I recently read a post on the “Ask an Apologist” forum that said Ouija boards are sinful, but a “magic 8 ball” is just a toy, if not used with the actual intent of divining the future. I think I used a Ouija board once when I was about 12. It struck me as being just as clearly fake as the magic 8 ball - basically a cardboard thing you can buy at Toys R Us and bring out at slumber parties, and everyone pretends the planchette (or whatever you call it) is really moving on its own, when you’re really using your hands to move it. I don’t get the moral difference between that and the magic 8 ball. Thoughts, anyone?
 
People have been possessed by spirits they’ve made contact with through O. boards. Ask any priest who has performed exorcisms and he’ll tell you to steer clear of those things. I don’t think there’s any spiritual component to the magic 8 balls-- just random answers that pop up. With those, you’re not trying to get spirits to come and move your hands to tell you things…
 
I’m no expert on Ouija boards… never touched one… but here are some things to think about.

First, while you clearly saw it as a useless instrument, there are others (many) who don’t see that clearly. They are willing to experiment with it and that opens them up to be influenced by forces they don’t want to be dealing with.

Second, the 8-ball has a series of “pre-loaded” messages, and because of that it can often “give an answer” that has nothing to do with the question, thus to most people the answer is useless as often as it “might” apply. This makes most people dismiss it readily as nothing but a toy. If you didn’t, and you were relying on it (somehow) to divine the future or something like that, you would be in the realm of sin.

With a Ouija board, the entire premise of it is said to work by some nebulous “energy” and it has no preloaded messages. Anything produced by way of an “answer” is often seen as caused by something outside the person or persons with their finger on the pointer thing. We are not supposed to engage in that kind of activity, period, because it leads (or can) to people giving credibility to some supernatural force, and the tendency is to try and use or harness that force for personal gain, insight, knowledge, or direction. The Church has clearly stated this is wrong; see the CCC articles 2115-2117.

It isn’t so much the device, it’s what the person does with the device that makes the difference. With a Ouija board, it really has no other purpose than to draw on some unspecified occult power to divine answers, so it has no other purpose than something sinful.
 
As I recall the movie “The Exorcist” was based on a true story, though it probably wandered far from it. In the actual case the possessed was a young boy who became possessed while using an Ouija board.

A local priest, who is pretty level headed, told of three or four terrified teenagers coming to him one night. They had been experimenting with the board and had really stirred something up. I don’t remember the details; just his opinion that one should have nothing to do with it.
 
I heard of a young priest, who, when he was a teen, went to a party somewhere. For some reason, as they got the Ouija board out, he remembered he’d left his brown scapula in the car and went to get it. When he came back in, the Ouija board froze up (stopped “talking”). When they asked why it quit talking, it spelled out, “I s-m-e-l-l G-o-d” He left immediately!
 
Does Parker Brothers manufacture any other toys that might be demonic? (Yes, I’m calling the ones manufactured by a toy company a “toy.”)

The truly demonic ouija boards are the ones that AREN’T manufactured by Parker Brothers.
During the late 1800s, planchettes were widely sold as a novelty. The businessmen Elijah Bond and Charles Kennard had the idea to patent a planchette sold with a board on which the alphabet was printed. The patentees filed on May 28, 1890 for patent protection and thus had invented the first Ouija board. Issue date on the patent was February 10, 1891. They received U.S. Patent 446,054. Bond was an attorney and was an inventor of other objects in addition to this device. An employee of Kennard, William Fuld took over the talking board production and in 1901, he started production of his own boards under the name “Ouija”.[9] The Fuld name would become synonymous with the Ouija board, as Fuld reinvented its history, claiming that he himself had invented it. The strange talk about the boards from Fuld’s competitors flooded the market and all these boards enjoyed a heyday from the 1920s through the 1960s. Fuld sued many companies over the “Ouija” name and concept right up until his death in 1927. In 1966, Fuld’s estate sold the entire business to Parker Brothers, who continues to hold all trademarks and patents. About ten brands of talking boards are sold today under various names.[9]*

I think the difference might be that with a Ouija board, you are trying to contact the dead, and that is playground for the devil and his tricks. The magic 8 ball, is similar to flipping a coin and its heads or tails. There are predetermined outcomes to shaking a magic 8 ball, same as a coin. You’re not trying to contact a spirit or whatnot.
 
The Ouija board is definitely a source of evil, I can attest to that. I won’t get into all the details as to how I know, just take my word for it (that story is in another post) but it’s something not to be messed with. The 8 ball is just like everyone else has said, a toy. I hope this and all the other posts have answered your questions.

I have a question, it kind of fits with the topic so I didn’t want to start a whole new thread…

Can ouija boards predict the future? A bunch of girls I know used a ouija board one night and they asked it when they would die. It “told” one of the girls that she would die before graduation. A few months later she died in a collision. One of the other girls was also told that she would die before graduation, and she actually believes it. She has a kind of attitude now that is like “who cares what I do? I’m dead soon anyway”.

So, my question is: Did the “spirits” or “demons” actually know that the girl would die? Or did it make a lucky guess, hoping that they would develop the attitude that my friend has?

Here is my lucky guess: there was no spirit or demon and they subconsciously moved the piece. Penn and Teller did a show on ouija boards and they put blind folds on the experienced people using them. Then they sat them in front of a ouija board but turned the board around while they weren’t looking. Well the board had a “yes” and “no” area, and instead of actually going to those areas, they went to the other side of the board where the yes and no areas would have been if the board wasn’t flipped around. You can watch it on youtube. I don’t believe in ouija boards at all. It is the collective subconscious of the people that move it…or was the demon blindfolded as well?

And if a demon could contact humans through a ouija board, why not through a tv, or a candle, or any object?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think the danger in ouija boards is in the actual board… I think it is in the “summoning” of spirits/demons.

If demons are just around ready to be summoned why don’t they haunt people? Why don’t I see these demons or evidence of them constantly?

Have people use a ouija board while looking at it and see what it says…then blindfold everyone and have them use it and see what it says. I guarentee that when people are blindfolded nothing would get spelled out at all…because its not real and demons don’t communicate through toys.
 
We were all fooling about with a DIY wine glass and alphabet version of a ouija board years ago. Someone asked, “How do we get plenty of money?”
The answer came: S-A-V-E.
Hardly demonic! 😃

Satan is the father of lies, and desires nothing more than your spiritual death. He hates you and nothing makes him happier than to hear that you think that demons don’t exist.

May the Precious Blood of Jesus cover all of us and protect us. Saint Michael, protect us. And may our Lady cover us all in her protective mantle.

Demons certainly exist and they do “haunt” people. I have personally experienced a physical demonic attack.

It happened earlier this year. I got hit in the back of the head while I was praying. I closed my eyes at the very end of my prayers and I felt a pop in the back of my head. At the same time I saw an incredibly vivid pornographic image and my head continued to buzz for about a minute afterward.

It was definitely the strangest thing I’ve ever experienced. I took it to my priest and he agreed it was most likely demonic in origin. This kind of thing is more common than many think although it usually isn’t that apparent.

Was it people you recognized in the image? That is pretty crazy.
