One thing you were made to eat as a child you won't look at now

my parents never forced me to eat anything, but, if I willingly put it on my plate, I had to finish it.

We were a clean plate family. I don’t do that to my kids, but give them dessert if they do clean their plate.

Good diplomatic way of handling it. I’ll have to remember that one if I ever have kids. 👍

Beets. Cooked spinach. Canned green beans. Those mixed-vegetables-in-a-can.

When I grew up, if you didn’t clean your plate at dinner, you had it for breakfast the next morning. Ever had re-heated canned beets for breakfast? Bleah!

Canned peas.

Tuna casserole (which also contained canned peas).

I can feel my stomach starting to turn just thinking about those.

Canned peas. We had “no thank you” helpings, which were very small (demitasse spoon) servings.

My parents never forced us to eat anything. (I always thought I was so lucky compared to my friends.)

When I got to be a teenager I began to eat most of the things I didn’t like when I was younger. But to this day I won’t eat peas if they are by themselves. They need to be mixed with other vegetables. (Pea pods are different. I’ll eat them.🤷) And I still don’t particularly like mushrooms. (I think it’s a texture thing) I’ll remove them from what I’m eating if at all possible.

Lima Beeeeeeeans. Ughughugh. And I love other bean, lentils, chickpeas - you could say I’m a fan of legumes in general.

But limas…oh no, not those. The stench alone is enough to put me out of the house for quite a while, which my father probably saw as an extra bonus feature, even though the rest of the family wasn’t big on them either.

But I found my revenge in crisp, delicious pickles. In this case, my mother would not permit me to open or consume them indoors, but hey, once again, I saw that as a side bennie, and certainly not an inconvenience compared to going without my beloved pickles!

Okay, we were dysfunctional, but at least that part was somewhat humorous to me, anyway.

Plain cooked spinach (will still eat it as raw salad or mixed into other dishes)
Hot cooked beets (will still eat them cold on salads)
Most canned vegetables (sometimes use canned corn to mix into dishes)
Canned mushroom slices (always use fresh now)
Pecans, walnuts, pistachios (have a mild allergy, parents didn’t believe it and thought I was being fussy as a child)
Pork chops (fresh pork always gives me upset stomach and gut pain)

Canned peas :nope: I can tolerate frozen peas now and peapods, but canned peas are a big NOPE!

The only thing I remember being told that I absolutely HAD to eat was liver. Thirty years ago, when I was about 10, I was diagnosed as anemic. The iron supplement I was given was too harsh, making me nauseated and fatigued, so the doctor told my mother to feed me liver THREE TIMES A WEEK!!! Yes, it was for “medicinal” purposes and after about two weeks of that, I’d had it. I don’t care how much ketchup and grilled onion you put on that stuff, it’s still “livery”.

Fortunately, a nurse told my mom that pinto beans and spinach are also good sources of iron… and to this day, that’s my favorite comfort food!

Liver… not unless I’m starving. Seriously.

My mother was in charge of the table and she never forced me she just asked that I tried it but would not force me. My father would try to force me however he was told NO nicely by my mother. I was so bad at thanksgiving I would only eat hard salami sandwich because everything was gross. Now I eat everything and anything more than my father in fact. He wont touch half the vegatables I eat and wont even consider offal, sweetbreads or sushi. Sadlym, though I find i really dont care for hard salami anymore.😛

Macaroni and cheese. The home made kind with boiling milk.:crying:

Canned peas should be illegal.
