IP,
Please do not allow yourself to be concerned by the fact that there are those, even within the body of Christ, who claim to know better than the publications put out with the Pope’s note of it being a sure norm for the teaching of the Faith. Recall in scripture that it says that the seed will be cast, some on rocky ground, some on furtile soil, and there will be weeds that grow with the wheat and they are to be allowed to grow for they will be seperated at the threshing.
So, it is to be expected that in the Church there will be those who believe things in error, alongside those who know truth. It is our responsibility to remain humble so that on those occations where we are the one in error (and I assure you, there will be a time, when unwittingly, each of us takes our turn) we do not lock into that error through our pride. Humility is the greatest defense against false teachings. Pray for clarification, seek an answer using reference materials and looking to a qualified authority for the answer. You may find yourself amazed at how efficient the Holy Spirit can be in providing you with the answers you need, when you need them.
For me, I’d take the word of the CCC first, over a person posting on these forums claiming the contrary. If, however, I had a gut feeling that the poster was correct and that the “evidence” supplied made a strong case, I’d take it to another authority in the Church for further clarification. If it was a serious matter and I trusted the orthodoxy and learning of my Pastor (I’m lucky, I trust my pastor on both counts, YEAH!), I’d ask him. If not, I’d check with Ask an Apologist, or one of the Holy Priests who minister via EWTN on a subject related to the topic of concern.
But you don’t just take a position based on your private interpretation of some old documents and the say so of an individual without the backing of the Church. Verification tends to lead to clarification.
That’s my 2 cents worth.
God Bless you as you progress through the RCIA program.
