Opinion: Trump turns the presidency into a dictatorship

This is interesting. If the governors don’t actually have the authority to tell me I can’t go out of my house, or make airplane parts with my CNC machine in my shop and ship them to Boeing, then as the chief law enforcement officer of the U.S., charged with upholding the Constitution throughout the land, is he really unable to tell people they can go about their constitutionally-protected business free of governors’ orders to the contrary?

Yes, he is unable, as interpreting the Constitution is not the power given to the executive branch. And there is the question. What is constitutional? His administration can file suit though and force a decision.
 
What is essentially being said here is that the states can override the Commerce Clause. Given that the Supreme Court has mostly ruled in favor of the federal government on this clause over the past 200 years, Trump could reason that the states’ shutdown orders are affecting interstate commerce and that reasoning could pass muster with the Supreme Court. There are decent precedents established during previous Democrat and Republican administrations for this outcome.

As an aside, I find it ironic that the Democrats fought so hard for the federal prerogative and now that it’s suddenly inconvenient, they’ll resort to the Amendment they spent generations rendering irrelevant.

See. I would have thought Trump‘s clumsiness in expressing a “pen and phone” thought process would have been well with open arms by the statist left.

Or he can just act and let the governors challenge him if that’s what they want to do. The president does not “interpret” the constitution, but he does have the power and duty to enforce it. If the governor of my state says I can’t go out of my house and the president countermands that order, ultimately the courts would decide who was right.

But this is different. Trump is arguing for freedom FROM statist mandates.

I absolutely agree with Hume that it is nonsense. This is the same guy that Fauci said never told him no. It was “okay” to every recommendation Fauci and his colleagues brought to him.
Despite his words, he acts like a republican (small “r” intentional), not like a statist.

I thank that you are misinterpreting Fauci.
Listening to people done not necessarily mean not responding with “no”.

The problem here is that we have established that if Trump were to act this way that, unless there is a statuary felony involved, nothing will be done to stop him. The power of impeachment as a constraint on executive excess has been abandoned - at least by McConnell’s Senate.

I think he was quite clear. Trump has been willing to go along with their advice.
Then get shot down that pathetic and underhanded reporter who asked him if he said what he said voluntarily. Good for him.

The power of impeachment was corruptly and dishonestly abused to hide a soft coup attempt by people like Schiff and Nadler.
 
There seems to be a common problem within political discussion to generalize both opposition and support. My objection to the OP is that it is ridiculously extreme. Not all who cannot stand the president are given to hyperbole and rhetoric, with words like “dictatorship” and “Nazis.” The same type of extremism was touted by conservatives when Obama was president. My own mother was convinced, based on the news she watched, that Obama would never voluntarily leave the White House.

I tend to ignore anyone who is always for Trump, or always against Trump, especially over the little things.
 
The headline chosen by the reporter and the magazine is unfortunate in that regard. I posted it for the content, and I wish they has used a different headline in the magazine.
 
Live and learn. I find the actual topic, the firing of the IG again worthy of discussion, as it reflects a “swampy” managerial style - a true irony. But that is just a problem with being narrow-minded, not dictatorial.

The accusations by some against Obama were, quite frankly, as idiotic as the ones against Trump.
