I am unable to remove the link I posted to Fr. Becks website (20 minute limit). A quick google search on his name yielded very questionable ideas. He may or may not accurately represent the Church’s position correctly on this issue, but on others he seemingly does not.

I see what you mean. It appears that Father Beck is in fact liberal on a few ideas-namely, allowing priests to marry and have families. At least, that is what I took from his ‘Is It Time For Vatican III?’ aticle. So, in that regard, I may have jumped the gun a bit.
I think, though, that O’Reilly and Goldman were equally bad or perhaps worse when giving their opinion on Christianity, and Catholics in particular.

It’s also the (only?) branch of the military that does not allow women in due to the grueling physical prowess required of them. Fascinating. Gone are the days of marching tanks in European cities in warfare. Elite, small, task forces are far more effective these days…
It’s not so much that it is the only branch that does not allow women … etc … it also excludes about 90% of the men who apply. Basically you have got to run the Boston Marathon while carrying a telephone pole and then when you finish that, you have got to win a firefight, and then swim home another 26 miles underwater in hypothermic water conditions to a submerged submarine and then do it again the next day.

The ONLY issue is performance. Your gender, your race, your religion, your hair color, who your daddy is … none of that matters. Start running barefoot over a shale beach … and if you get tired or hurt, you are out. If you can’t run at top speed for 48 hours while carrying a 120 pound backpack after skydiving from 40,000 feet, then you are out.

I’m not postulating anything, but if you think those SEALs were blubbering emotional wrecks over what they did (accomplished), you don’t know any SEALs. I know 2 and 1 Ranger, they don’t blubber that much over enemy deaths.
I was a Hospital Corpsman stationed at NAS Coronado in support of the Navy’s Basic Underwater Demolition School. I am fully aware of what the SEALs are capable of. Just because they don’t “blubber” over the death of an enemy, that doesn’t mean they relish the idea of killing anyone either.

There’s not a single aircraft carrier in the US fleet that has a DNA lab on board. Three days is amount of time I’ve found once a sample selected for testing it does not include backlog. Backlog can be months if not years.
They had quite some time to prep for the mission.
I would be surprised if they did not have some kind of DNA lab set up in advance of the operation just for the purpose.

I’m not sure if you are aware or not, but do you know if he obeys the current discipline?

It’s one thing to hold an opinion that priests should be able to marry and have families while still being obedient to whatever the Pope dictates. It’s quite another to have that opinion and disobey the Pope.

Just curious.

The washout rate is usually 60%-90% per class and you have to meet several criteria to even be able to apply. Training is both physical and mental with most of the intelligence exams given under high duress (oral exam while suffering from hypothermia, written exam after three or four days of sleep deprivation). Their training is brutal and designed to prepare them for anything they may see in the field. While “water boarding” is now banned due to cruelty for US prisoners, these men have volunteered to experience it.

I agreed with Father Edward Beck, that celebrating the death of Bin Laden like it was a Super Bowl win was awkward and no better than those who celebrated the demise of the US on 9/11. I liked the fact that Rudy Juiliana went to church to pray instead, and that GW Bush has declined Mr. Obama’s invitation to celebrate at the 9/11 site.

with all due respect Sam, I really don’t like your tactics. You say many things on these forums without sourcing at all. I give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are sincere in your beliefs. You are free to dismiss my posts as blather or whatever you like. I’m really not affected by your opinion. I read probably dozens of news stories daily on a variety of subjects. When I find one that particularly interests me I try and read as much as I can about it. I don’t keep a dossier of the stories or make a list in case you or others want to take me to task. I just happened on this story as I made my daily rounds about the inter-tubes. To be honest, I haven’t really read it all and may not read it very closely. Depends on how much work I have in front of me today. If it illucidates the subject for you great! If it’s mush, in your opinion, fair enough.

NB we are hearing a strong body of opinion here that this is a fake. Conspiracy theories abound on this whole issue as about the reality of 9/11.

Latasha,
First, welcome to CAF. These are great forums; and I love your 1st post. I feel the same way.

Peace,
Anna

Ask a simple question and you get lecture on a person’s likes and dislikes. I like to think of myself as well informed (correct or not), when someone makes a claim that doesn’t seem logical to me I simply ask for a source on those claims. I don’t claim they are wrong I ask where did this information come from before expressing an opinion. If it’s trustworthy then I have learned something without embarrassing myself by instantly making an uninformed statement. I learned long ago that many “facts” put forth on forums fail under scrutiny. Much the same way you must have agreed that the chances of an aircraft carrier keeping the equipment and personel to process DNA samples (to what end?) are very remote. In fact in 2007 a raid was conducted by US and British special forces in Somalia to collect DNA samples from terrorist killed months earlier that were sent to an unidentified US carrier where they were sent to CIA labs in Langley.

While the mobile DNA lab is news to me and would explain how a DNA test is possible onboard an aircraft carrier I still have to question how quickly one could be processed (even your link gets vague in that aspect). The other is the fact that this raid was decided on in a 16 hour time frame - would a non essential piece of equipment be transported across several time zones and delivered to a carrier deck, set up and produce a DNA sample in 28 hours total?

I do note that your link mentions the PCR process which is associated with the “old style” DNA processing and does take a certain amount of time (varying) to cycle though its processes and is not considered overly fast. The new sequencing machines don’t use the PCR process and can produce a DNA “match” in 2 to 3 hours.

Scott_Lafrance,
I love the photo in your signature. My son has always been a huge fan of Calvin and Hobbes. I don’t think you can ever outgrow them. 😉

In reading the New Testament, the only comment about soldiers is that they should not extort money or abuse their authority AND ESPECIALLY, not complain about their pay.

And that’s it.

IN FACT, one of Jesus’ biggest boosters was the CENTURION … “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my servant shall be healed.”

When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, “I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.”

Matthew 8:8-10

Jesus did not astonish easily, but a Centurion managed to do just that!

And that is about as good an endorsement as you are going to find.
