Our pets will rise from the dead and testify against us

I can honestly say I have never heard this.

A friend of mine, a realatively new Christian - a Protestant, told me someone else was telling her that in the Bible it states that our dead pets will on the last day, rise up and testify against our sins in front of God. My friend then asked someone she thinks is rather wise in the Bible - he’s not, he’s actually a bit of a dangerous con artist, but that’s another story. He said it was in the Apocrypha. I skimmed through mine, and even Googled it but could find nothing even suggesting this.

Is this true?

Is this a misinterpretation of something else?

Has anyone else heard this, or know what this could be confused with?

She came to me because we’ve had some good conversations and she knows I’m Catholic, and while not Catholic herself, she’s starting to come to respect and understand Catholic tradition and teaching.
 
I would assume, and this is a broad assumption, that that person is talking about Genesis 9

Which is talking about even animals will be held responsible for lifeblood spilled. I assume they simply misinterpreted that verse to mean that animals will be giving an account of our lives? When it is saying that even the animal will be held responsible if he spills blood.

If they read the NIV it could be easily confused to mean what they said:
And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being.

I have, many times, by people who are into all that New Age stuff. :whackadoo:

The Catholic Catechism is silent on this sort of thing:hmmm:

And if anything like this were to come about, I think my pets would testify FOR me.😃

By the way, do you know the story of “The Rainbow Bridge”, where pets who have died await their guardians? Just GOOGLE it, it is all over the internet:compcoff:

There is in Judaism a belief that our pets will testify regarding how we treated them, either favorably or unfavorably. However, this is not Jewish dogma or doctrine.
 
My cat hates everybody. Boy am I in trouble.

Mostly I have been his faithful servant, but I guess I should have let him lick my tuna sandwich plate this afternoon. But I won’t let him lick the butter, in any event.

I think you are being conned, something cats do well.

I thought I remembered this as being a kind of Jewish folk tale…Certainly, it should give us pause, to realize that we will be judged by how we have treated all of God’s creatures.
I’ve never seen it in the Bible…

You’re right, Zooey, it’s not in the Bible. I think it is part of Jewish folklore. However, being kind to animals, not hunting them for sport, killing them for food only with the sharpest knife so as to inflict the least pain, and feeding our pets before ourselves: these ARE part of Jewish Law.

Dogs have masters, cats have staff.

A dog looks at its master and thinks…“this human feeds me, loves me, and cares for me. He must be God” :yup:

Yeah, I’ve heard that a lot, especially from an online rat community I was a member of for several years.
 
I can certainly see cats doing this, but dogs? I doubt it.
What about the dead fish that gets flushed down the toilet? Or the hampster that got loose and expired in a heating duct? ooh, I am getting the creeps.

actually the cat is more likely to testify against the dog.
 
I personally think animals are more aware of who God is than we are. Look at the Canticle of Daniel.
 
Actually, the Catechism makes it clear that animals don’t have souls. Only humans do. So it’s highly unlikely that animals would be resurrected just to turn against humanity. Animals were meant to be controlled by man according to his needs. Not that I want needless cruelty towards animals, though.

The catechism says animals don’t have immortal souls. It doesn’t say they don’t have a soul. They have a material soul.
