Hi everyone

I was at the evening Mass at my parish tonight. It’s a nice Mass, although probably not to everyone’s taste - the music and hymns are more modern chosen than at the other Masses and the music group perform. It’s all done very professionally and respectfully. I like it

Anyway - I noticed that the priest (not for the first time) chose to use a ‘non standard’ Eucharistic prayer.

I was wondering if this is allowed - if so where would anyone else be able to find the text. He certainly used a book, it wasn’t a prayer he’d just made up. If these are allowed - who approves them?

Thanks

Vince,

You are going to have to give a little more information. By “non-standard” do you mean unfamiliar to you? There is an appropriate variety of authorized canons.

I guess so yeah, “unfamiliar to me” covers it. I didn’t realise there were any other approved canons, apart from one I saw once for a children’s liturgy.

I can’t remember many of the specific phrases in tonight’s but the priest who uses it also changes some of the texts for other prayers, like dropping the ‘us men’ part from the creed.

Thanks for the swift reply though!

There are four Eucharistic prayers that are considered “normal” but, in addition to these, there are Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children, for Reconcilliation, and for other purposes. All told, I think there are about 15 different *approved *Eucharistic prayers, although no all may be used in the United States.
