"Rich Olszewski:
Yes, I had it with that bunch when I read their suggestion that the way to deal with the war in Iraq (back then) was to level Baghdad and its other cities with carpet bombing sparing no one. They were serious as they always are.
Which is why I dismissed your accusation. If you accuse people of wanting to carpet bomb a city, you should really provide a citation. Perhaps you hold yourself to a different standard?

Ishii
Thank ishii you for clarifying that post. I had no idea how/where that phrase came from.

Now you’re just being disengenuous.
Do you have my post with that language?

Hard to get citation to an article that’s over 10 years old. But, call me a liar if you like.

I’m very aware of the meaning and how it is generally used.

Frankly, I never thought I would hear one Catholic claim abortion was the hobbyhorse of another Catholic.

But, there’s always a first time.🤷
I find it a bit pejorative.

Would one say Jesus a hobbyhorse?

Ishii admits that it is more than a hobbyhorse, a topic to which one constantly reverts.

We are talking amongst one another. Nobody here said we wanted to carpet bomb Baghdad. Why bring it up? Why lump us in with those people?

You weren’t addressing me, but I believe that one can, and may, and perhaps ought to hold Jesus Christ as a subject to which one constantly reverts.

I certainly wasn’t lumping us with the Randians. If there were ever two groups who are diametrically opposed to one another, it is us and those atheists.

Describing another group. We can describe the evil intentions of our international enemies without saying that anyone on the Forum agrees with those malefactors or wants to do anything they want to do.

Hobbyhorse: a topic to which one constantly reverts. No belittling anti-abortion.
I wouldn’t say that abortion is a “fixation” for me. The sanctity of life is an issue that I hold dear - you will find that I didn’t “revert” back to the issue other than to respond to another poster who brought it up. If you say you didn’t intend to belittle my committment to the issue, I accept that.

It looks like you were responding in agreement to Bellesbane’s post about another poster being a disciple of Ayn Rand. So if anything, you were linking that poster with the carpet bombers.

Catholics SHOULD be diametrically opposed to Randism. Lamentably, we as a body are not. Quite a few of us seem to think we can embrace those bits of it that sound most like US political conservatism.

IMNAAHO, the Catholic faith has no more in common with Randism than it does with Nietszcheanism; and probably less.

That’s happened a lot this year.
I have no problem with people doing that during that primaries - support who you want. Come the general election between Romney and Obama, it will be a time for choosing. And make no mistake - even a moderate Republican is light years better than Obama.

Ishii

If 10% of the voters on the right do not vote for the Republican because they think he’s too wishy washy, then the effect of that is to help elect the Democrat who is light years worse than any wishy washy Republican
That is your opinion. I have no respect for the opinions of those who do not even recognize that their opinions are fact, and treat their opinions as a gospel greater than Church teaching on the matter. Furthermore, those that insult those with different opinions need to worry more about their own adherence to the Golden Rule than the manner in which other Catholics follow the teaching of the Church on faithful citizenship, as in.
There is no getting around this fact. You can spin it all you want, but refusing to oppose a great evil in a fit of misguided holier than thou-ism is the wrong way to go this election.
I have never, ever, once, held my opinion as better than others, so the “that thou” part is just slander. However, I do vote in accord to the moral principles and leave the results to God.

Oh please. Your comments are overwrought and exaggerated. Of course my comments are my opinion - I thought that was implicit, but thanks for pointing that out. If 10% of voters on the right don’t vote for the Republican because they think he’s wishy washy (they would never consider voting for the leftist Democrat) then their not voting for the GOP guy helps the Democrat get elected. Hopefully pretty easy to understand. I am not aware that the gospel actually speaks to this issue - so I don’t think its possible for for me to “treat my opinion as a gospel greater than Church teaching” - talk about slander, you should practice what you preach.

I tell it as I see it, pnewton. I would hate to see an anti-catholic leftist president help get re-elected because of misguided “true-believers”.

The recent exchanges on this thread have convinced me that I had best not give any indication of whom I will vote for, Dem, GOP, or 3rd partyist. 🙂

Ishii I think I understand where you are coming from and my only response is in the general election perhaps the decision will come down to voting for the lesser of the two statist.

BITE YOUR TONGUE!!!:(
We don’t comment on Canadian politics, please stay out of ours.
I think everyone in the world is willing to comment on U.S. politics, and we have still to see whether the President or Mr. Romney will take and keep the lead.
