was the beginning of so much evil for this country.
We need to pray for the Holy Spirit to continue guiding her until the last consequences. She’s now part of our militant Church.
I do not understand the president’s statement that he supports abortion rights but says the procedure should be rare?
Is he saying that a baby need to be killed with gentleness? or choose what baby should die? I totally do not understand; my IQ must be very low. 😊
In any case may God have mercy on our president and all the pro-death!

I have heard her (Norma McCorvey) speak she never had the abortion and IMHO was the pawn they needed to force their goal of “eugenics” on this once great country of ours.

Listening to the speech—Oh Brother!!!

Abortion–It’s just another political issue, let’s keep the discussion “civil” and welcoming of opposing views. I’ll lay odds he wasn’t as open to accept the apartheid view of the South Africans.

He didn’t seem as welcoming to George Bush’s views on national security, the Gitmo detainees, etc. As I recall, he screamed for a date certain to end the things he considered evil—which tells me, he doesn’t consider the killing of post abortion born alive babies, as “evil”

God bless the one gentleman in back of Obama on the dais who did not applaud or acknowledge his words.

It disturbs me that these speeches by both Fr. Jenkins and President Obama seem to not take a stand on ANYTHING! It’s like both of them are talking out of both sides of their mouths!

Granted - the audience, graduates, and those who supported Obama are hearing what they want to hear - and these two speaker are making it sound so wonderful and so pretty. But it won’t mask their true intentions on the issues of life - so many people are going to be duped!

God have mercy on us! :gopray2:

Watching this live on FOX , it’s hard not to despair… But our hope is never in man or his “ability to reason” as I keep hearing over and over in the President’s speech.:hmmm: I’m going to depend on Christ and His Word and Holy Mother Church… I’d rather be hauled off with the protesters than stand with the deceived. I love our President and I will pray for his heart’s conversion.

"Anyone who is so “progressive” as not to remain in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever remains in the teaching has the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him in your house or even greet him; for whoever greets him shares in his evil works," 2 John 9-11 NAB

In addition to what wisdom said: the fact that the Vatican does something does not make that something Catholic. The Vatican–as your liberal Catholic family will no doubt agree on other days–has been responsible for some terrible and starkly un-Catholic injustices in its time.

Indications that the Vatican doesn’t care about this are only the latest iteration in a millenia-old cycle of a badly dysfunctional hierarchy with an inability to respond in an approrpriate or timely manner to the facts on the ground. Throw in a bit about the sex abuse scandal. They’ll love that.

The fact that we nonetheless hold the Magisterium infallible is just that much cooler in light of the constant failures and evils committed by high-ranking members of the Church.

The phrase “either hot or cold be” came to mind as I listened to the lukewarm words of Jenkins…

I would characterize President Jenkin’s remarks as a positively glowing endorsment of Obama.

What’s a matter of a few million dead babies, as long as we keep the discussion civil and friendly?

**“So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of my mouth.” (Rev 3:16)
**

Don’t let the powerful frame the argument, take away their misguided power, take positive action, inform your family, inform your friends and acquaintances. Do not wait for someone else, do not wait for your Priest, your Bishop or your brother, do what you can to defend the Truth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

We are called to be loving and compassionate, but we are also called to witness to the Truth, **no matter what the cost to us personally!
**

My mother was a 12 year old girl in Germany in 1939. Because so few stood up and would challenge the Nazis, her life was ruined and 40 million innocent people died.

We have much more freedom, so much more power and we have allowed 50 million innocent babies to be murdered since 1972!

Who will have to answer???

Some day Jesus will ask each one of us; "Why didn’t you try to save my innocent children?"

i can only say “mercy” because i have done nothing but talk, nothing but take from those who have given so much.

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

Mr. Clinton was invited, but he declined because it was in the middle of his crisis.

Notre Dame does give an honorary degree to every President of the United States. I’m not sure when that tradition began or how. My guess is that it may have had something to do with bringing the White House’s attention to the Irish immigrants whose plight was very dire.

Fraternally,

JR 🙂

Simple. If I had a kid looking at college, I would cross Notre Dame off of the list of schools to which I would send my son or daughter if I was paying for their education in any way.

As for Fr. Jenkins, he represents a majority view of Catholic academia. To them, Obama can do no wrong. They are willing to overlook such matters because Mr. Obama is charming and erudite, and he reminds them of Mr. Spock, a sort of extrahuman, neo-gnostic uberhero in their eyes. He’s even got weird looking ears and his speech is devoid of emotion. Why he represents everything they themselves had dreamed of becoming when they were smoking dope and wrestling one another in the mud at Woodstock.

As far as I am concerned they can have him, and everything he represents. I do not support him, or any political leaders like him, and I sincerely hope he fails/ they fail. Rest assured, eventually he/they will. They always do.

The sad truth of this matter is this simply this: the only way abortion will end in this country is if for one, the US Supreme Court reverses all or in part Roe v. Wade (7-2 decision) or secondly, a constitutional amendment is passed abolishing abortion. For that to happen, a bill would have to pass Congress by 2/3 vote, signed off by the president, and then passed by 38 state legislatures within a specific period of time.

There currently are five Catholics on the Supreme Court currently. Since Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court has heard and ruled on no less than six or seven related abortion cases. Obviously the high court never reversed the 1973 decision.

It doesn’t matter what any president opinion or position is. The Supreme Court states that the Ninth and Fourteenth Amendments guarantees a women right to choose. It’s the law of the land.

No president or Congress since 1973 has even had the political will to attempt such an attempt at passing a constitutional amendment.

And by putting a pro-abortion president into office, Catholics have ensured that Roe v Wade will be safe for another generation, even though popular sentiment does not support its abortion on demand regime.

Unfortunately, we reap what we sow…and too many people are now reaping the results of electing a proabortion president. Things will be getting much worse before they will get better…thanks to the apathy of voters or voters who only jumped on the media’s spin and polls to go with a front runner. God have mercy on us.

What’s so ironic is that if you kill a woman who’s pregnant, you get charged for two murders.

That was one of the great things that happened in the Bush era, watch it be reversed as soon as possible.

Remind them that Obama is an ardent supporter of the most radical abortion law outside the Communists/formerly communist states (ours) and that he has recently taken steps to increase the availability of abortion both here and abroad, and that he is stacking his administration with pro-abortion activist including, of course the governor of Kansas. It is now clear that Notre Dame gives no more than lip-service to the pro-life cause, which may be true also of your liberal relatives.
