Thanks for your reply.🙂 I agree that knowledge of Jesus is not the same thing as surrender to God’s will.

Not to get too deep here but is it possible to surrender totally to God’s will?
The martyrs of the faith…especially those during the Roman persecution, who gave their lives for God…those who went on missionary journeys to spread the faith and faced persecution and execution…the great saints of the CC who gave their lives in service of the Lord…like St. Francis of Assissi, who prayed that the wounds of Christ be manifest on his body…and the other Stigmatics who experienced the wounds of Christs on their bodies…the victim souls who volunteered to offer their sufferings for the redemption of souls…the Virgin Mary…and many more.

I suggest you read on the lives of these saints…starting with St. Francis, St. Claire, Catherine of Sienna…St Francis Xavier…and so on.

Okay. So God gives you grace. You are free to accept it or to turn from it. While you don’t have infinite freedom, you do have SOME freedom.
If God gives one grace to believe it is because God is calling, or drawing them to Christ (Jn 6:44, 65).

And He calls only those He’s predestined, and predestines only those He foreknew, and after He calls them, He also justifies them, and after He justifies them, He also glorifies them (Rom 8:29ff). Whew…that blows me away.

If one is justified by God, then one is also glorified by Him. I don’t get how anyone can believe that salvation can be lost. 🤷

The command is that God’s will be done perfectly as God is perfect (Mt 5:48). How many of those you mention above were perfect as God is perfect, without spot, or blemish, or sin, or stain?

Any of them?

That’s not what Jesus says in John 6. He doesn’t say God gives the same grace to everyone to come to me, does He?

No, He doesn’t. Jesus says, “NO ONE CAN COME…unless it HAS BEEN GRANTED TO HIM by My Father” (Jn 6:44, 65; cf Rom 8:29ff; 1 Cor 1:30; Eph 1:3ff, and so on, and on, and on).

What you say is different from what Jesus says.
No, because God calls all men to himself. Remember, Jesus also says that when he is lifted up, he will call all men to himself. (John 12:32).

So it’s God’s secret will that people break his permissive will? The permissive will allows people to oppose His will and it’s also His secret will that they oppose His will? So His will is not really His will? He wills to contradict His will? But God’s not the author of evil? And He’s probably not irrational at the same time? Why does He need a permissive will if His secret will wants the same thing? What’s He permitting if He’s already in agreement that all rape torture, & genocide should be done? If He ordained it from the beginning of time? Because man certainly didn’t do it-he has no will-not one that’s free anyway.
I don’t know, but I do know that there is no conflict in God.

How about you? Do you know there is no conflict in God?

No, because God calls all men to himself. Remember, Jesus also says that when he is lifted up, he will call all men to himself. (John 12:32).
Jesus calls all men to Himself, but no one can come to Him unless it is granted by the Father (Jn 6:44). 😉

So you say God actively predestine for some others to unable to receive the Good News, and in turn predestine for them to go to hell?

Nowhere in Scripture says Salvation can be lost. Maybe it is because salvation is a process to be fulfilled to the end, to be persevered, not something instantaneous.Accepting Christ is the first step to reconciliation, but what about sins? Forgiveness? Are you saying that once someone accept Christ, he will have a jail free opportunity to commit sins? It is not just faith, but faith TIL THE END that can save souls

What does that have to do with conversion?
It has to do with salvation, Sig. Salvation.
“Appears” being the operative word. You Catholics aren’t very sure of anything, are you? Can’t be presumptuous, eh?
It’s part of the lexicon of dialogue. Don’t take it too literally, friend. 🙂
Conjuring up the dead? That’s a sin, ain’t it?
Hmmm. Now I was speaking metaphorically.

I really, really hope that when we’re in dialogue I don’t have to point out
-when I’m being rhetorical
-when I’m being metaphorical
and when I’m being allegorical

(I love when I’m a poet and also being quite trenchant and insightful!) 😃

because, firstly, it doesn’t enable the dialogue, and secondly, I am certain that you get when it’s literal, rhetorical, metaphorical, allegorical, your claims to being obtuse about it notwithstanding.

This is what it really says:
28* We know that all things work for good for those who love God,* who are called according to his purpose.- 29* For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified.

You have added the word “only”. We acknowledge that some men are predestined for heaven. But you are making it say more by your inappropriate addition. And the quote says nothing about being saved forever, no matter what you do. That is a faulty extrapolation on your part.
.

Jesus calls all men to Himself, but no one can come to Him unless it is granted by the Father (Jn 6:44). 😉
and thus the Father, being as tyrannical as he is, will NOT allow certain people to accept the Gospel and the salvation which His Son WILLS for all to accept. Two things are certain: a disunion between the members of the Trinity, and the vision of an angry evil god

I don’t know, but I do know that there is no conflict in God.

How about you? Do you know there is no conflict in God?
Yes, that’s why there’s no conflict in the Catholic understanding of free will/predestination. Maybe I should say* less* conflict. Anyway, the question is never quite resolved. IMO, Calvin went too far in trying to resolve it.

See Rom 11:7-10. 🙂

Thank you for your interesting thoughts on why salvation can’t be lost.

See Rom 5:20-6:2. 🙂

That’s exactly what Jesus says (Mt 10:22), He also says that the Holy Spirit is given as a guarantee of final salvation (Eph 1:13-14, cf 2 Cor 1:22), and He also says that He who causes men to born again, He also protects those men by His power through faith for salvation (1 Pet 1:3-5).

Do you believe that?

Yes, that’s why there’s no conflict in the Catholic understanding of free will/predestination. Maybe I should say* less* conflict. Anyway, the question is never quite resolved. IMO, Calvin went too far in trying to resolve it.
Neither is there any conflict in Calvin’s understanding of free will/predestination.

None whatsoever. 🙂

Do you have anything rational to say, or is your fallacious emotional appeal, that’s meant only to manipulate, all that you can muster?

Hi Paul C,

You are not saying anything different from Jesus.

There are many stories about people either accepting God’s grace or rejecting it … and of those who rejected it - some continued down that path while others repented and returned to God.

One of the things I have experienced when Protesants quote from John 6 is that the Eucharistic Discourse is always missing. Note how the poster presents his ‘proof text’ - and totally missed the free will in opeation by the Jews who walked out on Christ because they did not beieve what he said. Here is the text preceeding the reference and going beyone the reference.

** Jn 6:35-69 **

35* Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.q 36But I told you that although you have seen [me], you do not believe.r 37Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me, 38because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.s 39And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it [on] the last day.t 40For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him [on] the last day.”u

41The Jews murmured about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven,” 42and they said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”v 43Jesus answered and said to them, “Stop murmuring* among yourselves.w 44No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. 45It is written in the prophets:

‘They shall all be taught by God.’

Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me.x 46Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.y **47Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died;z 50this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”a *52The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us [his] flesh to eat?” 53Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. 54Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. 55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. 57Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.b 58This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.” 59These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

The Words of Eternal Life.* 60Then many of his disciples who were listening said, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” 61Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, “Does this shock you? 62What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?* 63It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh* is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64But there are some of you who do not believe.”** Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him**.c 65And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father.”

66As a result of this, many [of] his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. 67Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” 68Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”

The parts that are enlarged show where just ‘believing’ is NOT enough - Christ commands that we act - and in this case, we are commanded to eat His Flesh (v 54-56). Apparently most walked out on Christ at this point - they refused to believe what Chirst had just told them - and these were disciples. Later on we find that the Apostle Judas took this same information from Christ and let the Devil come into his heart.

God bless
I would say that God gives grace to everyone and some decline it and are condemned by that action.

Except that if you accept his, then Gods the author of evil.
Actually, what I accept, or decline to accept has no bearing on whether God is the author of evil or not.

Scripture says He’s not. Case closed. 😉

Do you have anything rational to say, or is your fallacious emotional appeal, that’s meant only to manipulate, all that you can muster?
No my good sir in fact my statement came directly from your conclusion. Since God directly chooses who to save, He must also harden others (according to some of the passages you showed me) and therefore predestined for them to hell. Then what word is fitting to describe such being beside tyrannical? Also since you said the Son wills for all men to come to Him, and yet according to you the Father only predestines SOME to come, that does present a disunion between the members of the Trinity

Actually, what I accept, or decline to accept has no bearing on whether God is the author of evil or not.

Yes, scripture says He’s not, which means man’s will must be free in choosing his final destiny.
