Outrage at the Kennedy funeral !

As a devout Roman Catholic, an admitted sinner and an individual trying my hardest to live by my Catholic precepts I was outraged at the Kennedy funeral. That he would be accorded a sumptuous Mass of Resurrection wilth all its’ magnifcent trappings, numerous priests and a Cardinal in attendance, with accolade after accolade being repeated by family and the celebrant of the Mass himself, including having his 11 year old grandson pimp the outrageous health care legislation, outraged me and many of my Catholic family and friends beyond belief! This man was personally responsible for millions of innocent infant deaths through abortion and embryonic stem cell research and promotion of homo sexual marriages by his years and years of campaigning and passing legislation to bring these heineous acts to fruiition. Not only that he sends a letter to the Holy Father read BY A PRIEST at the gravesite telling the Holy Father ALL THAT HE FOUGHT FOR AND ACCOMPLISHED IN HIS OFFICE but nowhere in the letter or any place else did he admit culpability in grievous sin or his sorrow and contrition for same. He was literally telling the Holy Father that he had earned Heaven and was reminding him of his so called legislative accomplishments. HE CONSEQUENTLY GOT A PAPAL BLESSING from the Holy Father! In all the accolades mouthed from the pulpit at the funeral was it not incumbent on the celebrant to have added: “Although Ted Kennedy brought to fruition many meaningful legislations the fact remains that he championed many causes in direct contradiction to Catholic teaching which were serious sins”! What has happened to the clergy in our country? Is the name Kennedy beyond reproach? Are huge contributions to Rome and the Boston diocese so important that criticism is beyond the pale with this family? All the Kennedy men since Jack who have been or are in office have championed abortion rights, homosexual rights, embryonic stem cell research and other anti Catholic causes. Something definitive has to be said by ALL CATHOLIC PRELATES IN THIS COUNTRY! It is no wonder that so many Catholics believe so many different things on major issues. THERE IS NO CONSISTENCY TO CHURCH DOCTRINE! This must change or our religion is in deep trouble worldwide! I have family and friends who do not agree as to what the Church teaches! Why do you think that is?
 
I agree that Ted Kennedy championed the rights of several anti-Catholic causes, namely abortion, ESCR, and same-sex unions. He should not be praised or lauded by others as being a ‘good Catholic politician’ due to his political beliefs and voting record.

That being said, neither you nor myself are the Lord God above, nor are either of us the Holy Father. Therefore, I don’t think that we have the right to be angry at his funeral mass, or that he received a Papal Blessing. The truth of the matter is that God wants all of His children to return to Him, even if it is with their last breath (granted, they would have significant time in Purgatory, but a return is a return). Thus, who is to say that facing his mortal end, Ted didn’t have an epiphany, followed by a sudden change of heart.

My grandfather was Baptist and my grandmother was Catholic. When my grandfather died, the funeral service was a Catholic mass. We don’t know what stands at the end of this journey and the beginning of the next. The argument is that salvation is ‘through the Catholic Church’. Well perhaps by allowing his children to be raised Catholic, that qualified him for salvation. It’s impossible to know, and I hope that you wouldn’t pray for the soul of Ted Kennedy because of how he lived his life. Hate the sin, not the sinner.

It’s significant that the Cardinal himself did NOT concelebrate. He was asked to and refused.

The funeral was NOT at the Cathedral. This, too, was refused.

Or did you know these things?

Remember that a funeral mass is NOT an award, or seal of approval of how a person lived his life, much less it is a canonization.

It’s the Church pleading for mercy on the soul of the departed.

Don’t you think Kennedy needs it?

I could not agree more. I’m not upset about the things the family said at all. Health care was very important to him. The country of Turkey is very important to me and I hope that is reflected in my eulogy as well. Let us remember what Jesus said in last Sunday’s reading. He reminded us not to focus too much on human tradition. Indeed that is why I left the Latin rite because it was so focused on tradition that there was no room for someone like me who likes Turkey so much attention was paid to the tradition that it drove me away.

Have you totally missed the points here? No one has said that we should not pray for Kennedy. No one has said that he was not forgiven by the Lord and will be in Heaven (perhaps with a stop-off along the way). What some of us are saying is that it scandalizes the Church to have such a public funeral, attended by high members of the clergy. Perhaps you do not know anyone other than Catholics. Most of us do and the impression this has left with those outside the church is one of hypocrisy.
 
The Church is right in allowing any Catholic a Mass of Resurrection provided that soul has been absolved of all sin (which, as I understand, occured). However, I feel the Church was remiss to allow the Mass to be a public spectacle. It should have been a private Mass.

Sure, we want all our brethren to be afforded all the sacraments to get them to Heaven, but to allow such a public Mass for someone who knowingly and willingly thumbed his nose at Church teaching most of his public life borders on incredulity and scandal.
