I THINK THE GGs & SAGs ARE BETTER & A TAD LESS POLITICAL. THE OSCARS IS ABOUT POLITICAL AGENDAS. WHAT ARE THE STANDARDS? THERE ARE SEVERAL 4 OR 5 STAR FILMS THIS WINTER. MY RECOMMENDATION, THE ONE WITH A REAL STORY & THEME & MAGNIFICENT ACTING IS THE READER. I’M PULLING FOR KATE WINSLETT.

I loved “Doubt” , which I saw last night. It concerns a 12 year old altar boy in 1964, who happens to be black, attending a white Bronx grammar school.

Of course, in 1964 I was a 12 year old black altar boy attending a white Bronx-area grammar school, so I could identify. I never got picked on much, however, plus other differences with the kid in the movie, like I had Sisters of Charity in high school, not in grammar school. But the movie was very accurate as to power and authority issues in Catholic parishes.

I think power and authority have always been (and still are) issues in Catholic parishes - possibly more between nuns/laity and priests than within the priesthood. 🤷

The thing that fascinates me is the level of self congradulation, self importance, self promotion involved.

The burning need for attention and affirmation seem less than healthy.

So I simply don’t bother watching. I seriously could not care less.

Years ago, the great Gloria Swanson “I’m ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille”] said that there were too many awards, that it was time to impose ‘A statuette of limitations’.

No one listened, of course, and now we have twice as many…

The only thing that could save this year’s Oscars from being totally terrible is if Dark Knight sweeps all 8 categories it is up for. 🙂

As for all those other movies,

Not that I have a strong opinion on the matter. 😉
Agreed!

I never watch award shows and am not going to this year. I’ve seen Sean Penn is several movies and he is either: meh or repulsive. I guess it’s just me, since there are a number of Great Actors whom I just don’t get. James Dean is one, Marlon Brando is another.

It’s not just you. I agree. I guess we’ll never be professional film critics. :o

Happy feet…? xD

I have some definite picks, heath ledger, of course, for supporting actor, and I think hellboy will get the best makeup.

Have you seen I am Sam or milk? he’s fantastic in both.

Umm…how?
there are a lot of references to sex and suggestive music that I didn’t feel was needed for a kids movie. They were actually playing boyz2men in the background singing “I’ll make love to you”, that’s the line you hear the loudest! I just thought it was going to be a cute movie, that talks about how people are different and that it’s okay to be different from everyone else. But it got a too suggestive a few times, I just felt it wasn’t needed. It’s a kids movie, leave that out of it.

Ok, that’s understandable. I thought you might of been referring to the whole “fox: it goes against proper values” thing
😊

🙂

I’m with you on that. I was very shocked at how suggestive it was in parts.

Hear the perspective of one priest and two parishioners about “Doubt”. Fr. Thomas J. Loya is a Byzantine Catholic priest with a weekly radio program looking at various topics in the context of John Paul II’s “Theology Of The Body”. December 30, 2008 he, along with parishioners Katie Gulas and Katie Reidy, discuss at length the film “Doubt”. The program begins with a lengthy discussion of the film. They then move into considering the issues in the film within the sacramental-liturgical world view of the Theology Of The Body. Fr. Tom, Katie and Katie were very impressed with the film, with the development of the characters and the quality of the acting, and recommend it. The program is archived (12/30/08) at: catholicradiointernational.com/abodyoftruth.php

Sean Penn was good in the Catholic-based Dead Man Walking.

Sure, the film isn’t about abortion, but it still stands up for the dignity of life from conception to natural death.

Most children’s movies nowadays are like that. There were many subtle inappropriate things I found in “Madagascar 2”. The “children’s movies” of today are not suitable even for adults with its heavy propaganda.

I know many young adults who enjoy such movies, like “Shrek”. I, for one, dislike them greatly. Do not take your children to see recently made animated features.

Not all recent animated features are like the ones you described.

For example, Bolt and Meet the Robinsons are good for everyone (Bolt has some TV style action violence thus the PG rating).
