The monetary based economy is simply the extension of a resource economy. As long as human life is limited to the Earth, resources will be in shortage.

Money is used to transfer resources, since the owner of a factory, for example, cannot pay his workers in chickens. But the scarcity is still that of physical, earthly resources.

Do you understand our Federal Reserve Bank system?

Is that actually “over population” of humans, or rather “underproduction” of resources?
I don’t assume an infinite number of resources.
Why is the solution never an increase in production, but a decrease in humanity? Who would inspire such a thought?
We do increase production, but it has its natural limits. As far as a decrease in the number of people, if you haven’t noticed, population is still increasing.

So, what is your “solution”?

So, what is your “solution”?
It’s not relevant. People aren’t interested in “solutions,” because they require action, change, and (notably) inconvenience. Therefore they always ignore the problem and nature takes its course. There are plenty of examples of currently isolated populations that have reached steady state, as well as historical examples of societies that have ignored the inevitable resource overusage; feel free to study them. The difference this time is that we’re doing it on a global scale.

No, it will not change its doctrines, because such are irrevocable.

But overpopulation is a real problem because the resources at present are unjustly distributed. The solution is in reforming the distribution of goods, not sterilization and murder. The population controllers are proposing the wrong solution to a real problem.

It’s the moral equivalent of summarily executing all males between 18 and 25 to solve the problem of crime. It is effective and the problem is real. It’s just a very horrible idea morally, when there are other, harder, but viable means to fight crime, like education and providing other, lawful outlets for young men to exert their talents.

World over-populated, don’t make me laugh…the population of the world could fit into Ireland with lots of counties to spare…such a calculation has been done. Anyone who has driven a pick-up through the African bush for hundreds of miles and rarely saw a fellow human knows the vastness of this planet…I’ve done it numerous times in my past!
God created us as sexual creatures for a very good reason…it was by His design for a Divine purpose…He knows every soul before it is conceived and bestowed the gift of free will to all these souls…the journey to Heaven begins and we have to figure it out…but I’m reasonably sure that those born into abject poverty are going to have a rough earthly journey and a material free entry into His world of eternity…we in our comfortable western lifestyle love to rattle our cages and opinionate about where God has gone wrong in “over populated” areas…just a few thoughts folks!

Other calculations have been done also. For instance, the earth its beyond its capacity to support current human populations without intensive fossil fuel usage. In other words, to simply sustain current populations, we MUST ALWAYS have additional energy (name removed by moderator)uts to sustain ourselves. Given that those energy sources are used incredibly faster than they were created, we’ve got a major problem heading our way.

On the other hand, some of us have been to densely populated cities that cannot support themselves from the land upon which they sit. Vast open lands are required for food, energy, and other resources to support these dense population centers.

Would there be enough arable land? If a dome were put up over the island extending into space, would there be enough atmosphere exchange to prevent carbon dioxide poisoning?

Near the beginning, men were few, thus the order to procreate. Now, men are not so few, in fact we approach overpoulation. If we reach a state of overpopulation, where uncontrolled birthing of children is truly poor stewardship of natural resources, is it expected that the Church will change her position on certain issues of sexual morality?
There are enough resources to go around at this point. It’s just that the few are taking the lion’s share and leaving moldy crumbs for the rest. That is what the Church is calling us to rectify.

That and also our willy nilly destruction of the resources needed for human survival on into the future.

Since as they say one person in a rich nation, like the US, uses up 10 to 50 times more resources than a person in poor countries, like India, China, Mali, etc, it behooves us to reduce our waste (at the very least, even if we don’t share with others), as Pope Francis has called us to do.

I think we will be destroying earth’s ability to sustain even a portion of the current population within a century or so, so it really is not a matter of “overpopulation,” but gluttonous, prodigal, rash destruction of life-sustaining resources (air, water, climate, food productivity) to the effect that even a population two-thirds or half our current size won’t be able to survive.
