I have a question.

What is your understanding of what Christ does as the “One Mediator between God and Man”?
How does He fulfill that role?

Hi Pup,

Christ, through his sacrifice on the cross merited for us all the graces that come from God.

Verbum

I am finding it interesting that, especially non-Catholic haven’t grabbed at the chance to use this to explain away many of the things they don’t like or aren’t sure about in the Catholic Church. Or is it that they can’t explain Christ’s roll as “Mediator”.

Come on guys, step up to the plate. I’m curious. :whackadoo:

No, anti-Catholics and many non-Catholics can’t explain the role as one Mediator properly. Why? Because they reject Traditional Christianity. They explain what it means to them, and not what Traditional Christianity has taught from the beginning to this day.

I think you are right. I have gotten the feeling that they have forgotten that mediation is a 2 way street and how it works.

Oh well, I just thought I would ask the question.

I look at is a bridge between two cliffs. Before Christ there was a great chasm between man and God. We stood on two different sides of the cliff, but when Christ sacrificed himself for us, he became that bridge, that mediator. When we pray for one another, or ask the saints to pray for us, its like we’re holding hands with each other over that bridge of Christ. It’s Christ alone that can be that bridge between man and God, but now that the bridge is built we can share in it.

Moreover, I believe Christ became the only mediator of Man to God because He himself became Man. In Christ, human soul and divinity became one. No other has an access to the Father but through the Son. In this way, Christ became the only Mediator.

Here’s the catch, what happens to the Virgin Mary? How come she became a co-Mediator? This is exactly because it was Mary’s “YES” that made Jesus possible to become the Mediator. The “co-” means “cooperator” which means made possible with the Mediator – still through Jesus’ glory not by her own.

As per praying to other souls, this is simply asking them to pray for us to the same God. Still Jesus being Mediator is not “jeopardized” as many non- and anti-Catholics (mis)interpret.

I think many look to deep into this question. Jesus says “I am the Way, The Truth, and the Life and no comes to the Father unless its through me” Now I havent found anywhere in scripture that says there is only one way to Jesus or through Jesus. This is were I think people confuse the two. They think because we pray to the blessed Mother we are going through Her to get to the Father, which is not the case. She points us to Her Son and He brings it to the Father. The same with all the heavenly instruments that Jesus has ordained to work for the Kingdom. They all have been ordained to bring us to the Bridge (the cross) and its only through that cross can one speak to the Father. Without the Lamb there is no communication or relationship.

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

That is exclusive. Salvation is only found in Jesus.

Without him as mediator there is no way for salvation. When you standing before God and
he ask what have with my son…he steps him in and saids “he’s good… he is one of mine” Then God saids come on in my good and faithful servent and recieve your reward.

God bless

OK, some very good replies but most only address from man to God. Here is a follow up question.

Who is the mediator from God to man? Couldn’t Jesus use a 3rd party if he wanted to? Where is the proof he doesn’t.

Jesus is the mediator from God to man. I’m confused as to what you’re looking for in an answer.

I guess where I was hoping this would go is where does it say that Christ can’t or doesn’t use others to mediate between Him and us as individuals? Why is it so hard for some to believe that Christ works through His Priests, or the Saints in heaven. I was hoping to hear from those who find it no problem to put limitations on what Christ can and will do and how He does it.

Just wondering how some of those people explain themself.

Its Christ in those, Its the Holy Spirit in those vessals. And I dont have a problem with others bringing us to Christ like I said. There is no place in scripture that says there is one way to Christ…No were!!!

But it does say Christ is the only way…

2574 Once the promise begins to be fulfilled (Passover, the Exodus, the gift of the Law, and the ratification of the covenant), the prayer of Moses becomes the most striking example of intercessory prayer, which will be fulfilled in “the one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

From Timothy:
1 Tim 2:1-2 - because Jesus Christ is the one mediator between God and man (1 Tim. 2:5), many Protestants deny the Catholic belief that the saints on earth and in heaven can mediate on our behalf. But before Paul’s teaching about Jesus as the “one mediator,” Paul urges supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people. Paul is thus appealing for mediation from others besides Christ, the one mediator. Why?

1 Tim 2:3 - because this subordinate mediation is good and acceptable to God our Savior. Because God is our Father and we are His children, God invites us to participate in Christ’s role as mediator.

1 Tim. 2:5 - therefore, although Jesus Christ is the sole mediator between God and man, there are many intercessors (subordinate mediators).

Allow me please to play the role of “d.a.” on this particular comment as written **

While your statement is certainly true, it is also true that Catholics do pray “to and THROUGH” Mary and the Saints, as they are in a position to aid our cause and see God “face to face.”

I would however disagree “that they are all the same.”

Mary is after all the Very Mother of God, one should not doubt her highly favored position
[Lk. 1:26] and the preference that God rightly gives to Her.

The Cross of Christ*** and ***OUR CROSS are both necessary for ones Salvation.

Luke 9: 23 "And he said to all, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake, he will save it"

It’s not so much what we say, as what we do and DON"T DO! That speaks volumes to God.

God has given us His Seven Sacraments and the men to validate them and make them present to us; BUT it is our responsibility, our duty to use them often and worthily. We, you and me, decide on eternal heaven or eternal hell; Christ only affirms our decission.

Love and prayers,

Jesus said He would send a comforter, the Holy Spirit. Mary nor any saint is not the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the bridge for us to the Son.
Peace, Golfjack
