The government has not banned pro-life groups or teaching that abortion is wrong, it’s just comments from the education Minister
They recieve Canadian Government funding
Incorrect, funding comes from the Ontario government
If the Church won’t follow the dictates of their government, then their schools will either have to cease taking Government financing and charge tuition, or close.
I am sure that this is all part of a desire on the part of the Canadian Government to bring all of their schools under secular control.
Not possible, Catholic schools are still public schools operated by school boards
I think that the Bishops should take the radical choice. Cut off all government funding.
Not possible. Bishops have zero control over Ontario Catholic schools and have no say over funding. If a Catholic school has a student group that advocates the legality of abortion, the local Bishop has no power to prevent this.
There is no religious freedom in Canada.

Also no freedom of speech.
Freedom of religion and free speech are constitutionally established

Thanks for the info. I guess this is what I was trying to clarify in my understanding of the way the school funding system is set up in Ontario. A Catholic school there operates much differently than here in the US, it seems. I think Americans may be trying to make a parallel comparison between the distinction of of private/public schools and government funding.

Here’s some more info then

Publicly funded Catholic schools were constitutionally established at Confederation in 1867 because of the divide between Catholics and Protestants at the time. Public schools were more Protestant and Catholics feared Protestant influence on their children, so provinces were to fund public and Catholic schools (Catholic schools are also known as separate schools) and the only way to cease the Catholic school system is by a province having a Constitutional convention, which has been done before in Quebec. In this sense, they are not controlled by the diocese at all

I would either break the law and teach that it was wrong… or close the school.
The link to the story is here.

“In what pro-life leaders are calling a stunning and unprecedented attack on religious freedom, Ontario’s Education Minister has apparently declared that Catholic schools can no longer teach that abortion is wrong.”

n Canada we have a Charter of Rights and Freedoms and it includes freedom of religion.
Freedom of religion and free speech are constitutionally established
However, your government behaves as if that part of the Charter of Rights does not exist, and no judge will call them on it.

Thus, there is no religious freedom or freedom of speech in Canada.

Nice try. I’ve lived here my whole life and everyone has been awarded free speech with the exception of advocating violence. Yes, people get outraged over what people say, but the government isn’t jailing people for their opinions. I’ve openly criticized politicians in front of them and never have been in trouble for it

As for religious freedom, what makes you think that Stephen Harper, a very devout conservative Christian, would be preventing freedom of religion in Canada with his government? Some of his Cabinet members are known for being devout Christians. Why would he create the Office for Religious Freedom? Why is it I can do missionary work and be subjected to legal trouble? If there’s no freedom of religion, why am I not in jail for going to church or for preaching. Why are my friends not in jail for teaching the faith? It’s because we have freedom of religion

I’ve beginning to believe invcreasingly that the Canadian Charter of Human Rights favors the voice of the minority or the voice the squeaks the most.

The moral voice that is against abortion doesn’t necessarily make a big enough voice that matters at least from a political standpoint or that of the Canadian Supreme Court.

Four of the Nine Canadian Supreme Court judges are openly gay or lesbian. As for the five remaining judges that remains undisclosed.

Freedom today in any Democracy is increasingly becoming permeated in illusion and having least to do with Christian Moral principles…

There are approxiamately fiftty Catholic parochial schools in the Province of Ontario.
Most of these Catholic schools are struggling financially to keep their exclusiveness.
Add the pressures of government laws on existing upheld moral Catholic laws in parochial schools and the fact that many students that are enrolled within Catholic schools are (“not”) Catholic its not hard to see how outside pressures, along with social legal laws come to bear down upon these Catholic schooling systems.

It has come to the point here that the words “human rights” now set up red flags whenever I hear them. Those “Human Rights Tribunals” (are they still around in each province?) really got out of hand. See Stephen Boissoin prevails against Alberta’s human-rights censors.

Back to the OP:
Here’s what the Catholic Register has to say, reporting on Cardinal Thomas Collins’ response.
In part:
Comments from Ontario’s education minister that equate Catholic teaching on abortion with misogyny have provoked a letter of protest from Cardinal Thomas Collins and a call for the minister’s resignation from other irate Catholics.
Speaking to reporters on Oct. 10, Laurel Broten suggested that under the province’s new anti-bullying legislation Catholic schools should not be teaching that abortion is wrong because “Bill-13 is about tackling misogyny.”

Can someone please enlighten me about Christianity esp Catholics in Canada? I grew up near Canada and occasionally visited, listened to CKLW, etc. I had the impression that Canada was a culturally Christian country. However, when I read a Canadian news story online today which covered St. kateri’s canonization, every comment posted was hate-filled against Christians, and especially the Catholic church and its traditions. I was quite taken aback by the vitriol. Then I saw this post today and i was shocked. I would appreciate more information regarding this topic. Thank you.

There is a lesson here: the church should never accept money from the government and the government should get out of education.

Canada began as a Christian country. I believe the population of Catholics was higher than in most of the U.S.
Then history happened. Especially the Evil Sixties. The French population in the province of Quebec was Catholic, but they had their ‘Quiet Revolution’ wherein they rid themselves of most of their traditions, especially any bow to the authority of Rome. Now Quebec is Canada’s most ‘progressive’ province, leading the way to child killing and disordered sex. It was in Quebec, I believe (please correct me as I have not checked before posting) where the court case that brought down our abortion law happened/began.

We are hardly Christian anymore. We are not too different from the U.S. except that we (apparently) pride ourselves in not being so darn Christian as those Yanks.

When I was in public school in the mid to late '60s we said the Lord’s Prayer at the start of each day. By the time I finished grade 13 I believe the Lord’s Prayer had been banned from public schools.

I am really fed up. There was a comedy show I used to enjoy until they started using comedy to mock the Truth. They made so much fun of the idea that two men couldn’t get married in the States.

For the last few decades my tax dollars pay for abortions but not for eye glasses, PSA tests, dental work, and much more serious health issues.

Now I’m getting really worked up.:mad:

Ahem. It is all in God’s hands. May His holy Will be done.

This is just downright amazing. It would seem that the Catholic schools in Canada can not hardly even be called Catholic anymore with all of the stuff the government is forcing them to do. First they are required to have gay alliance clubs in their schools and now they are not allowed to teach about the immorality of abortion. 😦

Note that this was an off-the-cuff statement by the minister of education of Ontario during an interview. It is her opinion, not the “law” in Ontario.

It should also be reiterated that Canada has 10 provinces and 4 territories that each manage their own education departments. There is no homogeneous ‘education policy’, whether Catholic or Public, across the country. What happens in Ontario doesn’t necessarily happen in Newfoundland and Labrador or Prince Edward Island.

It should be noted that when we lived in Prince Edward Island each school was free to teach religion. Our kids went to a school where the student population was primarily Catholic and religious education and sacramental preparation was part of the curriculum. The school was ‘public’ in name but ‘Catholic’ in fact, with students from various communities/parishes in a ~300 square mile area.

this is harper government for you, last five years here has really shown attack on the faith here in canada, even in ontario.

i think the worse insualt is worldwide where instead of AD and BC people say they dont want to be related to god or saying "before christ so they use BCE and CE…sad part is it makes no sense since no such thing as that.

i see a huge problem with no teaching children the value of life. a few years ago i was working security in a mall and a 15 year old was hitting on me, i was in my early 20s .
we got to talking and her bragging was that she had had a abortion almost 10 times…
i was sad for two reasons, for once i asked if your gonna have relations why dont you at least use protection and two, how you can kill so many children…safe to say i did not pursue anything no matter how lonely i was.

this just reminds me of how lack of value life is now, think how how many children are missing all for the sack of politics and this notion of choice, you have a choice not have sex or not to use protection, the same way you have a choice to pick up a gun, your actions have reactions…

@blueeyed @ post #60: I think your explanation of anti-discrimination laws/cases in the U.S. is simplistic at best and wrong at worst. IIRC, the commerce clause was the basis of the ability to regulate public accommodations, not “taking money” and “giving” it to business owners. Perhaps I have misunderstood your comment?

Nah, De Gaulle just threw gas on the fire.

“Québec libre” had been a rallying call for a number of years before De Gaulle uttered the infamous “Vive le Québec…libre!” in July of '67.

It is too bad, because Quebec was the most catholic province in Canada! But then, of course, France was also very spiritual at one time. We have lost so much…and i can say this as I am french canadian with native descent born and raised in ontario. Even in 1969, things were still so catholic…I joined the convent for heaven’s sake, anyway, I am babbling. This is a century ago. We need God’s mercy and blessing!

This whole giant mess with Abortion being wrong in Canada we can all give thanks to the former late Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau.

Pierre Trudeau is a hero of the liberal media culture which conveniently insists that morality is a strictly personal matter to be determined by each individual and about which the state and even the church should have little authority.

Although there was already a cultural Revolution underway in the west in the '60s, there was no popular organized movement clamoring for abortion rights, easier divorce or increased legitimacy for homosexuality. Still, Trudeau, as Justice Minister in 1967 and Prime Minister in 1969, imposed these upon Canadians, whether they wanted them or not. Trudeau insisted that Canada must adopt his permissive society even if Canadians did not realize where he was leading them.

Trudeau’s Abortion Law a Result of “Political Liberalism”

The story of the change in the abortion law via the 1969 Onmibus Bill is told in the pamphlet, The Secular State, 1985, by historian Fr. Alphonse de Valk.
