Recently Fr. Mitch Pacwa said something on this subject on his “Threshold of Hope” program on EWTN. He said he was speaking with an artist and his advice to the artist was to not express himself, but to express beauty.
I studied art and I paint from time to time. I think this is great advice along with Pope Benedict XVI’s statements to artists.
Recently I went to a Picasso exhibit. In my younger art student days, I thought he was the ultimate in art. Now I pick and choose among his works. I saw an Impressionists exhibit some months ago and found myself seeing more of beauty. It’s fascinating to me to see a painter glorify one of God’s creatures, like “The White Cat” by Bonnard, and to focus on God’s incredible created beauty like “Sunflowers” and “Cherry Blossoms”. Little things, fruits, birds…“heaven and earth are full of your glory…”
Perhaps we can’t know much of heaven, but we might pick up little hints of it in what God has scattered on the earth if we look. I think an artist has to focus on finding those pieces of heaven and trying to depict and bring them to the attention of the troubled world we live in. I’m going to cut and paste this article by our Holy Father, as he has brought charity and love to the artists’ attention.

I have diffiulty appreciating these works of art that are for the ‘mass’ public, and where public authorities (the mayor) paid big sums of money to have and expose them. An example of the top of my head:
