I agree %100 with CW Betts. I too am distressed by all of the Non-Catholics who use the board as a platform to preach Catholics away from their faith.

Is not the real purpose of this board to enable dialogue between Catholics and non-Catholics, and not just to be a proselityzing platform.

I think some of the LDS and Evangelicals are the very worst in this regard, they have to intention of dialog, just converting us.😦

And I think it is very sad for the same people who come here to prosilityse us to ban our presence on thier own boards.

“What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.”🙂
Much of what you have posted here, is true. If all of us were to look at the 'doctrines/beliefs/etc. that are carried out by all ‘Christian’ religions/faiths, we see that basically every one of them, have put their own ‘stamp’ on Christianity.

I have visted many churches of different ‘Christian’ faiths, and have run into a very major stumbling block. Many of the churches will not allow you to be baptized, unless you become ‘one of them’. These churches have put a ‘parameter’ of their own on ‘who is worthy of baptism’, where Christ allowed baptism to anyone that repented, and started a new life based upon His teachings and belief upon Him, that He is in fact the Son of God, and is our saviour (our only road to forgiveness and salvation). 🙂

The other day, having been frustrated with Fundamentalists posting on CAF, attempting to draw Catholics away from the Church, I decided to join a Fundametalist board, with no other goal than to address misconceptions thay may hold about Holy Mother Church. To my dismay, I was refused membership in their forums! Why? I don’t know. They won’t tell me. All I have to say is this. If your faith is such that that you cannot allow dissenting voices to be heard, it spekas loudly. It tells people that your faith is on shaky ground, verily, it is “a house built on sand”! I’m not expecting this thread to go anywhere, and I am not really expecting much in the way of comment. I Just needed to get it off of my chest.
I hear your frustration and I think you have a good understanding of such fora. They do not exist to hear other points of view but to “preach to the choir.” And, of course, if they venture out into other places, they feel compelled to lift the “veil of darkness” that blinds all of us who don’t agree with them.😃

I am grateful that CAF exists with its openness to those of us who are not Catholic. This is one of only two fora that I participate in – the other being Lutheran – and I appreciate the opportunity to engage in respectful dialogue with my Catholic brothers and sisters.

Coming here with a “singleminded agenda” is against the rules. Also, disprespecting the faith of the Catholics who post here is against the rules.

All of the non-Catholics who repeatedly post only to prove the CC wrong (looking to pull people away from the CC, not necessarily toward anything else, since many of this type are atheists) and who are disprespectful or our faith are risking their membership.

I think they have no idea just how tolerant Catholics are. They call us exclusionary and “closed”, yet Catholic forums are more tolerant of dissenting opions than any Protestant, and certainly any fundamentalist forum I’ve ever visited. Having a dissenting opinion isn’t against the forum rules here as it is on most of the Protestant forums I’ve visited.

If we Catholics reported every post that violated the rules here, I wonder how many non-Catholics would be left? We not only tolerate dissenting opinion, we tolerate most of the behavior that breaks the forum rules!!

I see that you are “frustrated with Fundamentalists posting on CAF, attempting to draw Catholics away from the Church.” But then you are dismayed about other forums in which people also have frustrations with those like you who come online attempting to draw people away from what they believe. Do you want dissenting voices to be heard or don’t you? Does a forum have to allow dissenting voices? I don’t think it does.
I think I see your point, Bookworm88, but I think that if a forum is going to have a no-dissenting-voices policy, they really ought to make that clear on their homepage.
It is certainly nice when there is a section, at least, where the dissenting voices can be expressed, but it is usually just one section for that. That way the dissenters do not disrupt the conversations of the people who want to get into nitpicky theological discussions strictly within their own faith tradition. I mean, even CAF does it that way.
I don’t think that’s exactly correct. For example, what about the Eastern Catholicism sub-forum? A lot of Orthodox Christians post there (I think. I haven’t been there in quite a while.)

P.S. Bookworm88, this is a little tangental to this thread, but I found a post from a moderator, explaining the policy for CAF’s Eastern Catholicism forum.
I’m rapidly coming to the conclusion that this entire thread ought to be moved to a different forum, such as “Non-Catholic Religions”.

Usually they do, but if their focus is a “fellowship of like minds” context, they would not appreciate someone bringing a theological disagreement to those general discussion threads.
The fundamentalist forum at which I am a member makes this statement: We are a site for fundamentalists. If you do not consider yourself a biblical, Christian, fundamentalist, then this site is not for you. Curtis Lee Laws coined the term “fundamentalist” in 1920 when he said, “We suggest that those who still cling to the great fundamentals and who mean to do battle royal for the fundamentals shall be called 'Fundamentalists’.” Others are definitely welcome to observe, but we desire that our active members be self-identified fundamentalists.
There is nothing wrong with having a forum dedicated to serving a particular group of people.
Yes. But the issue (for me) is if a Fundamentalist forum has such a policy but doesn’t state it openly.

I think it would be best not to guess at intent, or at least not to suspect negative motivations for intent.

You were denied access to a private forum for reasons unstated to you.

Just accept it.

It is possible that the forum you were looking to join does not have as its intent an open forum for any and all views to be discussed. That may not be necessarily be a bad thing. When people are baby Christians they need support and a safe environment where they can gain strength. That cannot happen when a person is besieged by varying view points that may be in conflict with whatever ecclesial community where they have come to knowledge of Christ. These things take time. Everyone’s faith walk is a journey and that journey will unfold as it will. It’s not our job to force people to view Christ and His Church they way we want them to. Our job is to love all and edify the Body of Christ in all we do.

Please set aside your disappointment and just accept what is. Be watchful for other opportunities as they present themselves. If your calling is to evangelize, God will open those doors for you.

I’m sure I have said this before, but my intent was only to address the many mamy misconceptipns others have about Catholics. Clearing misconceprions done in the spirit of ecumenism should be a threat to no ones faith. If you cannot stand to hear what another believes, then that should raise some red flags.

I wasn’t questioning your intent. I am sure your intent is exactly what you’ve said. But you can’t change other people. You can only change yourself.

You were once a new Catholic. When you were could you have stood to hear a very well bible versed non-Catholic Christian take apart Catholic Theology by use of Scripture and logic? Would it have raised red flags to have the people in your life protect you from such confusion?

If you attempt to see things from a different perspective, from the others point of view, it may help in dispelling your own negativity towards the situation. It might give you insight into how to approach the situation differently in order to introduce the conflict you desire to introduce.

Throwing rocks at the bus won’t stop the bus, but it might hurt someone riding on the bus.

I think further explanation is in order. I converted from fundamentalism. I even attended a fundamentalist Bible College for a year. The lies proprgated about Catholicism should not be tolerated. I would be happy if I could just get them to accept that CAtholics are indeed Chrostians.

This is excellent. You came from an Anti-Catholic environment and are now Catholic. How did that happen? What impacted you to convert? Was it well discussed and reasoned theological principals? Or was it something else? Was it thought provoking argument? Or was it the love of a single person directed towards you? Did it happen all at once or was it a slower process of prayerful discernment?

I think it’s great you are looking at your calling as an evangelic Catholic. I wish you much success!

I’m sorry, but I don’t agree with the idea that we should always “just accept” whatever the moderators of a forum decide. Certainly we should endeavor to be fair and charitable in our assessment; but at the same time we should be in such awe of moderators as to elevate them to superhuman do-no-wrong status.

In this particular case, I think the big question is whether the forum in question is being open and honest about it’s banning procedures. As I see it, CWBetts was banned (denied membership) based solely on what he put in his application – presumably the fact that he’s Catholic. That’s fine if the people who participate on the forum are aware of that policy (i.e. if the front page says “This forum is only for Protestants and people intent on becoming Protestant. Anyone else will be automatically denied membership.”)

Come on now … I certainly don’t advocate elevating anyone to superhuman anything.

So what exactly do you think CWB should do about it?

Hello CWBetts,

I visited one Protestant forum where the Protestants said the most hateful things, towards me, all Catholics, Mary, the Eucharist, and anything else they thought would rile or hurt. When I contacted their moderators, and administrator, and said it appeared that their rules were not be adhered too, or moderated, I was told that they, their posters and themselves, do not consider Catholics as Christian. One moderator called Catholics a satanic cult.

They have their forum divided up into different faiths and by their own admission, Roman Catholicism is the most active forum they have, so active, they had to add a second Roman Catholicism forum. There were a minimal of people who reached out and rebuked the others for the way they witnessed themselves. After my communication with the moderators and administrator, I left and haven’t been back. I was shocked at the ignorance displayed there.

A few months ago, I was invited to another forum, where I am the only Catholic. It is mostly Pentecostal Church of God pastors. I’ve been posting there on a somewhat regular basis. It was my intention, as I explained to them, to show that many beliefs about Catholics was misconceptions and that Catholics are Christians.

Witnessing them calling each other heretics, over disagreements in doctrines of their Church, I was prompted to ask them how they could call each other heretics when their Church was a split from a Baptist Church. In the discussion, I brought up the Catholic Church having documentation of doctrines throughout it’s 2000 year old history. Of course, the discussions turned to the Catholic Church. I defended as I could and ended up being accused of having an agenda of promoting Catholic superiorty and using questions about their Church history to do it. The administrator wrote me an email. I apologized and told him it wasn’t a scam, it was an well intention to stop them from calling each other heretics that backfired on me. I also said, I have no problems with any Christian Church that inroduces Christ to people, but I have my views of the correct Church for me personally.

The administrator made it public by posting a thread of why he rebuked me. Surprisingly, about 25% of their regulars came to my defense and stated I was more respectful than alot of their regular posters and should not be held back from expressing my views.

It was private messages from some that kept me going. There’s an Episcopal priest there that really cheers me on. Another bishop of the Church of God confided in me that he was converting to Orthodox and asked that I not expose that to the others. A few others asked questions through private messages and said they were surprised to see an explanation and could understand how that specific teaching had come from scriptures, even though not all of them agreed with the interpretation.

I was invited into a debate, by one pastor, about the Nature of the Eucharist. That debate is currently going on and getting near the end of the agreed format. Another pastor has entered into a discussion of sola scriptura and private interpretation with me, because I said I thought it was a made man doctrine. I have presented my first proper argument and am waiting on his response. Since I posted my first proper argument, several other scriptural passages have come up and I feel I’m loaded for whatever he produces. While it’s taking him time to respond with his first proper argument, he is being charitable in the discussion and the boundaries we agreed too to begin.

Before those discussions, I had another pastor tell me, he would provide a point by point, scriptural argument for sola scriptura. I started the discussion with him, but he continually changed the subject with the usual objections, you guys pray to and worship Mary and the saints, you guys believe Jesus is in bread and wine, you guys worship statues, etc. etc. When I explained, I believe those were misconceptions and provided some scriptural support for the beliefs he brought up, I always asked that we start another thread to fully discuss those objections and asked could we please stay on topic. Finally, infuriated, he presented a list of about 50 misconceptions (copied and pasted from an anti-Catholic website I suspect) and demanded I respond to them all. I told him, it seemed to be an attempt to hijack the topic of the thread with a smokescreen to avoid the point by point, scriptural argument he had promised to provide. This just infuriated him more and he said somethings that actually got him suspended for a while. The whole “trainwreck” proved to work favorablly for me, as I received positive messages for my demeanor and messages.

Because of those experiences, I am posting more on CAF and demanding the same respect of Protestants here, that is required of me in that situation. Even though I was pubically rebuked, I have not been suspended or banned, and I’ve received a support of about 25% of their regulars to let me post my views with no boundaries to prevent me from expressing my view. This is why I know one can question another without the disrespect, condescending tones and turning on the opposing poster personally.

The positives on that forum are the private and sometimes public messages thanking me for the explanation and the demeanor I maintain in the face of adversity. More than a few have said they believe Catholics are Christians, which in itself is what I am out to accomplish there. It’s my small way of trying to bring about unification.

Joh 13:35 By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another.

I just tried to join a fundamentalist forum and was rejected membership. It said, “You did not fit the requirements for membership at these forums. Sorry.” I’m trying again to join.

Was this at the Fighting Fundamentalist froums?

I can’t do it. You can’t leave the Denomination field blank. And I can’t lie. I wont deny Christ.

When I registered the second time, I put “Catholic” again. I assume I will be rejected. So next time, I’ll just put “Christian”. After all, Catholic=Christian.
