I don’t know anything what so ever about the Orthodox church. Can you please tell me what makes it different from the Catholic Church?

1 - When did they split from the Catholic Church?

2 - What is their basic doctrine?

3 - Do they believe in the Holy Eucharist?

?

…but what makes them different?
They aren’t in communion with the Church.
They don’t believe the Catholic Church is the Catholic Church.
They don’t accept any new councils.
They don’t consider Saint Augustine to be credible (he’s “too Catholic”)
They don’t have the same Church Fathers
They don’t believe apparitions can give messages
They don’t care if our sacraments are valid
They don’t believe in a purifying fire after death
They don’t believe you can say how the Eucharist happens
They don’t regard the Pope as the Supreme Pontiff
They don’t like Latin and or anything Western (“Latinization”)
Some believe in a “Great Revelation” some so-called saint gave
Some believe a so-called fire descends from Heaven in Jesus’ tomb (but they forbid Catholics from witnessing it)
Some believe they are superior to Catholics (“We are what you once were and you are what we are not”)
Some bash Catholics quite a lot on their websites
Some seem to be taught lies about Catholics by their priests

They aren’t in communion with the Church.
We believe we have the fulness of the faith.
They don’t accept any new councils.
We honor the first seven great councils of the undivided Church.
They don’t consider Saint Augustine to be credible (he’s “too Catholic”).
That is a lie. Orthodoxy considers him as a great saint and father of the Church.
They don’t have the same Church Fathers
We have all the same Church Fathers until the split.
They don’t believe apparitions can give messages
There have been many holy signs throughout the history of the Church.
They don’t care if our sacraments are valid
We only know that our sacraments are valid.
They don’t believe in a purifying fire after death
We do not claim to know about a doctrine of purgatory which was defined in the 19th century.
They don’t believe you can say how the Eucharist happens
We do not use the word “Transubstantiation”. We know that the Holy Eucharist is the most precious Body and Blood of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. It is the Real Presence.
They don’t regard the Pope as the Supreme Pontiff
We regard all bishops as equal.
They don’t like Latin and or anything Western (“Latinization”)
Huh???
They believe in a “Great Revelation” some so-called saint gave

The Holy Fire is a wonderful miracle that happens every year in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher on the date of Orthodox Pascha (Resurrection Matins).
Some believe they are superior to Catholics (“We are what you once were and you are what we are not”)
Where do you get this stuff?
Some bash Catholics quite a lot on their websites
Sadly, you can find bashing everywhere in cyber-space when you look for it.
Some seem to be taught lies about Catholics by their priests
Yes. But it works both ways.

It has never been proven to be a “fraud” over many centuries.

But you and your wife are entitled to your opinion.

Thank you for the clarifications.

A great saint, yes. A Church Father? Nope. At least not a credible one. Most Orthodox I’ve spoken to have said he’s “too Catholic”.
Latinization
It’s a popular term some Orthodox use to bash Catholics and to hold onto their cultural-religious identity.
Great Revelations
It’s a so-called revelation from a so-called saint. I believe you can find it using Google.
Where do you get this stuff?
I paraphrased a quote from one of your clerics. You are free to find the source of it.

All the information I have on Orthodox comes from Orthodox. The same goes for other non-Catholics. I like to go to the sources of information. But my memory isn’t perfect, so I do make mistakes. Thanks again for the clarifications.

Thank you.

I completely disagree. There is no proof.

But then, that is my opinion. I hope to witness it myself one day soon. Then I’ll get back to you. 👍

both the Catholics and the Orthodox believe themselves to be the original true Church…

the reason I believe in the Catholic Church though is because of the Pope, we can see that in Scripture and history, and the Orthodox deny the Papacy.

Yes. A great saint and a church father. Too Catholic?!? Are you serious?

Lol! Your own Eastern Catholic brethren have a more difficult time with the term “Latinization” than do the Orthodox! Especially the Ruthenians (I used to be Ruthenian Catholic).

That’s okay. I will not waste my time if it does indeed exist.

You are welcome. But remember my friend–I was a Roman Catholic for 30 plus years. You would not like it if I said I get my information about the Catholic Church from fellow Catholics. I used to be appalled by some of the things I used to hear from my Catholic brethren–everything from being pro-choice (death) to non-belief in the Real Presence to “I don’t need a priest to confess my sins, but I can still receive communion every week” etc, etc, etc.

I think you get my drift.

Blessings,
Mickey

There is a difference of opinion. Many consider his devotional writings outstanding while calling into question some of his theological writings.

I’ve not heard the term “latinization” used in Orthodox circles although it’s very common among Eastern Catholics. Perhaps you are confusing the two?

Well I googled my “so-called” little heart out and I can’t figure out what you’re talking about. Could you post a link so we can address your “so-called” issue.

How about instead you made the assertion so you provide the source. 👍

Well I sure would love to see some of these “so-called” sources. Can you provide a link?

Wow! Excellent journey. God bless you.

You are correct. The lack of charity between Catholic and Orthodox is deplorable. I have been guilty of it many times here and I am deeply sorry. To all I may have offended, please forgive this sinner.

There is no lack of charity and respect.

It pales in comparison to the way I see Catholics treated on some Protestant websites. 🙂

Yes. Even the Catholics are prone to critique when it comes to his dabblings with predestination–because the calvinists picked up on it and mutated it into a sort of double predestination.

Actually, that “we are what you once were, we believe what you once believed” quote seems to be used extensively by Traditionalist Catholics (like this one - scroll all the way down to the last quote).

Also, Forum Member chrisb, a Roman Catholic, uses it in his (her? sorry) signature.

I can’t find any instance of it being used by the Eastern Orthodox. And no one seems to know the original source for it. Do you?

Anyone familiar with postings will know that I’m extremely skeptical of private revelations and mystical phenomena, even if many of the people involved were recognized to have manifested holiness by the Catholic Church. Give the above, I’m equally likely to be skeptical of weeping icons or holy fire or whatnot. I remember having the same (very negative) reactions recently to a purported tollhouse relelation (similar to purgatory) that the deceased Theodora (wife of an iconoclast Byzantine emperor) purportedly gave to someone after her death, and which have in the past two centuries have become popularized in the Russian church. (I think one such book containing this revelation iscalled “Mysteries from beyond the grave”)

There is however a key difference between Catholic and Orthodox - there is a commendable conservatism in the Orthodox tradition that prevents this mystical or popular phenomena from impacting the liturgy or iconography. Their fidelity to their received traditions is a big reason why Immaculate Heart or Sacred Heart pictures or Divine Mercy icons will never proliferate in the East. Also, the method of prayer, warns people not to use their imaginations, also acts as a mechanism against potentially false visions. (View this link, it introduced me to many of these concepts). A monk who has fasted and moritified himself, who is encouraged to use his imagination in prayer, is more likely to experience visions, then a monk who has fasted and moritifed himself, who has trained himself to put to sleep discursive thought. The conservativism of the Orthodox Church has safeguarded it from error.

I was halfway through my post when I realized something: You guys are asking me to provide information about your own church.

So. If you want the information, than just go to your priests. Go to an Orthodox website, like that one wikia for Orthodox. You can even use the Search function to find most of the info I’ve provided. I’m not going to give my sources. Why? Because I’m tired of doing other people’s work. I am tired of non-Catholics demanding Catholics to do the work for them. So I’m putting my foot down this time. You want the info? Go find it for yourself. I’m not going to be a rug today.

Well if you’re tired of providing sources stop making unfounded assertions! It is nothing more than simple courtesy to provide references for the information you post on a public forum.

If you refuse to give us references I can only assume one of two things, either you don’t have them or you don’t want us to scrutinize them. If it is the former you are being grossly irresponsible and if it’s the latter you are being intentionally dishonest.

Yours in Christ
Joe
