I have to say it has been an interesting week. My husband doesn’t understand that whenever we are ready to pray or have a meal someone from the mormon church stops in.

We are kind people but I can tell it is getting on my husbands nerves a bit. We have been invited to attend the mormon church several times, have about 3 books of mormon and have had missionaries.

The sad part about it is my little girls don’t understand why so many of us want to change churches. For thier sake only we only have had them meet children from the Catholic Parish we attend. not because we don’t like Mormons but because 3 or 4 little girls have already tried to invite our children to various activies and have shown 2 mormon videos to my oldest. They come home crying all confused.

I’m sorry if this hurts people who are mormons but I don’t see truth in your religion. my husband and I may only be her 6 months to a year so we are trying the best we can

Be careful and make sure you really catechize your kids and live that faith that I am sure you do.
Our very good friends are LDS and have just moved back into town, I look forward to good healthy conversations…maybe it will not come up.
This I do know. You must first and foremost teach your kids the truth…they are teaching theirs what they believe. And those kids will evangelize.
They are very good people, and make great desserts 😉 carrot in green jello, anyone. I have had lots of experience with them years ago when I dated a mormon boy for 5 years. I just knew nothing about religion at the time.

Soo, I would take the opportunity you will be given to evangelize to them. Show them with charity that there are Catholics that know their faith and believe in it.

I just started another thread because I plan to have some of the missionaries over.
Don’t be nervous or intimitaded, let’s pray to the Holy Spirit, and He will guide us in everything, yes?!!!

Be careful. Mormons respect the Church’s historical authority, and will refer to it *at first *respectfully. Eventually, however, if you don’t convert, they can get mean and clannish. I knew someone who tried to establish a private business in a small Mormon town in Utah. Once they learned he was Catholic, they boycotted his business. He was forced to sell out and leave.

It might help to know your children’s ages.

I was raised Mormon and can tell you personally that we are taught to be missionaries from a very early age. If your children are, say 8 or 9, then it shouldn’t be too much of an issue (assuming you’ve catechized them properly). However if your children are younger (like 5 or 6), I’d recommend having them either not play with children of zealous families, OR insist that they play at your house to ensure that no literature or film is brought to them in part by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Inc.

I would have a face to face with the parents. Establish very firmly that such behavior must stop. It is an underhanded trick and undermines your parental authority to go around you directly to your children. I have heard similar anecdotes about their behavior. That is cult-like behavior. Certainly watch very closely.

Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is the scripture passage that will alway (always) confound them, throw them out of focus and overall stop them in their tracks.

It is because this is the “litmus test”, in a manner of speaking. It helps us discern if someone is speaking with the Spirit of God or the spirit of antichrist.

Be aware that its not enough to agree as in “of course He did”. or “Yeah, we believe that too”.

There is nothing “innocent” or “harmless” about a mormon determined to convert you.

If this is getting on your husband’s nerves and the children are starting to become upset - then this is more than just a passing inconvenience.

Do the basic catholic things really well: Pray the rosary, daily. Go to confession & communion, weekly. If you eat in public, pray before the meal and make the Sign of the Cross. Use holy water in your home. Place a crucifix on your entrance doors, front door, back door and garage doors if you have them. Have your sacramentals on you and have them blessed by a priest.

Sounds drastic huh?
The other extreme would be to do nothing and the middle ground would be, to be naive. Hope this helps.

Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum.

acatholic4ever,
I have friends who converted to the Mormon religion.

As you turn down request to attend Mormon services and such, they will stop proselytizing, but they will also stop associating with you.

We lost our friends when they converted and we never see them anymore. They stopped responding to emails and phone calls, whenever we’ve reached out to them.

I can only imagine what it would be like living in a Mormon community.

Jim

with all respect, you should isolate your children from them by sending them to live with your parents for that time peroid.

My children are young 7(Emily), 5 (Mary) , 2(Hannah) and 4 months (emma) My children go to a Catholic school. I was told by someone that the mormon children in her area would wait outside of the Catholic school to hand out Mormon items to the children! I have not seen that yet.

I get a lot of comments that I picked a GOOD name for my little one. Emma I guess thier 1st prophet Josephs wife was named that. I tell them I named Mary after the mother of God. They don’t like that!

We just can’t win here!

Now that’s a shame. Assuming those LDS children don’t physically come onto the Catholic school property, they are within their rights to free speech, SO I say fight fire with fire:
  • Give your children some of those cheap plastic rosaries to give to the Mormon children in reciprocity.
  • Give them some copies of a 4-week psalter, etc.
You don’t want to come off as uncharitable or down right “mean” by causing a confrontation both for your own sake, and as to not fuel the “Mormon persecution complex” (yes, even in a state where Mormons comprise some 65% of the population, they scream persecution if you don’t step on eggshells in order to not offend).

Seriously, the best way to ward off the Mormons is to do EXACTLY THE SAME THINGS THEY ARE DOING!!!

Bake some of your neighbors some cookies and leave some Catholic literature inside.

Whatever you decide on doing, just make it very clear (in a polite way) that you AND YOUR FAMILY are very content with your own religion and for the sake of “good-neighborliness” (is that a word?) to please avoid religion at all cost.

Most sensible people (Mormon or not) will respond well to this, only the zealots will fight it, in which case they are not deserving of your friendship.

Then, leave the rest to God.

Best of luck!
God Bless!

Yes Joseph’s first wife was Emma. Tell your children to ask the Mormon kids what the names of Joseph’s other 33 wives were! Seriously, if they insist on shining their own religion in the lime light while defaming yours, bring out the big guns.

Joseph Smith was a pervert who justified his sexual promiscuity by saying he received a “revelation” to reinstate polygamy.

If you know where to look, there are PLENTY of ugly blunders in the history of Mormonism, learn about them and wait to bring them up whenever the ugly zealots come for you. Some of mention are:
  1. Why Blacks were first allowed the priesthood under Joseph Smith, but then his successor created a ban against Blacks, which was not repudiated until 1978!
  2. Why Joseph Smith felt the need to marry 34 women!
  3. Why the Mormon Temple Endowment is nearly 100% copy-and-pasted from Freemason rites. (Mention that Joseph Smith was initiated into Freemasonry 3 weeks before receiving the “revelation” for the Mormon Endowment, coincidence? I think not.
My heart really goes out to you and your family. If you have any questions, or need any other “Mormon insider advise” please feel free to private message me.

Peace.

A rosary is a tool for prayer. Please don’t give rosaries to people who wouldn’t know what to do with them, other than commit sacrilege by using them as jewelry or toys, or with disrespect.

By psalter, do you mean a book of Psalms? I’d suggest that unless children read the Psalms with their parents, and have some knowledge about them, they don’t pass on anything that doesn’t have significant meaning to them.

Duly noted.

My feeling is talk to your young children and explain what to expect and to politely say “NO” when confronted with videos, pamplets or just plain mormon talk. Teach them to be strong Catholics and that it is okay to say, “I’m Catholic and not interested in your religion”.

I also think it’s a good idea to have the children play at your house because of your past experience with their playmates homes. These families can put a lot of doubt in your childrens minds and it could be harmful in the long run.

I don’t care what anyone says I truly believe that Mormon children are not as sweet as everyone makes them out to be.

The children come to our house and are just rude. I have told them time and time again that they need to stop or just stop coming over.

You shoukld hear what they are trying to tell my children!

I’m sorry I really don’t have any advice on how to help you, but I am praying for you and your family. Especially your children.

we are in the heart of Salt lake City. I’m sorry due to privacy I much rather not say the Catholic church we attend

The only way to stop this is to be blunt with them.

Don’t worry about hurting their feelings, just tell them plainly that you are a committed Catholic and that you are not interested in the Mormon faith.

If they keep trying to give you the Book of Mormon and other tracts, just rip them up in front of the Mormons. This may seem rude, but they need to get the message. Don’t worry about destroying the Book of Mormon because it is not a Holy Book; it is basically a fairy tale made up by the delusional Joseph Smith.

Don’t show them any respect if they continue to go against your wishes. Make sure they get the message loud and clear.
