Also could you please show me ONE Church that the devil did not enter? I would love to find that Church.

God told you the Devil would enter his Church, but he also said he would never prevail.

What makes everyone think God created Free Will?

The theory goes God created Free Will in hopes the better thinking would prevail and we would all choose him?

Thats not what happened in the Garden which satan so managed to enter. BTW if he could enter Gods Garden why in the world would you think he couldn’t enter Gods church?

Adam and Eve had no free will I contend. There choice was God and God only. God Commanded them to not eat of a specific Tree, There was no Sin to this point, no shame or guilt or negative human emotions either. Just BLISS
I would disagree with this assessment. There is no goodness without the ability to choose otherwise. Adam and Eve were created in the state of original innocence. The fact that they chose to disobey God is proof that that had free will. God did not create Adam and Eve as robots. When they chose evil everything changed for all of humanity and even creation itself. The effects of that sin weakened our will, darkened our intellect and left us with a tendency toward sin (concupiscence).

When we enter heaven, our free will is not removed. Concupiscence is removed and we tend toward goodness and the worship of our God. Jesus Christ certainly has free will and chose to remain faithful. Where Adam failed, Jesus prevailed. Each had free will.

QUOTE=Tuno;7166621]
See post #51 above. It doesn’t mean there isn’t “free” will, though we are, as humans trained by a family and peers, far, far, far less “free” than one might ever imagine. We “think” we are free, and are so busy being “right” that we are essentially asleep.

By “free will” I am not stating something learned or trained. The will I am speaking of is what makes up our humanity. We have a body, a soul = intellect, will, senses, memory. Have you ever seen a “will”? maybe a result of the will by some action or lack thereof; but no human can see a will because the will is of the spirit which is free. Scripture teaches;

Galatians 5:17
For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want.
18
But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
"those of the spirit are never under the law"

Romans 8:
For what the law, weakened by the flesh, was powerless to do, this God has done: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for the sake of sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,
4
so that the righteous decree of the law might be fulfilled in us, who live not according to the flesh but according to the spirit.
5
**For those who live according to the flesh are concerned with the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit with the things of the spirit. **
6
The concern of the flesh is death, but the concern of the spirit is life and peace.
7
For the concern of the flesh is hostility toward God; it does not submit to the law of God, nor can it;
8
and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9
But you are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
10
But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness.

It is true the “Will” of man is incarcerated by the flesh, and these two oppose one another, for the flesh is subject to the law, whereby the “Will” (spirit) or Psyche as St. Paul puts it, is never subjected to the law but is free from the law, this is “Freewill”. The body will return to dust, but your soul = will be judged by what your freewill believed, and works resulted from your freewill.
Original sin: assuming that the subject/object mode we almost always operate in is all there is available to us. Again, why do you think it has said from time immemorial: "Know Thyself

Great thinking D, I’m thinking on the feeling level.

I’m trying to place myself in their shoes “Adam and Eve” Before Satan arrives what was the Free Will? You know what I"m saying? If in fact Free Will is to chose Good or Evil ultimately. Then before satan arrives I don’t see the choice of Good or Evil. Unless we view the actual Fruit and commandment not to eat it as that choice. So lets for a second.

Then we also have to look at the emotional state of being of both Adam and Eve.

If the fruit would have had a negative consideration [which it did]. They couldn’t have known it at this point. God said your will surely die. They wouldn’t have known fear, anxiety, uncertainty. That had to came after the serpent.

OK so what did they have for feeling? Only positive with no negative? They didn’t know shame, insecurity, or self.

So wthout satan what have been the feeling that would have drove Adam and Eve? It had to be a positive feeling. And how one has positve but not negative feelings truly is a work of God.

In the case man or woman might have chose that Fruit without satans temptation? They then would had to have done so already knowing what God said. “It will KIll you”. So without the instilled confidence and promise from the serpent and his words. Would in fact the fruit have been eaten? I don’t think so, knowing they didn’t have the negative emotions until after the fruit was eaten. They coudn’t have had the positve emotions either. I don’t think? But they then must have had positive emotions, of excitment, joy, beauty, etc. And these are what they did act of? I’m assumimng here, but its the best I can come up without saying GOD only knows.

In other words there had have been something there. Even though we know of the grave consequence by God, shame, insecurity, which came after the fruit was eaten, etc. There had to heve been emotions there already no?

Was the feeling of pain there? If so not much. because God certainly became grafic and adament about child birth?

I’m probly reading to much into this from my own clinical mind.

Passing thoughts,

Like so much in the Bible, theres so little said and so much to infer from it?

Today its easy to say what is, is. But at last we have great minds our here today and much information. And these are the questions that scream for attention, and those unassuming, humble great minds ask. And they do expect educated answers.

God Bless, GT
But here is something you may be forgetting. God told Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit. Now they knew that they were wrong to do it. How do we know? Simple. They went and hid from God. Now as I said earlier it was not their sin that was so bad, it was their unwillingness to admit the sin. What did they do after they sinned? They went and hid from God.

Now God asked them a number of times why are you hiding. Again instead of repenting and saying we ate the fruit Lord you asked us not to eat, they ran and hid. And then lied why they were hiding. They said we are naked. Not we have sinned Please forgive us.

Again they used their free will again to lie to God. And continued to do so, instead of admitting that they did wrong and disobeyed him.

Kind of puts things in a perspective for us too don’t you think SteveH. You would think we would learn the first time around.

But we don’t. We still seem to choose sin at times over God weaken ourself with God, and what happens when we separate ourself from him. Same thing as Adam and Eve we continue to darken our intellect once again. Will we ever learn:o

Neither am I. While what we perceive as free will is a condition of the subject/object mode, necessary as it is a state of dualism, the choices we make with that free will are very determinate by dint of training and experience, especially to the extent that those are unexamined and left operating at levels covered over by further growth. Witness your own reliance of quotes as distinct from an integrity derived from self observation that leads to Universals regarding self awareness and therefore morality. That doesn’t mean God isn’t. I means that what God IS is obscured by faith paradigms of any sort. In other words, as a subject/'object thinker, you are yet “in the flesh,” as you quote.
It is true the “Will” of man is incarcerated by the flesh, and these two oppose one another, for the flesh is subject to the law, whereby the “Will” (spirit) or Psyche as St. Paul puts it, is never subjected to the law but is free from the law, this is “Freewill”. Yes, but you misunderstand Paul. He was speaking of one mature in Spirit, Self aware of actual relationship with God, not with dogmatism and book learning. As for “judgement” it is not, again, what is ordinarily understood by the lay mind.
You must forgive my lack of your intellectual level here, but I cannot make heads or tails from your above comment, so I will address the purpose of “examination of conscience”.
The Catholic Church obeys the Word of God on the instruction of the examination of conscience to protect the children of God from the curse;
There is nothing to forgive. You have a perfectly wonderful and excellently functioning intellect. You simply lack certain kinds of experience which may or may not come to you, and which you are blameless about in any case. God is LOVE, and not about intellect and “proofs.” Give yourself a break, Angel. The “curse,” is as is any crisis, but an opportunity. YOu will make of it what you will and experience the consequences, as do we all. What could be more perfect? How else would we learn?

And yes, confession is good for the soul, insofar a it is used as an integrative exercise in self awareness. Otherwise it is a futility clothed in piety and guilt. Certainly a lack of self awareness and integrity results in disease. Look at Richard Bandler who talked his Mother out of metastatic breast cancer. She had scripted herself to die. After three days (the usual time) it was gone and she lived another eleven years. Did God have anything to do with that? Yes, God was the center and circumference of it all, but not as an intervener. Clarity saved the day, clarity being a functional synonym for grace.

This is why we use each other for mirrors, even if the “other” happens to be a priest, rabbi, mulla, shaman, friend, barkeep, taxi driver, or an anonymous confession page on the internet. It is a self sorting teleological process of integrations. If religion serves that function for you, great. You are not alone. 🙂
Peace be with you
Amen

We tend toward sin because of the sin of our first parents. Nevertheless, we still do the choosing and continue to separate ourselves from God when we choose sin. I long for the day when our only desire is to serve and worship God, in other words, to do what He created us to do. 👍

Tuno, I was just curious. You state that you are “not atheist” and “not theist” and “not agnostic”. I don’t understand how this is possible. This is nothing personal, it is just confusing to me. Can you tell me where you stand?

Thanks

Love your signature quote: “Let the time come when those who should oblige the servant of God, do the contrary to him, and what degree of patience and humility he has then, that is the degree he has and no more.” - St. Francis of Assisi

I’m curious how you read that. St. Francis, along with five other Catholic greats, are some of my favorite poets, especially as anthologized in Love Poems from God edited by David Ladinsky.

As for my “position,” due to a profound mystical experience in my 17th year and the subsequent years of incorporation and re-idientification which resulted in an association with a profound Mentor, it might go by any number of “labels,” almost all misleading and inadequate. Even the Catholic Encyclopedia has it wrong, imho. You might say, though, that I am a proponent of non dualism, or the Perennial Philosophy, or Advaita, or the Path of Ultimate Responsibility, or the Absolute, or just Joy and its myriad names.

It is the only system of Understanding that has consistently arisen throughout history despite time, place, culture, or any other factor, even absence of communication between its proponents. It speaks to the root of religion and is before religion. And the Identity statements in both the OT and NT are congruent with it.

I hope that helps, or is at least entertaining 🙂

That’s all we have. Where does it come from? Where does it go? Who perceives it? How? The greatest gift is to be able to go beyond the “thought” mind.

You say God did not create us as robots [agree’d], but to Love, love is a feeling. So what I:m saying is could it be possible that wonderful and positive feelings may exist without negative? Apparently so, since shame, guilt, insecurity and to a degree pain didn’t exist before the serpent? And God then arrived to speak to Adam and Eve.
Love is a verb. 🙂

Without free will our creation would have been one of bondage, that is, what kind of love is love that is forced? Adam, Eve, and all of us are not forced to love God. He gave us free will in order that we could love Him freely.

Original Sin is privation of original justice.

**1807 ***Justice *is the moral virtue that consists in the constant and firm will to give their due to God and neighbor. Justice toward God is called the “virtue of religion.” Justice toward men disposes one to respect the rights of each and to establish in human relationships the harmony that promotes equity with regard to persons and to the common good. The just man, often mentioned in the Sacred Scriptures, is distinguished by habitual right thinking and the uprightness of his conduct toward his neighbor. “You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.” “Masters, treat your slaves justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.”

Tuno,

I belong to the Secular Franciscan Order so St. Francis is near and dear to my heart. That particular saying has always struck me just due to its penetrating insight into the human heart. What it means to me is that it is very easy to be patient and humble with those that treat us well. But it is only when we are slapped in the face at the very moment that we deserve the opposite, that the true degree of our patience and humility is revealed. Personally, I fail miserably in this regard and so decided to use that as my signature line in order to help keep myself honest.

As for your philosophical position, I must admit that you have lost me as I am not familiar with “Perennial Philosophy, or Advaita, or the Path of Ultimate Responsibility”. You sound like a great person though and I’m glad you’re on this forum.

God bless you.

Steve

Have you ever read any of the Christian mystics? Mystical prayer has always fascinated me for the simple reason that it is completely beyond the intellect, requiring no thought. It is instead a divine embrace. As you might imagine it is difficult if not impossible to fully grasp for the simple reason that it is beyond the intellect and any attempt to describe it in human language can only diminish it.

Edit: I just realized that I may be leading the conversation completely off topic. Sorry folks.

Serious question here:

What, exactly, IS it?
This is easy. Original means first and sin, well let’s let John explain. 1Jn.3
4Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
So original sin is the first transgression of God’s law and that was committed in God’s home, heaven. Isaiah 14

12How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
15Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

So God threw Lucifer, who had now become Satan, out of heaven and where did He throw him to. Rev. 12
9And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

He was thrown to the earth where he “originally” tempted Adam and Eve and continues to tempt us today.

Neither am I. We are still not on the same page here regarding the freewill. You have left the substance of freewill topic and are dealing with the result of what the freewill has gained in knowledge and acts upon a knowledge gained from the intellect excercised by the freewill, for example; do not eat of the forbidden tree, man learns this from God, and acts from this gained knowledge and from mans freewill chose to disobey God who knew the result from such an action “death” although his passions decieved him into believing a Lie from another source “the serpent”. God is Spirit.

The feeling is mutual. I am glad you are here. I feel that you made an exemplary exposition of the Quote for the beloved Saint. Had you been interested, I could give you few authors who would allow you to have at least some intellectual clarity on non dualism. It is not, by any means, either a popular nor an easily understood Way. The numbers of those alleged to have competence to approach it are remarkably small, though it is may feeling that it is at the actual core of Catholic teaching, but exceptionally well occluded. So that you have not heard of the various labels is no surprise. In fact, for the most part, the exemplars of this Way most usually decline to name themselves by any label, and rightfully so, despite that most of them have arrived at said Way independently and despite absence of intercommunication in most cases, have pretty much precisely the same take despite any conditions they live in circumstantially. So it tends to remain a mystery and that is well and good, as usually it becomes an unnecessary can of worms for the vast majority of people faced with its ideas. But those are secondary, as anything that can be said is for all practical purposes an indicator that one should look within the Souls as the Image and Likeness of God. Say that, I have already likely said too much. But in any case, if nothing else, it is a great Story!

What you say is not, imho, off topic simply for the fact that it is in fact the actual and only practical way from belief to overcoming the “stain” of original sin, though it can only be called that from a particular perspective.

Yes, I have read the Christian mysitcs, as well as some others. the bring me over and over from laughter of recognition to tears and back again. Six of my favorites are anthologized in David Ladinski’s Love Poems From God. A friend of mine actually made a theatrical production from those, and included the Words of our mutually beloved Mentor.

Out Mentor was absolutely in love with St. Francis. He actually had a vision of him at the beginning of his speaking career, which began when he was over 50. At one point he visited Assisi. Upon seeing him, Brother Michael, I think it was, one of the caretakers there, grabbed his hand and would not let go until he left the shrine and church, gifting him with a rose as he departed. Our Mentor was conducted this way through every nook and cranny, and was shown things relative to St. Francis that few see. I will never forget his recounting of that visit.

He often told us that we must go beyond our mind and its shenanigans, that we must learn to ride it like a horse. Few had any clue what he meant by “beyond the mind.” It sounds as though you might be one of the rarities who might. He loved the symbol of the Winged Victory, saying that “To fly, you must have no head” and then that “the head and the heart must dance together.” He was an exceptionally practical man, astonishingly deep, and I have no doubt would have loved to meet you. But he has passed some six years ago. I miss him terribly, and have had the exceptional fortune to find a few living individuals of his Stream who are also remarkable individuals. God is Good, my friend. We are never and always alone. Such is the mystery of Life, such is the Divine Embrace, and that is why the Silence is never broken by one who speaks as Love.

Blessings and Best,

A

Yes, and as you write, I see that we will not be on the same page as long as you persist in belief. That is fine; you are doing very well.
I only introduced a word (Psyche) of Paul that he uses to describe the spirit = will. I gave no definition on how Paul uses Psyche, only when Paul used it. Paul also describes this will of the spirit in terms of the Pneuma. What is interesting scripture seperates the body, spirit, soul here; 1Thes.5:23
4 May the God of peace himself make you perfectly holy and may you entirely, spirit, soul, and body, be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Yes, many educational devices are used by St Paul and others. Usually they are misunderstood until there is some form of mystical insight similar to his own. The best thing you might be able to do for yourself is to energetically pursue all your faith point to their end. You will do well, I have no doubt. Just be awake to your own processes around them.

Thanks for your note; Blessings and Best.
