I’m not sure if this fits here or not. Saw this video posted elsewhere and wondered if perhaps some here might be interested.

It’s a Western Rite Orthodox Mass for Easter from a Western Rite Orthodox parish in the Detroit area:

I was chrismated in a Western Rite Orthodox parish. (Paschal Vigil)

Both the Antiochian Archdiocese and ROCOR have Western Rite parishes and liturgies.

In Christ,

I have never been to a Western Rite Orthodox Mass. After watching this, I think I’d like to someday.

That’s really interesting. O_o

And what does this have to do Eastern Catholicism?

My apologies. If it should not be here, I ask the moderators to remove it. I did not mean to cause any offense.

I connected it as vaguely related due to the relationship between Eastern Catholicism and Orthodoxy. But, again, if it offends, would someone please remove this thread?

Thanks for sharing this, Peter. I don’t think many folks are aware of this usage in a small number of Orthodox parishes. I had thought the Western Rite was largely with ROCOR in Australia and New Zealand, This is an American parish. I think at times this has been an accommodation in Orthodoxy as is the current situation with Anglicans seeking full communion with the Latin Church.

My guess would be that they receive that weird step child attitude you find those who prefer the Extraordinary form of the Roman Rite Mass getting in the Latin Church, and which we Eastern Catholics also often get in the Latin Church.

(Off topic… I just tried to use OrthodoxWiki and it’s… gone… I either get “Not Found” or nothing. .Anyone know what’s up with that.)

I dunno. I feel there are people more knowledgeable about the east here than in other forums on this board. I’ve seen a few threads in the non-catholic thread about orthodoxy that never come to the attention of Alexander Roman, Malphono and others.

It seems to work fine for me. Make sure you’re typing in “orthodoxwiki.org” and not .com or something else.
It’s working again, :clapping:
Maybe the site or their server was doing some kind of maintenance when I was trying to use the site. None of the pages worked. I’ve not had that experience before on their site.

I’ve always considered the Tradtional Latin Mass to be a sort of a Western Orthodoxy.

The Orthodox Western Rite is sort of like the Eastern Catholics, but in reverse, if you think about it. There’s one not far from my home, but I’ve not been to it.

Hi All,

Just thought I’d comment since I saw a reference to the video of the Orthodox parish I serve.
I had thought the Western Rite was largely with ROCOR in Australia and New Zealand, This is an American parish.
There are about 40 Western Rite Orthodox parishes in the U.S. 24 are in the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America; the rest are in the Russian Church Outside of Russia. In addition, there are an undetermined number of Eastern Rite Orthodox priests who have been given the blessing by their bishop to celebrate occasionally the Western Rite mass.
I think at times this has been an accommodation in Orthodoxy as is the current situation with Anglicans seeking full communion with the Latin Church.
While the Western Rite is an accommodation to Anglicans, it is more than that. The Western Rite is a witness that Orthodoxy is not merely Byzantine or Slavic; i.e., tied to only one or a few cultural expressions. (The same could be said of Eastern Rite Catholicism as it relates to the Catholicism.)

The restoration of the Western Rite in the Orthodox Church begins with a former Lutheran, and drew heavily upon Old Catholic churches. The parish I serve is mostly comprised of former Lutherans.

Father, Bless,

I always had a few questions about the Western Rite that I’d be curious to get ‘confirmation’ on.
  1. The Western Rite always uses leavened bread, yes?
  2. The Western Rite prays the Stations of the Cross? Do you use the ‘Stabat Mater’ hymn?
  3. How different is the fasting schedules between the Eastern and Western Orthodox?
  4. Do you kneel in the Western Rite?
  5. I’m assuming it goes without saying that infants are Baptized, Communed, and Chrismated?
  6. Westerners do not venerate post-Schism Saints, do they?
Thank you, Father!

Father, Bless,
Praised be Jesus Christ! Now and forever. Amen!
  1. The Western Rite always uses leavened bread, yes?
The Western Rite Orthodox churches use leavened bread. The Eucharist is distributed under both kinds; commonly by intinction, but not in every instance.
  1. The Western Rite prays the Stations of the Cross? Do you use the ‘Stabat Mater’ hymn?
The Stations of the Cross is authorized for use in Western Rite parishes in the Antiochian Archdiocese. (I’m not familiar with the practice in ROCOR.) Stabat Mater may be sung, and is the sequence for the Mass of the Seven Sorrows of the BVM (15 September).
  1. How different is the fasting schedules between the Eastern and Western Orthodox?
Western Rite parishes in the Antiochian Archdiocese use the fasting schedule which was in place in Roman churches prior to 1962. However, many priests authorize parishioners to abstain from flesh-meat throughout Lent and on Wednesdays.
  1. Do you kneel in the Western Rite?
Parishioners in Western Rite parishes in the Antiochian Archdiocese kneel during the Canon at every Mass, throughout Low Mass and Sung Mass (missa cantata), and at other appropriate times, according to the rubrics.
  1. I’m assuming it goes without saying that infants are Baptized, Communed, and Chrismated?
Infants are baptized, chrismated and communed in Western Rite parishes.
  1. Westerners do not venerate post-Schism Saints, do they?
Western Rite parishes venerate post-Schism saints; however, these are not saints canonized by the Church of Rome, but by the Orthodox patriarchates and their dependencies.

I hope this information is helpful.

Asking your prayers,

Fr John W Fenton
