An Oregon Catholic priest has been placed on leave by the Archdiocese of Portland as police investigate who placed a hidden camera, carefully disguised as an electrical outlet, in a church bathroom, the archdiocese said on Thursday.
The camera was discovered in late April near a toilet in the men’s bathroom of the St. Francis Catholic Church in Sherwood by a church member who took it immediately to Father Ysrael Bien, a police statement said.

oh dear! this is not good. I am a little confused - the camera was lost after it was discovered in the men’s bathroom and then they found it again later? couldn’t the memory card have been removed during the “lost” period? Certainly not good for the priest that he did not notify the proper authorities or the bishop when the hidden camera was found.

I have gone to St Francis Parish & met Fr Ysrael!!! I cannot believe
He would do anything like this!!! I am sure he is innocent of any wrong doing!!! This
Has to have been perpetrated by someone wanting to cause harm!
Though I do tip my hat to Archbishop Sample (who I know personally - though it was from before he was consecrated a bishop). He did what he had to do - both to protect the archdiocese and to keep the priest sheltered from being constantly attacked by the media (as he would have if he continued to be in a pastoral role).

I agree. Very wise.

In April, the camera was discovered in the men’s bathroom disguised as an electrical outlet. It did not have a scan disk in it to record images. It was taken out and placed in a secure location. However, the priest did not report the incident in April. Then the camera somehow disappeared and the priest reported it stolen in May. The reason the priest was put on leave is not because he is suspected of anything but because he did not report the incident right away, as he should have according to policy.

yes I understand why he was put on leave, but I was confused about the scan disk and if the camera was still lost.

👍

I am relieved that Fr Ysrael was not suspected of wrong doing. I am saddened that he demonstrated a lack of good judgement and did not follow policy by reporting the incident in the first place!

yes it did show lack of good judgment. so how was it found out and made public if he didn’t report it?
