There are many rock/metal threads in the Popular Media forum if you care to take a look. There are even some AC/DC threads, too.
I think you’ll find a variety of opinions here on CAF ranging from “It’s of the deviiilll!!!” to “Anything goes”.
I think that, in this area, there is no substitute for personal discernment. We always want to be mindful of how what we take in effects our relationship with others, with ourself, and with God. I think the most oft overlooked aspect (at least, speaking for myself) is that of a possible cumulative corrosive effect. I’ve been listening to hard rock/heavy metal for the past 25 years. I’m not a violent person. I don’t cuss or smoke or do drugs or many of the things associated with that scene. But I do periodically revisit the question: how does this impact my relationship with God?
I haven’t really looked at the lyrics, but I’m pretty sure that AC/DC song is
not about reveling in the fact that one is hell-bound. Metal lyrics tend to use provocative images to make a point. Perhaps others more familiar with that song will comment.
I would really take it to prayer, though. I know some people who felt called to purge most of their music collection upon their conversion. They had too many negative associations bound up with the music. I have never felt called to do that thus far (though I’m far from a perfect listener when it comes to following God’s will for my life). I don’t have any negative associations with the music as I never really fell in with the “wrong crowd”.
That said, there are still certain bands and certain songs that I just won’t listen to. I can tolerate a certain amount of criticism of Christianity and/or organized religion. Often times, such lyrics are born out of perceived hypocrisy (which is not completely unfounded) or commentary on actual scandals. I can understand that. But blatant blasphemy really has no place in my music collection.
