As the one who started this thread…great post…couldn’t have said it better…

I’ve pushed past 70, by a couple of years and I can affirm that I got opinions that lots of folk on here wouldn’t agree with. And always have had, re: other folks, generally.

Good for me.

However, I will render a salute, in your honor, for your nuanced approach to what old folks might think (because…old) to the two John Wayne replica Congressional Gold Medals, popped up on the shelf with my challenge coins, con coins and similar memorabilia, in front of a few signed SF books.

I do like Marion, in many ways.

He was a man. Take him for all in all. I shall not look upon his like again.

Though I did look at other folk, over the past 70+ years.

I don’t take Wayne for a deep thinker, I’m not even sure I would say he was a more than workmanlike actor, but having his legacy tarred and feathered for some comments in an old interview seems ridiculous and over the top.

And frankly I was more unpleasantly surprised to learn that Sigmund Freud believed that someone other than Shakespeare wrote Shakespeare.

P.S. welcome back, @(name removed by moderator)!

I’m pretty sure it was either Shakespeare, or another person of the same name.

Opinions vary on that.

But so was another of the same initials. Who was, for all that, a man, take him all in all.

These new standards where everyone who ever existed must live up to current standards of the exact moment or be erased from history are ridiculous, and their application is politically biased. Go read anything Abraham Lincoln said about black people, and it is indistinguishable from anything the most virulent white supremist utters today. Shall we pull down the Lincoln Memorial? Take your pick of any man or woman from the past and you will find an opinion that is objectionable today.
I would agree with your stance, it was well thought out.

Germans are cold fish, Jews are smart, Irish mixed with Italian make the most beautiful in the world, you’ll get piles sitting on cold cement……………

Maybe I should dig up my grandparents and read them the riot act!~

Thank goodness we know better now though, eh?

This doesn’t excuse some of todays disgusting rhetoric in the least, but I understand where you’re coming from and applaud it. Good in-sight.

Have I mentioned my Kipling collection?

I like Kipling. Some folk, OTOH, have never Kippled.

Interesting post that illustrates the problem.
If we salute Wayne, is it clear that we are not praising him as some kind of ideal man, but also agreeing to acknowledge major faults, rather than disputing them.

I think it is only a big deal insofar as people are inclined to dismiss the content as reasonable That dismissal is the big deal.

Indeed, it’s really just a further exposition on the offensive quote in the OP.

I don’t necessarily think that his films should be vanquished but to identify this guy as a real jerk seems accurate to me.

I agree. Although I am not in favor of calling anyone a real jerk, the words arguably better belong to spending time and energy defending the content of Wayne’s comments.

Oh, yes. I identify major faults in all sorts of people.

And also minor faults. Some times I mention them. Some times I don;t.

Can’t think of anyone I’d identify as any kind of ideal man, or other term.

Some closer than others.

One of the things to remember, as you know: “They have said and they will say. Let them be saying”.

Isn’t Jesus the ideal man?

He can be terrifying.

No sarcasm intended.
