I’m really not sure how or where to begin with this. I am a married lady, a recent covert to the church. I have two daughters, 19 & 16. I have been a SAHMW&M for most of our 20 years of marriage.

Without going into a long story, my husband makes good money, but now that the children are older, he thinks I should work and contribute to the household monetarily. I am a HS graduate with no prospect of really making near the money he does. I clean the house, cook, mow the lawn, take care of the pets, etc. I get no help from any of the rest of the family. I’ve tried working full-time before, and the household goes to pot when I do because I get no help.

I’m really not sure why I’m posting all this as there are SO MANY other serious needs and prayer requests out there. I guess I just need some prayer for guidance and how to handle the curve balls life throws at me.

Thanks for reading.

Hi KansasGirl!

I prayed an Our Father and a Glory Be for your situation at home!

Maybe you might be able to start getting your feet wet at a part time job; that way you would still have time to devote to your family. Another option, if you have the time/talent to devote to it, might be to start a little business of your own. That is what I am trying to do while I am searching for a job.

If you know how to sew, maybe you could put a little ad on the back of your church bulletin offering your services. If you are a good cook, perhaps other busy families in your neighborhood might like to purchase a ready made meal from you a few nights a week. If you love caring for children, perhaps you could babysit or have a small daycare at home. (If you try one of these ideas, especially the daycare, you may want to check the applicable laws in your state first).

Maybe if you go back to work full time, you can come up with an arrangement regarding dividing the household chores between yourself, your husband, and your daughters. Maybe if they indicate what tasks they would enjoy, they might feel more invested in easing your work load.

I hope my suggestions aren’t too silly. I am trying to be helpful 🙂

It can be very disheartening to feel that you might have trouble finding a good job or to worry about not being able to take care of your home. Try talking to the Lord in prayer to see his plan and then talk things over with your husband. Between the two of you, you are sure to work things out!

Do this in a spirit of educating your husband on what it is that you do for the family. Don’t do it with a spirit of anger or bitterness or spite (BTDT!)

List every single job that you do for everyone in the family. Down to the last detail. I have handled every aspect of running the home including car care, child care, housework, house remodeling, house upkeep, sometimes lawn care (we pay right now to have the lawn mowed), doctor visits, dentist visits, etc. It’s going to be a very long list. Of course it was longer when your girls were younger - they are hopefully at least doing a few things for themselves now!

The main 3 things I do are shopping for food, planning a menu and cooking supper every night except Friday (hubby and I go out together). Just those 3 things take up a good amount of time, and someone has to do them, usually that falls to the woman, not always, but frequently. So if the wife is working, when does the shopping get done? Does your husband enjoy home-cooked meals? Does he like the budgeting you can do when you have time to plan a menu and shop for that menu? Figure out what you would have to pay someone to accomplish all the things you do. Who will take the cars in for oil changes, state inspections, tire rotations, body work if there’s a crash? What if one of the kids gets sick at school? (I know, in high school, it’s rare, but it still happens.) Who plans for holiday celebrations, sends cards out, buys Christmas gifts? Take notes during one of your average days so you remember everything! And try to find out what it would cost to have to out-source those jobs.

Also, if he makes enough money for the household to have any luxuries such as travel, remind him that in a few short years, it will be just you and him again when your girls are both in college. If you start a job, you will be tied down to that job and not necessarily free to travel with him. I have never been able to go with my husband on business trips, but now that our youngest will be starting college in the fall, I reminded him that we would be much less tied down than we have in 21 years, unless I took a paying job somewhere. Now, granted, I am 55 years old and do not relish the idea of starting a career at this point in my life. You could be a lot younger and still have many years to go until you are ready for a break. If that is the case, then by all means, start looking for a part time job. But every hour away from the house means some chore that you will not be able to do for your family, so delegate that to your husband. DO NOT I repeat DO NOT work yourself into the ground doing all of your previous home management jobs AND also doing paid work outside the home.

I will pray for you.

Thank you for the kind replies and advice. I think the biggest problem I have is that I truly feel my calling in life is to be a wife and a mother. I have always felt that. My husband is “all about the money,” if that makes sense. Sometimes, I feel like I’m more of a burden to him than an equal.

I guess I’m just having a pity party day! Forgive me… :o

Ask him what his goal is in having you work. That may give you more insight into his motivation behind this.

Perhaps then he would be able to sit down an have a conversation. What does he foresee for you guys in the future? What do YOU want?

You may then be able to think of a way to fulfilling his dreams in a way that is acceptable to both of you.

I was going to PM you but you turned off that function, so…🤷

One of the drawbacks of being a full-time wife and mom is that you don’t have a paycheck to wave around as your sign of worth. For men who have grown up expecting their wives to contribute to the finances by working, it can be a problem…Your husband probably likes all the things that you do for the family by being at home, but he also wants to feel that you are helping him support the family. Men used to be proud of supporting their families, and would be ashamed if their wife had to work, because it implied that they were not man enough to support the family on their own. But thanks to “women’s liberation,” (what feminism started as!) men have been trained to expect us to not only do all our other domestic duties, but also hold paid work or even better, a career, outside the home. And many women do just that, and drive themselves crazy or sick doing it.

My husband and I have had this subject come up again and again. Sometimes he does treat me more like I am his child than his equal partner. I have to remind him that I raised his sons pretty much on my own quite a bit of the time and that is worth something, thank you very much! 😛 His mother worked after his parents divorced so he thinks it is fine for mothers to work outside the home.

After your girls are both out of the house, you can do volunteer work if your paycheck is not needed. What about going to college yourself? 🙂

Hmm…I did not know I had PM’s disabled. I think that’s fixed now. :o

I have thought about going back to school. In fact, I do have a little bit of college under my belt.

I sure I would go nuts hanging around the house all the time even if I could find a lot to do. I would keep a diary of everything you do say for a week or a few days. Then present it to your husband and let him what he’s going to have to help with if he wants you to go back to work. Maybe make an agreement that if he meets you halfway and helps out you’ll continue with the plan to return to work and if not then you have carte blanche to stay at home if he doesn’t hold his end of the bargain. Just an idea. I would write down what you do at home and insist he does what he says. If he doesn’t say …do the dishes then don’t do them yourself let them go till he gets that idea and if that doesn’t work remind him of his agreement to help you. If he won’t help you then let him know that without help you can’t return to work.

And gas and milk didn’t used to be $4/gallon…🙂

I’m torn about what to write down as my thoughts on this topic. I really enjoy my wife staying at home. We are extremely blessed to be able to afford to live on my income alone, with 3 kids and 1 more in the oven, and we have done so since we were 21…I am very proud of the fact that I can provide this life for my family…But I really don’t know what to think about what we should do when the kids are all in school…granted, we have at least 6 years to think about that, but it is still a thought that crosses my mind. I believe that we will still hope to have her stay home when the kids are young, but I don’t know what advice to give the OP because her kids are so much older…I sometimes think that women don’t understand the pressure and stress that comes from knowing that every single thing that costs money for your family-food, housing, medical care, clothing, fun stuff, car repairs-all falls on our shoulders, 100%. That is a very, very sobering thought…and very scary as well. Sometimes I think that I would like to have some help paying some bills one day, other times I think how cool it would be if my wife never had to work another day in her life.

I think I just rambled a bunch and didn’t answer anything at all…that is what happens when you post at 3am…🤷

OP, what about doing something to make a little money like sell Mary Kay, or Pampered Chef, or Tupperware, or Avon? Then you only put the amount of time in it you feel like putting in it?

I don’t think you’re being selfish unless you have lots of time on your hands when you could be working. In your shoes I would make a list of everything you do in a day. I did this once before when my husband was complaining that he came home to a messy house when I was alone with the kids all day. I carried a small notebook and pen around in my pocket. Whenever I did anything I wrote it down with the time started and time completed. Even things that sound relaxing were put in context.

Ex:
11:00-11:08 checked email while two kids pulled my hair and another spilled water
11:08-11:11 cleaned up spilled water
11:11-11:25 made lunch
11:25-11:40 ate four bites of my lunch before the kids whined so much that I gave the rest to them
11:40-11:42 changed clothes since the kids smeared peanut butter me
11:42-11:43 sprinted to the door to sign for a package
11:43-11:47 refolded and put away the clothes the kids pulled out the dresser while I was at the door
11:47-11:52 changed three diapers and one outfit
11:52-noon cleaned up the dishes from lunch

…and that was just one hour of nine he would normally be gone every day.

After reading my minutes of the day he had a much better understanding of what I do all day. When I would try to explain things without a list he would seem to think that everything was easy, quick jobs. The list helped him he that doing 1000 easy, quick jobs every day add up to one very difficult, time consuming job.

What if the contribution was the goal, and not the immediate result? You probably have other interests and talents, maybe you could go to college and get a degree in something you REALLY LIKE. then getting a job would be a fun thing for you, maybe you could even set your own hours, or work from home.

Just a thought- your current circumstances may not always be. I appreciate stay-at-home-moms, BUT after the kids leave- unless you have an estate- there, logically, is more time. And being able to support oneself, if need ever arises, is a good thing, and may take pressure off of DH. Breadwinners feel a lot of pressure esp, in today economy.
