I might have got this wrong - so someone from the UK jump in and correct me - but I was asking about this here and it seems catholic schools get funded up to 80 percent by the local education authority, with the shortfall being made up from parents contributions. But its not a compulsory charge if you cant afford to pay - not sure how that works … is that the same kind of idea?

That sounds similar to the agreement here. The Catholic Schools in Ontario are operated under an agreement between the Province and the Catholic School Boards, I believe. The agreement itself governs the relationship. The CSB is funded, at least in part, by the Province - and there are a lot of Catholic schools in Ontario. It would be difficult to imagine them surviving and expanding as they have without public support of some kind.

Can’t really say I know anything of how school boards are run in the U.K…
Here in Canada I’ve NEVER seen any Catholic parochial school funded 80% by provincial government coffers. Such a parochial school would cease to become exclusively Catholic with a provincial government holding those kind of purse strings. With these kind of monetary odds the provincial government would also hold the deciding vote on how curriculum affairs in such a school are run including “Explicit Sex Ed Curriculum”.
Not in any Catholic parochial school in Canada. In most dioceses in Canada Catholic parochial schools are increasingly becoming none existent
