I’m curious, what is your opinions on online dating, such as Catholicmatch.com and so on?
I’m been considering making an account for sometime, but I can’t seem to do it. I feel like I’m giving up on God’s ability to finding a good Catholic lady the “normal” way. Granted, I’m also young (22) and feel like I should wait until later down the road?

Or maybe God wants me to be single right now? I’m not sure. I’m in no hurry to get married or to find anyone for that matter. I just want to be proactive in finding God’s will. I’m just worried I’m going to miss something.

Thank you for reading my question/ rant:rolleyes:

Do a search on here using the Search feature. There are **numerous **threads on the topic of online dating in general, and thread on specific sites as well-- catholicmatch, ave maria, etc.

In general, this is a personal matter that you need to discern for yourself. There is no right or wrong way to find a spouse. I think that you decide what is “normal”, not other people. I think you decide what you are willing to do for a relationship, not other people. I think you decide when you are ready to find a spouse, not other people.

On here, you will find numerous accounts of success on these sites, and numerous accounts of people who were not satisfied with them.

So, the bottom line is YMMV, Your Mileage May Vary.

I’ve never used online dating, so take my answer with a grain of salt. But i did use a service that preceded it. I had a profession that demanded a lot of study - and i found myself dedicating a lot of resources to my career throughout my 20s and then 30s.

I had gone on numerous blind dates throughout the years - and things just weren’t working out with the friends and acquaintances that i had. I was working many hours a week, and my free time was precious to me. So i finally joined an organization called “Great Expectations”. It worked probably similar to online dating. Everyone had a profile. One would go in and go through binders of pictures and profiles and select a couple prospects. And then if that person accepted your interest, phone numbers were exchanged.

And i used the service for a year or so. In the beginning, i went on a lot of dates. After a while though, it just seemed like i was going through the motions. Dates seemed more like interviews. It just seemed like people were reduced to their statistics (the profile). And when we would go on dates, it seemed like i knew quite a bit more about someone than i would naturally know at this point in a more random meeting. I might be able to eliminate people that i would probably never consider for the long haul (I knew for example, that i could never live with a smoker).

However, while i already knew so much about someone, i realized that i knew nothing at all. Because what mattered to me (personality), did not translate well to a pile of statistics. I did get to meet people that i would never have met. I didn’t have the awkward third party that exists with blind dates.

But I ultimately gave up on it - not because it was wrong - but i just wasn’t working for me. That service required you to take new profile pictures every year. While i didn’t have to pay any more for the service itself, i was required to pay an extra $100 or so to have new pictures taken through their photographers. So after a year, i decided not to keep doing that.

However, i did have some nice dates. A few went into multiple dates. There is no reason i wouldn’t have ultimately found a “right” person.

I don’t believe necessarily that God makes it so we find the right person without us doing all that is possible to make ourselves ready to meet them. I think the more exposure we have to as many people as possible, the more likely we will be to understand that this is the “right” person.

For example, if i were in my basement playing video games, waiting for the right woman to knock on the door, i might have a long wait.

As with any tool, they are only as useful as your knowledge and skill allows.

If you know what it is that you’re looking for, and are observant and patient, these sites can be great at helping you meet the kinds of people you’re hoping to meet. On the other hand, if you’re not really sure what you’re looking for, or don’t know how to read between the lines, you may end up meeting loads of completely incompatible people and burning out in frustration.

I think using the internet as a way to meet like minded people is a good thing. Some people use the single’s websites to arrange completely blind first dates because they don’t want to get emotionally attached to someone they’ve never met. I, however, am far more comfortable getting to know someone online for awhile before I feel safe meeting them in person.

Going online doesn’t mean closing yourself off to dating people you meet through out means. Its just deciding to put yourself out to be met in another way. Its like looking at your life and seeing what you do day by day and saying “You know what? I’m just not meeting very high quality people this way. What could I add or change to my life to help me meet better people?”

When I attended Franciscan University of Steubenville, I did not see the need to be on a Catholic dating site. However after graduation, I lived in a community where there just was not a very vibrant young adult Catholic community. Most of the people I socialized with were elderly and treated me like I was a celebrity. “You’re young and go to daily Mass. You’re my hero. How I wish my son, my granddaughter…”

Even the people my parents’ age at my parish told me I’d never marry if I insisted upon marrying an devout Catholic. After all, any devout Catholic male must be meant for the priesthood. No, you woman must either join a convent or settle for a non-Catholic or some man who doesn’t take his faith seriously. Even the woman who did FOCUS test (yes just a woman. I have no idea where her husband was) started asking my husband if he maybe was denying his true vocation by seeking to marry me.

There is nothing to be ashamed of by meeting people online. You will have your own strategy about how to deal with such an impersonal way of meeting people. Some, like I said, just go on blind dates right away. Others, like myself, develop online friendships for awhile and in time decide whether or not they want to take the step in meeting.

Granted, I’m also a very introverted person. To be honest I’ve found socializing online first helps to build a level of trust that allows me to be a bit easier going while on first dates. And to be honest, had meeting my husband been a completely blind date, I would have never gone on a second date with him. Our first date really did not go that well. It was all the conversations and what not that we had before that allowed us to both give each other another shot.

I tried online dating and I can personally say that it works.

I met my Fiance on Match.com. I searched for men that lived close by and to be honest, it wasn’t any different then going out on a date with someone your friend may have set you up with. We e-mailed each other a couple of times and decided to go out on a date. Nearly four years later we are getting married in a couple of months.

I’m sure that Christian dating websites are no different.

I tried online dating because I was tired of meeting men that weren’t appealing to me through my friends. Online dating gives you a bigger pool of people to choose from. Good luck!

There isn’t a problem doing online dating and it is something you have to figure out on your own if it is right for you. It does help you find right from the get go if a person has at least some of the qualities you are looking for. I never did it myself, but I have many friends who have and some have found spouses this way.

Thank you everyone for the (name removed by moderator)ut! It definitely makes me feel more comfortable with the idea.

Twoangels I think you are right on. You basically described the story of my life.

I really appreciate everyone taking the time to post! It really did/does help.🙂

At your age you will have plenty of opportunities for dating. You think you should wait? I think so too. Not because I’m not recommending them – but because at your age the possibilities for your dating are endless. I think they work best for those in their 30s and 40s who may have spent too much time on their careers. They seem to be problematic for those who are older (JMO here).

I think at your age, you will do better by joining something that interests you where you can socialize people of your own age and meet someone that way, if that’s God’s will. If you have finished college – take a class, join a hiking or bycycling group, volunteer, get active in the Church food bank, etc.

However, if you want to give it a try, there’s nothing wrong with it. Be aware that many times you write to someone and they don’t have a full membership. That seems to be a big criticism of these sites – too many members who don’t pay for the full features so there’s no way of corresponding which limits your pool.

Good luck, God Bless.

I’d like to add my sweet story. I met my husband on on a catholic website. I was (am) shy. He was (is) shy. We felt connected online. Met. Got married two years later. Had a baby a two years after. And another baby another year later. And here we are, about to have our six-year wedding anniversary this spring! But mind you, I shall say that I did meet a lot of not-so-nice guys.

Always practice caution, meet in public places, do not give out personal information until you have had plenty of contact online. Let your family know of your whereabouts also. At least, that’s how I went about it. Now, I met guys on a few online sites but I found meeting on a catholic site was best. I knew that for me, it was important that my husband be Roman Catholic. We used catholicmath.com My brother also found his wife on catholicmatch. She is of a different rite, but also Catholic.

Hope my story lets you know that it IS possible to find love in places least expected. God will always lead us in the right direction, sometimes He has to give us a good push and sometimes He has to give us a good pull, but if we allow Him to lead, we are always in the best hands!!! Blessings to you!!!

Ehhh… I’m all for meeting people the old-fashioned way, but outside of some of the more lively, urban areas, few communities have many young, practicing Catholics. Even at that age.

That, and the fact that no tool is perfect, tools tend to break and so on.

Internet is real life. It’s not make believe or pretend, as some people think. It is just a medium. It is the same as talking at a church event, conference, coffee shop, whatever.

Now as for personal experience, the online dating websites have certainly taught me much. They have shown me a lot of people. I’ve been able to look at thousands of pictures, read about personalities, hobbies, expectations, plans etc. Some were unique, some were generic. I could probably run a couple of studies if I committed myself to it (however, I don’t really see a pattern in whom I attract on those websites, as opposed to real life). Generally, the biggest thing I’ve got out of them is expanding my horizons.

I did also confirm my suspicion that it would be very hard for me to find someone anyway. Someone I’d actually fully (not perfectly but more than just somewhat) click, get along with etc., mutually and with the absence of red flags. Very low probability.

Right now, I can recognise faces in thumbnails pulled randomly out of some several dozen thousand (depending on how many out of all female users upload photos). I can very easily recognise patterns in profiles. And yet, profiles don’t do it for me. Yeah, a nice person, would be great to meet, I would be suggesting having a coffee if we were from the same city and could keep it to just a coffee (and if I can avoid first name basis, I do it), but no compelling reason to buy a return ticket book a hotel for the night etc… Can’t really keep up a normal, friendly acquaintance, devoid of dramatic, heavy epistoles and de facto relationship (with each of such “pen friends”) building regardless of the absence of a formal relationship.

Also, choosing among several people with attractive but not compelling or even compelling but not conclusively decisive profiles, would be somewhat awkward. I’d feel bad setting up a semi-dating routine to “try them all out” (even the concept itself should make a gentleman cringe, I believe), and I totally reject randomness (or semi-randomness, like “the first one I come across”, where you have a defined procedure that leads to a conclusive result but the outcome is still random in relation to substantive issues).

All of the above in spite of the fact that I can actually very well imagine myself knowing that I want to marry a woman after talking to her for two hours at a cafe, even without any immediate romantic sparks present. In fact, I can imagine myself having gathered sufficient data to propose within that time-frame. 😛 Still, in most cases in practice, you just see an attractive but not compelling person and you gotta choose. For me, that’s not enough. I need to know why I’m making this choice and not that one, and randomness or the order of appearance is not an answer I’d accept.

On the other hand, plenty of folks have noted success with dating websites. In my case, I’ve learnt a couple of interesting biographies and made a couple of short-lasted but very interesting acquaintances, from a human point of view, not just romance. In one case maybe I regretted that nothing came out of it but I suppose it was for the better.

Same what you said.

Standard-issue advice: not all’s gold that glitters. People tend to look better in $100 professional photos than in self-taken mobile phone photos. Everyone can look like a celebrity with the right make-up and lighting, then again you’ve probably seen pictures of celebrities without make-up. Very ordinary, some of them, aren’t they? This works the same way for everybody. If looks are important to you, make sure you see a couple of pictures, from various angles, and not only blurred or otherwise artistically tampered ones. Pay attention to those that nobody was paid to take.

(By the way, pictures can express character and a lot of other things, although not conclusively.)

If you see fields that are lefty empty, they may be empty out of forgetfulness or lack of care or whatever similar reason. On the other hand, they may indicate a rather complicated outlook (e.g. when on Catholic dating website the field “opinion on premarital sex” is suddenly left empty, even though divorce and contraception are filled in). Don’t be paranoid, don’t be naive, either. And you can ask. Generally don’t hesitate to get to know someone without the pressure to woo him or her into a relationship. If you can keep it light, then all the better.

I had a friend who I wish I could set you up with, Chev, but I lost touch with her. 😦 I saw a lot of things in her I think you’d be attracted to, and vice versa.

Thank you for the thought, Havard. :tiphat: I hope she’s fine and has a good life.

Try Catholicmatch.com. Avemaria.com is too expensive. Also Catholicmatch has a forum and Events you can go to.

I also believe in doing it the normal way–developing a natural relationship with someone without the conceived intention of solely dating…

I met my husband on Catholicmatch. I would say it’s just another way to meet people. I also know at least 2 people who found their husbands on that site, and an handful of others who found spouses elsewhere online.

My favorite thing about it was that when I would meet someone in person, if it didn’t work out, I never had to see them again. I had always hated dating anyone in my circle of friends/acquaintances because I always felt like I was under a microscope.

When I joined, I was actually discerning if I was to be married or in religious life. I prayed in essence, “God, if you want me to be married, then send me someone to marry.”

I hope you find God’s Will for you, KFAN!

+1

It may take long to realise there’s no point dating people one knows one wouldn’t marry. It may take longer to realise that those who aren’t worth keeping as friends aren’t worth dating.

I have known people to have success with such websites. I took a look around on one after a major breakup, with similar reasons, wanting to find a good Catholic spouse. You would be surprised how many people on the site admit that they rarely go to mass or ramble philosophies that make me ill in the section describing their religion. Maybe it was just the area I lived in and the time I was checking it out. You could have better results, but God had other plans for how I was to meet my husband. He moved in next door!

Beware
I was with CM site eight months ago. I still get messages from them stating that other member want to talk to me. Another site, which I did not sign up to also are sending email-stating member are sending me messages too. It bothers me to no end that these sites are displaying my profile to their members. Knowing I left their sites long ago. Not knowing that I no longer a member to these sites the members are sending messages to a ghost. It is sad and wrong that the dating sites are deceiving their members to gain more members. . I spam both of these sites and just a little while ago I received more messages from them. I informed both sites that their site go right to my spam folder. As you can see the dating sites automatically send these messages out once or twice a month.

Reread your contract.
The point I am trying to make is that the same thing will happen to you. It is a way the site entices new members and more money.
I open my spam folder this morning. Guess what? More messages, alto I left these sites long ago.

Now you know why I do not want my photo and any more information about me on the internet. If you would like to share your email that.
Leewis 😦
