Overrated Video games?

His pick for the best and most influential RPG of all time? Final Fantasy VII.

Mine? Chrono Trigger (also my pick for best game EVER). And if you’re keeping things strictly within Final Fantasy then I’d have to go with Final Fantasy V.

Most people my age (28) would pick with Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI. People his age (18) are more likely to pick Final Fantasy VII.

His favorite Mario game? Mario 64, although he played an extensive amount of Super Mario Galaxy. Mine is New Super Bros. for the Wii, because it combines elements from ALL of my favorite Mario games from the 2D era.

There’s a disconnect there which I beleive colors people’s opinions.

Which brings us to Mario 64; the reason WHY the game was hyped so much was because it was truly the first game to break the polygon barrier in such a fashion. Like it’s predecessors before it (SMB 1 and SMB 3 for the NES, SMBW for the SNES) it created a new standard. Although you may say it’s “overrated”, it might be due to hype backlash. But I’ll say right now though, that as someone who lived through the transition that all 3D platformers owe a debt of thanks to Mario 64 for paving the way. Look at the Sonic series as it stands right now versus how Mario has fared.

Anyway, as it pertains to the OP;
  • GTA Vice City. GTA III was a masterpiece that created a whole new genre (open world sandbox). Vice City, to me, seemed rushed and lacking in polish.
  • Final Fantasy VIII, which is the worse out one of ALL of the franchise IMHO.
  • Warcraft III, although I played Warcraft II online extensively (this was pre-Battle.net no less) so that definitely makes me biased. I didn’t like how much they changed up the game play (it really does seem like a RTS version of WoW).

I tend to agree with you since FFVII is my favorite game ever and Mario 64 is my favorite Mario. The N64 was my first system followed by the playstation a year later.

However, I really enjoyed Chrono Trigger and was able to appreciate it’s worth when it was resold on the Playstation. I played Chrono Cross and it was alright I guess, but nothing memorable, but that led me to play Chrono Trigger, which was a much better game. Chrono Trigger was fun because it had a lot of replay value trying to get all the different endings by beating it at different points in the game.

My brother and I split FF Anthology and he played FFVI and I played FFV. I think he got the better end of the deal since everyone says how great FFVI was, but I liked FFV. It reminded me of Final Fantasy Tactics and had some good play. I also really liked the soundtrack as it is up there with FFVII.

FFVIII really wasn’t that bad except for that stupid song and that after the spectacular climatic ending of FFVII, the ending of FFVIII was the biggest letdown of all. I really enjoyed the card game in FFVIII. In fact, I actually would play that game online and bought some of the collector’s cards. That card game was up there with Magic the Gathering in my opinion. I really enjoyed it.

Finally, one thing nice about the Wii is all that retro stuff you can buy. My roomate, who is a few years older than me bought a Wii and downloaded all the Mario and Donkey Kong games. I never played these when I was younger but now that I had the chance, I thought they were quite fun and actually a lot harder than any of the 3D modern games.

Thank you for proving my point 🙂

My brother-in-law played through Chrono Trigger as well (he actually has the SNES cartridge now). But it’s not the same for him as it is for me; I have an un-opened FF Chronicles package and the DS version of the game. I rarely break the Cardinal Rule of buying multiple copies of the same game, but this one I did without hesitation.

FF VI is great, don’t get me wrong. But I loved the flexibility the gameplay of V offered. VI’s story was better, but V’s wasn’t that bad either. Overall they are both great games and I would recommend both them to anyone.

I HATED the junction/draw system in VIII. HATED HATE. Hatred.

It’s funny you say that FF V reminded you of FF Tactics though…because Tactics was actually inspired by FFV 🙂
 
Metroid Prime. Pure garbage. Inferior to the 2D games in virtually every way. I bought it and played it with my brother. He started to fall asleep and it just didn’t work. Jumping in first person fails spectacularly. The graphics were okay. The music was mediocre and the only good song I heard was the regurgitated fire zone song from Super Metroid.

Then there’s the scanning. Yeah. I want to read dozens of things in encyclopedic fashion when I’m playing a shooting/adventure game.

Then there’s the play control. Samus feels like she’s got lead weights on.

Terrible. Just terrible. By the way, Warcraft 1&II, Starcraft w/ Expansion. and Diabio 1&II were excellent. All the sequels to each since then have been ****. So I guess they are now overrated?
 
I LOVED mario 64, but let’s be honest, the 64’s graphics haven’t aged well. Normally I’m always gameplay over graphics, but the textures in that game, and in a LOT of n64 games are horrible.

Any final fantasy after VII, when they started making the characters androgynous. FFVIII was actually the first FF game I played, and I seriously spent the first 20 minutes trying to figure out if squall is a boy or a girl. Not kidding.

Halo, and FPS games in general. Goldeneye was the first successful console FPS, and nobody’s been able to duplicate it. It wasn’t just run and shoot. The miens, the golden gun, and lots of other stuff gave it more variety.

Blasphemy! You are excommunicated! Metroid prime is an AWESOME game. It got that whole atmospheric thing that super metroid had and perfected it. I must admit, when I heard it was going to be in first person, I was really skeptical. I didn’t buy it until it was really cheap used at gamestop, but I’m so glad I did. Prime 2 didn’t feel as cool, though, and I haven’t played 3, but my friend has told me it’s awesome.

I also remember the pokemon games (at least the first 2 generations) with fondness. I remember all those stupid rumors about how to get mew without a gameshark or how to get some kind of eyeball pokemon that can learn more then four moves. Good times.

I also got into the card game. You all know how it goes. Your friend has a bunch of cards, and gives you a few throw-away ones, like ratata and starme. Then you get hooked 🙂

I hope you’re not including Starcraft 2, cus it’s AMAZING. Totally the redemption of blizzard after the disaster that’s befallen the Warcraft games.

Starcraft is one of my favorite PC games. My cousin had it and I used to play it all the time (we exchanged games). I played the Diablo I demo, and it kind of reminded me of a more mature version of Zelda.

I agree 100%! 👍

FFVI (along with DWIV for the NES) was the best. I must’ve played that game well over a hundred times! I never really did get into the FF series again that much after FFVI. FFVII was ok, but I don’t think it lived up to the hype. FFVIII was just plain boring - there was a 30 minute cut scene that I was literally falling asleep in. FFIX was a bit better, but I haven’t played another version since then. Once 7 came (and especially with 8 - I think my first run was only 2 hours!), I felt like I was being pushed through a movie, and not actually enjoying the game. Something was lost going from pixels to polygons.

I loved it. None of the Grand Theft Autos ever caught my attention really, but RDR is a lot of fun. Beyond that, it’s gorgeous. The atmosphere of the game is simply stunning, it’s worth checking it out for that alone. I will say that multiplayer was a little too chaotic and unbalanced for my tastes. It seems like if you had a bunch of friends with the game and could form a posse for the co-op multiplayer it would be great, but the competitive…not so much.
