On Sept. 11 anniversary, appeals to remember as time passes
NEW YORK — Relatives of Sept. 11 victims marked the anniversary of the terror attacks Friday at ground zero with grief, gratitude and appeals to keep the toll front of mind after the passage of 14 years.
Over 1,000 people — fewer than thronged the observance in its early years — gathered for what has become a tradition of tolling bells, moments of silence and the reading of the names of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terror strikes at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
“We come every year. The crowds get smaller, but we want to be here. As long as I’m breathing, I’ll be here,” said Tom Acquaviva, 81, who lost his son, Paul Acquaviva.
Carrying photos emblazoned with the names of their loved ones, victims’ relatives praised first responders, thanked the armed forces and hoped for peace and security: “Pray to our God to keep America safe and give the politicians the knowledge to keep America safe,” said Maria Perez, who lost her son, Anthony Perez.

The guiltless Iraquis should start commemorating 9/11 for which they have been falsely accused. It would be good for them the other millions of innocent victims to start reading the names of their dead, wounded, torture, mutilated, and this may last until kingdom come. Not to mention all the contamination with depleted uranium of land which will last for 4,8 billion years. In the reading off of the names of the victim must read read hundreds of thousand American soldier who were sacrificed to be contaminated with Depleted Uranium for the ‘cause’ and the ‘cause’ is not an American cause. Hundreds of thousands of American veterans are being given minimal care as he government just waits until they die off.

People don’t remember Pearl Harbor the way they used to either. This seems to be human nature, and perhaps it is best this way. Lessons are learned, and hopefully we keep moving.

I was thinking of pearl Harbor yesterday as well…hardly anyone actually remembers the exact date when it happened. Both incidents had my casualties and were caused by war.

December 7, 1941. A Day that will live in infamy.

My mom’s dad had signed up for the ?something army related (maybe army national guard? or army reserves?)…just shortly before this. He and my grandma had only been married a very short time. She was pregnant with my mom’s oldest sister. Grandpa (who died of cancer 5 years before I was born 😦 ) went off to war and did not meet his oldest until she was 3 years old.

RE: 9/11
The sister of someone who goes to my parish died in the attacks. we should NEVER forget. This was a senseless act of violence and terrorism. We did NOTHING to deserve the attack.

9/11/01, 12/7/1941, July 1-3 1863…dates we should never forget
(July 1-3 1863 is something every school child should know by the time they are 13)

You are right, that was a most unjust reaction to the September 11 attacks. I pray to the Lord that the injured may be healed and the aggressors shown mercy.

Iraq was never accused of being involved with 9/11. The war was with al Qaeda, which was based in Afghanistan. The Iraq war was separate, and was based on Saddam Hussein flouting UN resolutions over 50 times in relation to weapons of mass destruction. Ultimately there was a fear, based on erroneous information, that he had acquired yellow cake which would have meant he was pursuing nuclear weapons. That proved untrue, but he did have both chemical and biological weapons and had unleashed chemical weapons on the Kurds in his own country resulting in genocide. He could have prevented war if he had simply allowed UN inspectors in- especially since the charge about the yellow cake was untrue. In the end, the war in Iraq destabilized the entire region and once we left Iraq it left a power vacuum which was ultimately filled by ISIS.

I wasn’t saying no one remembered…just a lot of people don’t seem to remember. I am so sorry about your grandpa. It’s so hard hearing about families being broken up because of war. I’m pregnant right now nd would be heartbroken if my husband couldn’t be hereduring our daughter’s birth 😦

I stand corrected on that point, but still count it as an unjust aggression, poorly executed (“won” the war but did not win the peace), with terrible long-term consequences for the US, Iraq, and all the world.

You’re preaching to the choir on that one. I didn’t support the war in Iraq then, and obviously with ISIS taking over we have seen that while Saddam Hussein was an evil man, things are much worse now. I simply wanted to set the record straight that 9/11 was blamed squarely (and fairly) on al Qaeda and that war was fought in Afghanistan.

I was thinking the exact same thing yesterday. On 9/11/01 my niece was pregnant with her first child and I had a little outfit I had bought for her shower sitting on the table. I kept looking at it that day and it would alternately make me sad or give me hope. Sad because I feared that baby would grow up in a different world than I had known. Hopeful because, well, life goes on.

If you talk about 9/11 around that soon to be 14 year old or any of his 3 younger brothers, they are respectful but you might as well be talking about Pearl Harbor. It is ancient history to them-something the old people talk about. That’s not a bad thing.

It’s weird but that little baby outfit is one of my most vivid memories from that day.

So true. We should never forget either occurance. We cannot afford to be complacent. My Parish lost over a dozen Parishioners in 9/11. We will always keep our annual Memorial Mass. Our Church has a beautiful Memorial Garden with a statue of Jesus embracing the twin towers & the names of the Parishioners lost at the base.

The Kurds thanked us and Saddam was accused of genocide, now genocide is not okay with me but different strokes for different folks.

Thanks. In this world, some people like to blame everything on America, someone will talk about how terrible a Gitmo prisoner is treated and nothing of 3000 persons from countries around the world murdered. It is amazing.

And excuse me, the US was not in Syria. Syria and Iran helped foment war in Iraq, the Syrian regime is the biggest killer in Syria. Seems the Russians who back up Syria and Iran have plenty of responsibility.

WMDs in Iraq, that is open to debate as well. There are thousands of pages of documentation on this.

We can’t let the Mainstream Media or Russian propoganda decide what happened there nor Democrats.

It is terrible what happened on 9-11, I feel for all those who lost close friends and family, but from what Ive seen and read, Im still a bit skeptical on who is actually responsible. There are just way too many ‘interesting’ things that occurred the day before, the day of, and right after, that make me wonder. If it was just one or two, I could see that, but with this, there are SO many, it just cannot be coincidence.

Maybe it’s because we’re in the South, but everyone here was talking about 9-11 and many commemoratives were happening. Indeed, we’re having a prayer for all affected at all the Formation classes tomorrow.
It was very much in the forefront yesterday.
Never Forget.

Yes.

At this moment I am watching a program (The 9/11 Tapes: Chaos in the Sky) that I DVR’d the other day. It brings it all back like it was yesterday. God bless all the victims, their families & friends.

The chemical weapons in Iraq were provided by the United States to Saddam Hussein. He was advised to used them on the Kurds and this way he will not destroy property. When he did, the USA looked the other way. This was only to be able to use it against him when the proper time would come and lo and behold; and then it was properly used against him to justify a genocide of the Iraqui people. But, I guess it’s not genocide to some people if they are not Americans or Israelis. **Right, different strokes for different folks. ** It’s not genocide if it is done by the USA/Israel only if the ‘enemy/terrorists’ do it. Right. Got it.

Nealy 500,000 thousand Iraquis had already died due to the UN/USA sanctions. Mr. Bin Laden spoke up against the atrocity/genocide being committed against the Iraqui people by the USA - that made him a terrorist and a most wanted person by the FBI. Then, after the sanctions designed to kill off as many as possible by preventing chlorine to be imported Iraq was carpet bombed and the bombing continues under some other guise and excuse.Oh, by wait, what ever happened to the narrative of spreading democracy?
The US/ UN sanctions on Iraq of the 1990s, which interdicted chlorine for much of that decade and so made water purification impossible, are estimated to have killed another 500,000 Iraqis, mainly children. (Infants and toddlers die easily from diarrhea caused by gastroenteritis, which causes fatal dehydration).

9/11 & Iraq Revisited: Remembering How We Were Lied Into War
antiwar.com/blog/2014/09/19/911-iraq-revisited-remembering-how-we-were-lied-into-war/

Last summer Israel was bombing Gaza and the USA just kept sending it more arms - to bomb an already open air concentration camp.

All this to make way for the establishment of the future empire of Greater Israel at the cost of the USA. Time to clean up Washington - and I mean the permanent staff.

Whatever else one may think about former Mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani, he was a tower of leadership and strength on the day of the 9/11 attack. Certainly no New Yorker will or should ever forget that terrible day and those who perished, including the courageous firefighters, police officers, and EMT first responders.
👍 There were many heroes that day. Rudy Giuliani was a good leader. Some heroes did not survive 9/11 and others lived to tell the story of that terrible day.
