On the role of fathers

Custody is where the child lives and the decision making, often broken into phrases like “physical custody” and “legal custody”.

As a lawyer, I’ve seen any number of fathers with custody.
But have you seen a Dad with sole custody where the mom had zero visitation?

The reason I ask is because I so frequently hear people toss around the term “Single Mom” or “Single Dad” when, really, there’s another parent helping upwards of half the time with raising a child and helping with the logistics of back-to-school shopping, soccer / basketball /swimming / lacrosse / tennis, etc

Zero visitation is very, very, rare.

Even extreme situations usually lead to supervised visitation, not none at all. (And I did see the wrong party put under supervision . . .)

Most of the time, one parent has most of the control, time, and responsibility.

It’s a happy, but all too rare, circumstance when the other parent (most often, but not always, the father) actually puts in large amounts of time.

Locally, the ideal is pretty much 50/50 on everything, but too few parents pull this off successfully.

All too many noncustodial parents see it simply as a financial arrangement, that the other has all the responsibility, and that they’re “paying the ex,” rather than supporting their child 😡😭

And how many teenagers do you know that don’t think their parents are too controlling?
