At the direction of Archbishop John Vlazny of Portland, Catholic Community Services has withdrawn from United Way of Lane County because of United Way’s funding of Planned Parenthood. The decision will cost Catholic Community Services 4% of its budget.

Another bishop standing up for what the Church teaches in his diocese. Things are definitely looking up! (It really doesn’t matter that it was 4% of the budget. What’s right is right, regardless, and takes precedent over money any time.)

We ought to start a club called BWS (Bishops with Spines) and sign up every bishop who stands for what’s right, publicly, in his diocese. At the end of the year, we can select one who did the best and give them an award, which they will probably humbly refuse, saying they were only doing the Lord’s work.

Planned Parenthood is ubiquitous.

They have weasled their way into the United Way, the Girl Scouts, and even our breakfast cereals.

I quit buying General Mills cereals years ago because they were donors to Planned Parenthood.

United Way is not a neutral party. They get very politically involved in some communities.

They have refused to funnel donations to the Boy Scouts because of their policy excluding homosexuals as leaders.

Best bet is to donate directly to charities and skip the United Way middle man.

I of course concur. Sadly, an new issue may arise within the Archdiocese:

United Way supports several St. Vincent de Paul programs, including rural financial literacy programs, the Second Chance Renter Rehabilitation program and basic-need programs for homeless families.

Executive Director Terry McDonald said the agency isn’t affected by the bishop’s recommendation to Catholic Community Services because St. Vincent de Paul is an independent agency — although Catholic Community Services also is an independent agency.

St. Vincent de Paul will offer to take over the Catholic Community Services grant, if needed, Mc*Donald said.

“It’s a valuable service and we want to make sure it’s covered. If there’s any way to provide those services through St. Vincent de Paul, we’ll do it,” McDonald said.

But Bunce said that for nonprofit agencies to call themselves “Catholic,” they must follow the bishop’s recommendations and operate in a manner consistent with Catholic social and moral teachings.
