Both refer to substance yet the former has a more philosophical vibe imo but can’t really substitute into phrases like “economic materialism” and “cultural materialism” b/c saying that all economics and culture always has a single underlying substance to it (like money or expression) would be too self-limiting.
I think a lot at the definitions of both would help for beginners to understand.Synonymity can’t always apply for one thing
