Opinion: Trump turns the presidency into a dictatorship

Hmmm…is there something you have in mind? Perhaps government has evolved, but we’re talking about the presidency in particular. Do you really see the president as holding significantly greater power now, as opppsed to, say, 1918?

Yes…

Student, this article goes to the power of the federal government as a whole, not the power of the presidency. In fact, to the extent it talks about congressional enactments, it seems to be describing increased powers of the legislature.

Further, I can make a good argument that the 22nd amendment, limiting the president to 2 terms and passed in 1951, inherently limits the power of the president in a way never existent before.

What’s this excuse?
Trump doesn’t like oversight?
Clearly there is a war on solicitor generals and oversight. So I wonder what’s the excuse this time

Call it want you want. The chief executive has the inherent power to appoint certain positions and that almost invariably includes the right to discharge people filling those positions.

The bottom line is i don’t see anyone pointing to any law that says an IG can’t be discharged by the president.

He is making his move for dictatorship just as the heading suggests. Destroying oversight.

He’s doing what every president does - fire holdovers and fill them with who he wants.

The fact that he was elected in part on a platform of “drain the swamp” is an additonal consideration.

Once again - it’s not like anyone is quoting a law Trump violated.

I see a President destroying anyone who dared do oversight and question him. Immediate if disclosed to the public. The most dangerous president in 2 Centuries

…and I see you referring to Obama, for all intents and purposes.

I see the greatest president in the last 100 years.

Can anyone name the president who imposed martial law and suspended habeas corpus aka something a dictator would do?

LIncoln.

He is doing what no president does.
He fired his own political appointees as fast as any other.
The key is whether they have integrity and stand by their oath. Integrity is the enemy he destroys

I think Wilson and FDR qualify far more than Trump.

You mean during a secession of half the Republic. Are you really comparing anything now with Civil War? There is no comparison

What if it? It is in fact the president’s prerogative to appoint whoever he wants, and as a supporter I say if the people he appoints won’t fulfill the mandates he gives, he ought to replace them. Like it or not, disobeying your boss is a good way to get fired - whether in government or the private sector.

That is predictable that you do. But there is no comparison.
I noticed you haven’t tried to argue Trump is not at war with oversight. Good thinking
