The fact that I believe post-schism Rome has veered from the path of Orthodoxy; The fact that I believe post-schism Rome has embraced doctrinal innovation; The fact that I do not agree with much of the Thomistic theology of the Latin Church;

Does not mean that I seek division.

I seek truth.

Truth cannot be compromised.

May God bless you on your journey.

St Mark of Ephesus pray for us.
It appears to me that humility is truth. I know not whether I am humble, but I know that I see the truth in all things.

An apple tree is still an apple tree whither weathered or worn if it still produces that still sweet fruit. We may debate on the means at cultivating but we will know them by their fruit.

What is true of the second century, of the third century, is true for the Greek East, and true till the schism of the eleventh century, which could justify itself only by repudiating, as far as this point is concerned, the doctrine of the ten preceding centuries.
Many Roman Catholic apologists such as yourself proclaim this as fact. But there is zero evidence that the papacy of the first millenium was in any way similar to the modern day papacy which proclaims supremacy and infallibility–a doctrine that was innovated by post schism Rome, championed by the ultra-montanists and officially defined by Pius IX in 1870. 🤷

“In so far as this is what has been commanded you by the Holy Apostles,-stand aright, hold firmly to the traditions which you have received, both written and by word of mouth, that you be not deprived of your firmness if you become led away by the delusions of the lawless. May God, Who is All-powerful, make them also to know their delusion; and having delivered us from them as from evil tares, may He gather us into His granaries like pure and useful wheat, in Jesus Christ our Lord, to Whom belongs all glory, honor, and worship, with His Father Who is without beginning, and His All-holy and Good and Life- giving Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.”
St Mark of Ephesus

By the prayers of St. Mark, O Christ our God, and all Thy Holy Fathers, Teachers and Theologians, preserve Thy Church in Orthodox confession and lead many into a knowledge of the Truth, unto the ages!

Can anyone prove that before the Schism the Pope had supreme universal ordinary jurisdiction over the entire Church? It seems to me that since it is the Catholic Church that is making these exalted claims about itself the the onus falls on Catholics to prove that these things are true.

Yours in Christ
Joe
What you might, also, want to take a look at is that the power of Orders, which exists to bring the redemptive virtue to souls, is a physical spiritual participation of the spiritual power of Christ the Priest. For if “the instrument must be proportioned to the agent” there will have to be a proportion, a conformity between those who act as the habitual instruments of redemption and Christ, who is its source. Hence the power of Order. Like every sacramental character, the power of Order is a physical spiritual power and hence indelible. It can persist, and even be transmitted, in schism and heresy. The power of jurisdiction, which exists for the external preaching of Christian truth, speculative and practical, is a moral authority, mission and power; it is kept on the line of truth and preserved from error by providential aid involving various prophetic graces ranging from oral and scriptural inspiration, the privilege of the Apostles, to the graces of assistance given to their successors. It is lost as soon as the subject leaves the Church. Apostolic authority, but not the power of Orders, was lost to Judas. No regular jurisdiction can of itself continue under conditions of heresy and schism.

Many Eastern Orthodox apologists such as yourself proclaim this as fact. But there is pleny of evidence that the papacy existed in teh first millenium and that the Pope held authority simialr to what he holds today. Eastern orthodox ecclesiology was innovated in the East due to Powere stuggles with in the Roman Empire.

So then you are saying that Rome retains Her orders but has lost Her Apostolic authority? :hmmm:

Pope St Gregory the Great (540-604)
“I say it without the least hesitation, whoever calls himself the universal bishop, or desires this title, is by his pride, the precursor of anti-Christ, because he thus attempts to raise himself above the others. The error into which he falls springs from pride equal to that of anti-Christ; for as that wicked one wished to be regarded as exalted above other men, like a god, so likewise whoever would call himself sole bishop exalteth himself above others”
Could you please cite that so we don’t think you are taking it out of context. :o

Our Blessed Mark speaks the words of our Blessed Apostle Paul and our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in the Parable of the Wheat and Tares. He cries out to our Lord and our God to keep us on that ‘narrow’ path. It is a very noble ‘spiritual good’ but it can be used to sew distinction. This very noble ‘spiritual good’ can be used to claim particular status among the creatures of God and so we should be very careful in how we interpret this humble cry to God for perseverance. We must be careful how we add or take away from that deposit of faith some understand to be the consensual teachings pasted down to us from the Apostles. We must be careful to what teachers we allow influence our understanding of this prayer.

When I think of this I am reminded of word of St. Catherine of Genoa: Love makes men just, simple, pure, rich, wise, and contented, and with its sweetness lessens every grief. ~ Life and Doctrine

Our Blessed St. Paul asked us “earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way. Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels., but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing… Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.” But Love never fails. It is, as our Blessed Apostle, said a more excellent way.

Nourishing the fruit of the Spirit in love is our path. It opens the door to that interior kingdom. When we can cease from the carnal pursuit of these divisions there will be no unity in the One for us. We know ‘the Way’. We know ‘the Marks’ of discipleship. His Law is written on our hearts not our heads and if we can order ourselves to our hearts will will not fear and we will need no external means to establish our orthodoxy. They will know it by our fruits. May we prayer for that day.

I always here this doctrinal innovation thing from the Orthodox however they never claim what it is.

2Peter 2:1-3

But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there shall be among you lying teachers, who shall bring in sects of perdition, and deny the Lord who bought them: bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their riotousnesses, through whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you. Whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their perdition slumbereth not.

Pope St. Innocent I (408 AD)

“In seeking the things of God . . . following the examples of ancient tradition . . . you have strengthened . . . the vigor of your religion with true reason, for you have acknowledged that judgment is to be referred to us, and have shown that you know what is owed to the Apostolic See, if all of us placed in this position are to desire to follow the apostle himself [Peter] from whom the episcopate itself and the total authority of this name have emerged. Following him, we know how to condemn evils just as well as we know how to approve what is laudable. Or rather, guarding with your priestly office what the Fathers instituted, you did not regard what they had decided, not by human but by divine judgments, as something to be trampled on. They did not regard anything as finished, even though it was the concern of distant and remote provinces, until it had come to the notice of this See [Rome], so that what was a just pronouncement might be confirmed by the authority of this See, and thence other churches—just as all waters proceed from their own natal source and, through the various regions of the whole world, remain pure liquids of an incorrupted head. . . .” (Letters 29:1)

Council of Chalcedon (451 AD)

“Bishop Paschasinus, guardian of the Apostolic See, stood in the midst [of the Council Fathers] and said, ‘We received directions at the hands of the most blessed and apostolic bishop of the Roman city [Pope Leo I], who is the head of all the churches, which directions say that Dioscorus is not to be allowed to sit in the [present] assembly, but that if he should attempt to take his seat, he is to be cast out. This instruction we must carry out” (Acts of the Council, Session 1)

St. Peter Chrysologus (449 AD)

“We exhort you in every respect, honorable brother, to heed obediently what has been written by the most blessed pope of the city of Rome, for blessed Peter, who lives and presides in his own see, provides the truth of faith to those who seek it. For we, by reason of our pursuit of peace and faith, cannot try cases on the faith without the consent of the bishop of Rome” (Letters 25:2)

Brother this is not in the spirit of charity in which we are called to dialogue with our brothers. This pride. Let us put this kind of ‘tit-for-tat’ one-up-manship away.

tell me. is he talking about himself here? or is there other popes out there i dont know about? how many popes did we have then? was there other popes in his time? just curious.

Pope St. Innocent I (408 AD)
My dear brother in Christ. I think it has been pointed out to you that the dueling battle of Church Father quotes is pointless. I have a ton of em! We need only to reflect on the example set by the Church of the first millenium. And it surely had no supreme infallible universal pontiff of Rome as we today see in the Latin Catholic Church. 🤷

Brother, I liked the prayer. I thought I could apply it to our Church.

purgatory
I believe that the Eastern Orthodox have the same belief about Purgatory as the Catholics however you do not have a name for it, and you doctrines about it are less refined however you are arguing about semantics. Don’t claim that your belief about praying for the dead and Theosis is not the same as our belief about Purgatory.
I believe the Orthodox have a different understanding of what the Original Sin means, however again the belief is basically the same. Through Adam and Eve’s Original Sin, sin was able to enter the world in the form of death and sinfulness. The Immaculate Conception merely means that the Blessed Theotokos was conceived without the Original Sin, so she did not have a sinful nature. I believe that you Orthodox believe that she was free of sin as well. Sinlessness of St. Mary
papal infallibility/supremacy
The Church has always believe that it can teach Infallibly, and that the Bishop of Rome had supremacy over the other Bishops. I would advise you read what Papal Infallibility is and isn’t. Papal Infallibility

That is what I was attempting on doing. Showing quotes that show the Bishop of Rome as the leader of the Church from pre 1054
