Yes, you have people in countries, for abortion, for homosexual partnerships, for contraception etc… Yes? And then you have them for immigration, and worried about “Over population”.

I’m not going to run into the four stages of a country, but basically, there will be a boom in the next fifty to a hundred years, of about three billion, maybe four. But it will start to decline for a period, due to the levelling off of birth and death rates.

Here’s an example: Holland.
Holland is for euthinasia, homosexual partnerships, abortion and contraception. All of this, has literally reduced the Dutch birthrate to a decline, they desperately need immigrants. But immigrants are causing social problems, due to their refusal to integrate. The Dutch mostly dislike immigration. I know a fair few Dutch, I’ve been there, the attitude is “Stop immigration.” yet, they fail to realise… That would cause a sharp decline in their population, and economy, due to the fact they NEED immigrants to fill jobs.

Put regulations on contraception, ban abortion, ban euthinasia and ban homosexuality (Interesting fact, homosexuality was only decriminalised, in Ireland, in 1995 - Unfortunately, they’ve worked fast in the last ten years), this will increase their native population, and decrease their reliance on immigration.

Then you have the problem, of, overpopulation in developing countries, which is where helping their economies should, theoretically, move them along to the second/last stage in the stages of a country, reducing their birth rate, and death rate. Causing less of a, somewhat complicated, problem.

Edit: You fail to understand the term: “Overpopulation.”
Ireland, with a population of eight million, in 1845, was overpopulated - Our resources were insufficient to support our population.

Holland, less than half the size of Ireland, has a, present population of 16,000,000, approximately four times that of Ireland. Yet, it is not over populated.

Can you give us the link to this??
It’s been a while, so I can’t truly remeber, but I think this is what I was reading (just search the web page for “population”):

firstthings.com/ftissues/ft0408/public.html

If you search the entire site for overpopulation, many articles on the issue pop up.

http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/img/worldpch.gif

census.gov/ipc/www/img/worldpch.gif

Using this chart to gain a rough estimate of change

1970 increase of about 75 million
1990 increase of about 90 million

90 divided by 75 is about 1.2 million increase percentage

so your answer would be about

1.2 x 10^6 times the number of aborted babies world wide since 1970. give or take a few million here and there

google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=abortions+since+1970+stats

others say at maxium it would be around

2.2 x 10^6 times the number of babies aborted since 1973.

So, if you can find that number of babies murdered worldwide by abortion plug it in at google with 1200000 and with 2200000 to get a reasonable range for the max and min. then choose a number half way between them for the median.

A world consisting of only humans and those creatures able to take advantage of human habitation—like cockroaches. No trees, no gardens no parks. NO THANKS!

As you can see by my original post the world’s entire population can fit inside of the state of Texas. Therefore overpopulation is a myth.

The entire world could be living in houses built side by side to each other like you see in our large cities averaging 4-6 people per househould. Of course, you could not fit roads, schools, farms, businesses, stores and etc. also in the state of Texas but you have all of the other states in the U.S and the rest of the world to build these resources. The original formula was to show there is DEFINITELY NO OVERPOPULATION IN THE WORLD LOOKING AT IT IN THE MACRO SENSE.

Now some people (those who support the Culture of Death) look at humans as other face to feed. Others of us know people are the worlds greatest resource and more people means more productivity. Just look at one farmer. One farmer uses his/her head, two hands and two legs and is able to feed thousands of people on his/her own.

We need to listen to God’s Plan. We need to listen to the Pope & Christopher West speaking on “The Theology of the Body”. Contraception & Abortion are God’s enemy. We have no reason to worry about overpopulation because it does not exist. If we live God’s Plan, God will give send us newborns with the knowledge of technology to live on another planet if it deemed necessary. I just wonder how much knowledge has the world lost already because of people chemically aborting babies through birth control and physically killing babies through abortion? Only God knows.

We have highly populated cities because people love living with other people. This is why we have cities concentrated with many people living in small areas. We love to socialize and interact with others.

Well, if we could all exist on all of the available land without needing to use anything else but space for existence, your argument would have merit. A straight numerical calculation does not do justice to the complexity of the issue. The ability of a population to exist depends on the availability of its least-abundant but necessary resource. We are coming perilously close to running out of ours – notice the destruction of the Amazonian rain forest for cash crops or the desertification of Africa that decreases arable land. This does not mention the detailed ecosystem we destroy by using the land for ourselves, our buildings, our factories, and our recreation. That does harm we are only beginning to understand. We were given a mandate from God to have dominion over his creation and have too often used it as a mandate to do whatever we want with it. I pray that God grants us the intelligence to figure out how to live on His earth without destroying it – and I am confident that it includes making sure we do not overpopulate it.

To read these replies is a little frightening. Our world is not ours --it is God’s. How dare we assume we have a right to fill it as much as we want and push His other creatures out of it? As well, to trust God to give us the technology to go to another planet when we use ours up is a little naive. It seems to me God might just get angry that we ruined His first one.

Overpopulate it??? What are you talking about here? If you are advocating Birth Control and Abortion then I think you better read your Catholic Catechism!!! Also read the Pope’s writings on “The Theology of the Body” or listen to Christopher West’s free downloads on his website.

A good reason to have lots of celibate priests & religious! 👍

A bit over the top don’t you think? You are assuming things not in evidence and condemning a person based on your knee jerk assumptions. Not fair.

I say you have neglected to consider Natural Family Planning.

NFP is fine but Catholic Teaching on NFP states it can only be used for a very limited number of reasons.

My generation thought itself very moral for foregoing families back in the 1970s. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until I was too old that I realized my decision to not have children, in Montana, did nothing to alleviate overpopulation in Bombay or Bangladesh. 😦

Fact… As the standard of living goes up, population increase tends to decline

Fact… As the standard of living increases so does energy consumption

Fact… Those in developed countries are averse to giving up thier luxuries to reduce energy consumption.

Fact… There have been no major advances in agriculture in the recent past and the great yeild increases of the past 250 years are slowing greatly.

Fact… the populations of develping nations are growing exponentialy, while the food suply is growing slowly.

Fact… The good majority of land suitible for farming is already utilized

Fact… the gowth of cities is reducing the area of farmland

Now for a few good facts.

Fact. Humans are inovative and imaginative by nature, exceeding even the wildest imaginations of thier grandfather’s.

Fact… No longer are we “spaceship earth”… With enough advances it will be possible to utilize materials in our solar system to our advantage

In my opinion, the earth can support a certain amount of people. My son tells me that it’s 10 billion, tops. The reality of the matter is that there are limited arable soil and water resources on our planet. I’m not sure if the 10 billion is accurate, but I think people are in a deep state of denial if they try and argue that the earth can support unlimited amounts of human beings.

So, we are probably truly approaching the endtimes, I would guess.

Gerrygarvinoverpopulation is local. and yes it does exist.

There’s no such thing as over-population. However, there is over-consumption and improper use of resources.

There is always a call to reduce poor populations. However, rich populations consume MUCH more than poor populations and poor populations have a MUCH greater need for family connections/support and a young workforce. The reality is rich populations don’t want to “help” poor populations - they just want the poor populations to disappear to make more room for the so-called advanced societies of wealthier populations.

The 3 R’s for being environmental change is:
Reduce
Reuse
Recycle

They are in that order for a reason. It doesn’t matter if societies have 0 kids or 10 kids per couple - if they do not reduce their waste, reuse what they do have, and THEN recycle what cannot be reused - over-consumption will continue. the problem is people may have less children, but they do not reduce hardly ANYTHING else.

Almost without exception, every person I know with a smaller family than mine spend more money, more land, more energy, and more resources than my entire household.

Dear Rob’s wife,
All that you say is very true. However, more careful use of resources only increases the amount of human beings the earth can maintain. It doesn’t insure that unlimited amounts of people can be supported. The planet earth is ultimately a limited resource and there is actually a limit as to how many people it can sustain. Exactly what that limit is is open to arguement, but that fact that there is some upper limit is basically irrefutable.

I believe that in this century we will reach that number and civilisation as we know it will collapse. These are probably the endtimes. Christ has promised to return however, so we need not fear.

I never said anything about an unlimited number of people. People are no different than any other living creature though when it comes to habitat. The limited habitat will itself regulate (limit) the population within it. Nature is very good at self-maintence.

I believe that in this century we will reach that number and civilisation as we know it will collapse.

That’s perfectly natural and normal and has happened many times in history. Through history there has always been a fluctuation in population, sometimes in drastic growth or reduction. I personally think society is working hard towards another great depression at the least, but am not scared of it. Not looking forward to it either, but people will survive it and probably be better for it.

Yes the entire world may fit into Texas. But the concern of the world population is not in shear elbow room it is about resources.

Of the world’s land surface, only a small fraction is suitable for crop production. The rest is good for grazing and rock climbing. The question is will the rest be enough to support the 6 billion people? Not to mention that the overpopulation experts are concerned about projected populations, not as the world exists today.

If we merely cram the world’s population into Texas and say “there problem solved”, then we must admit that we should limit ourselves to only 2 children per family.

Societies have faced this same thing in the past. And they either underwent a severe decrease in population due to disease and/or war, or by some miracle, they invented a new way of generating the necessary resources. This happened 8,000 years ago when man invented farming. Some societies actually refused to farm because they saw farming as a more miserable way of life. Hunting-gathering was much easier. Those societies that remained behind are eventually fading out.

So perhaps we are poised at the face of a new age. We can see that our cushy standard of living cannot be maintained indefinitely. We are presented with a choice; to use evil means to regulate our population, or to venture forth into an unknown fog that is sure to bring hard times, but with the hope that even better times will prevail.

It would be interesting to study how history has treated those societies that were to fearful to venture forth into that fog.
