I’m looking for a free, or at least inexpensive, online New American Bible that will have automatic referrals to the commentary of the passage I happen to be reading. Suggestion please.

Is this for a class? If so, you are stuck. Otherwise, I strongly suggest that you do NOT consult the introductions and footnotes of the New American Bible or the newer NAB/RE. Why?

They strongly suggest - even assume - that Luke made up parts of his Gospel, that Mary never uttered the Magnificat, that the author of the “Gospel according to Matthew” is not and cannot be known, that whoever he was, he may have simply consulted a “master text” (Q source) and copied it, and many other nebulous, obscure, modernist and otherwise corrosive-to-faith opinions.

Good, solid, time-tested commentaries are here:

And here:

I’m not sure exactly what you’re trying to achieve. If you want to have electronic versions of the Bible that track with commentaries, you’d need software like Verbum.

that the author of the Gospel according to Matthew is not and cannot be known,
Your meaning seems to be ambiguous here. Would you care to clarify? There are two alternative ways of reading your statement, as I see it.

(1) The author of the first Gospel is known and it is therefore incorrect to state that his identity is not and cannot be known.
(2) It is true that we do not have certain knowledge of the author’s identity, but it is inappropriate to draw attention to that fact in a Catholic Bible.

Or, possibly, none of the above?

Fixed.

The bottom line is that some of the notes in the NAB and /RE are fine. But some are absolutely horrible. If you want solid, 100% Catholic book introductions and footnotes, please refer to the 1941 Confraternity New Testament.

IMO, the best American-English New Testament ever printed.

I personally don’t know of ANY that do ALL that you ask:

The Douay Catholic Bible Offers explanations of many difficult passages

I have always felt that comments about a particular verse or parable is very helpful in letting me know what the prodominate thought is since I have on occassion had very different opinions from different sources. And, sometimes I have to use my own judgement on what is being said. Which is not always correct. Commentary gives me some arguements to use when talking to protestants.

I am not sure what you mean about the referrals, but I use this site for an online Scripture source:

They do provide the footnotes…

Protestants have their own commentaries… 🙂

Thanks for a prudent and thoughtful reply.
