“Pornhub’s traffic plummets on GoT’s premier night. Let’s see. Why do you think that is? Is it luring people away from addiction or just fulfilling it? I mean it’s an addiction. Suddenly the people that pay for porn have found a laudable sub? Come on, people! I somehow don’t see all the porn addicts dropping everything and going to the Vatican art collection on-line to get away from their porn addiction. The GoT people know that porn is addictive. What better way to keep the ratings up?”

I wonder if they’ll ever create an edited version of GoT without all the sex and nudity for play on commercial channels, like they do with R-rated movies shown on network channels. I might watch it then, but as it is now, I refuse to watch it. Has there ever been an episode of GoT without nudity? Maybe there would be nothing left after the editing . Anyway, I don’t have HBO at my house, although my mom does, and I’m at her house a lot. But who wants to watch sex scenes with their mom?? Not me!

It seems to be a very popular show. I’ve never seen it, partly because it seems sleazy and partly because I don’t have HBO.

I’ve read the books. The show is interesting, but I don’t watch it because of the brutality mainly.

I’m admittedly torn. The story is compelling in alot of ways. But as a huge LoTR fan Martin and (more often) his fans kind of bash Tolkien, which amazes me. He says he doesn’t like tropes and the way Gandalf came back. Then he brings back 2 maybe 3 characters. The faith of the seven is a rather thin straw man. The brutality is excessive. You can hint at it (this was done much more in the books) without showing it.

At this point I listen to podcasts and quick reviews to get where the show is going without actually watching the bad parts.

Actually in recent seasons there’s been plenty of episodes without nudity. Last night’s was the first nudity I can recall in quite a while. There was none in the season premier. And nudity in and of itself isn’t evil. In many cases the nudity is part of the overall impact of the story, such as Dany’s nudity last season which ended up being part of her overall “unburned” mystique which acquired for her ALL of the Dothraki.

Pornhub’s traffic plummets during the Superbowl too; is Bill Belichick just that sexy, or is the Superbowl another hobby of Pornhub’s primary audience?

This woman is either dishonest and playing to the lowest common denominator, or she’s very confused about correlation vs. causation and is the lowest common denominator.

Game of Thrones has definitely crossed lines when it comes to depicting unnecessary nudity. No question about that. But the OP goes way beyond a fair criticism… I am 99% positive that there was no nudity nor any sex in the season 7 premier… so that kinda blows that argument. The last couple seasons, as far as I remember, have had far less nudity / sex in general. I simply fast forward the scenes that go too far.
The season 7 premier showed Jon Snow acting in a very godly manner…as an outstanding leader.

I’ve come to the conclusion that in this day and age, no show will ever be liked by the masses and popular because of its virtue.

But by the same token most shows aren’t loved for lack of virtue either. Game of Thrones isn’t popular because it occasionally has nudity. It’s popular because it’s damn good story telling with compelling characters, motion picture level cinematography and some stellar acting.

Exactly. No one is going to watch It solely for the odd scene of nudity. Why go to that effort when actual porn is readily available for free.

An edited version of The Sopranos was in the works but that fell through.

The date on the calendar does not change things. Only people change things. We should always promote virtue. Game of Thrones is porn.

The “popularity” of GoT is based on what then? Yes, I’ve watched some episodes. And as a book editor, I’ve seen a ton of manuscripts, so take away the bare this and that and the frolic scenes, plus the related, and the story is pretty predictable.

The fact he hasn’t released a new novel in the series yet, and has no set date for the next one, may lend credence to that fact. I saw a joke the other day that he’s waiting for HBO to finish to just novelize what Weiss and Benihoff come up with.

How do you square that with the fact that multiple episodes don’t have any nudity or sex scenes at all?

The political intrigue, the action / epic battle scenes… I don’t know why I would watch 60 hours of television for the odd sex scene which isn’t even present in every episode.

Best lost of the thread.

Which is purely a subjective perspective. If you don’t like it, fine. But don’t presume to judge the motives of book readers or show watchers.

I myself am not a fan of the show. Since season four it’s been going downhill as the artistic limitation of the writers has become apparent. The books, however, are the best fantasy series I’ve read, easily surpassing Lord of the Rings. And predictable? Please. Keywords sans spoilers: lemon tree, Septa Lemore, Darkstar, tourmaline. If you think the series is predictable you either haven’t read it or aren’t familiar with Martin’s other work, the plot twists of which are so absurdly complex that prediction is nearly impossible.

All of the other comments are subjective as well, but I’m familiar with storytelling and minus the sex scenes and partial or mostly nudity, I’d rate this show as mediocre. Again, if they just cut out all the bad stuff. I’m not judging anyone.

And I’ve read absurdly complex done very well. The company I work for would not still be around if the writers could not deliver. And Lord of the Rings? I know people who have read the series 12 or more times, dissecting it in minute detail and so on. Nine Princes in Amber - the list goes on.

I’ve helped and watched worlds being built from the ground up. That’s the difference. I’ve worked with and now work with genius level creatives - concept people. I’m handed a piece of artwork and asked to give that flying creature a name in 5 minutes or less. I am not a passive reader/observer, I understand the fundamentals as a full-time editor, and writer/creature-thing namer on a part-time level. This is what I do for a living.
