PA bishops request prayer, fasting, abstinence for religious liberty

Bishop David Zubik

March 7, 2012

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The assault by the federal government on constitutionally guaranteed religious liberty continues. Our concern and alarm flows from a mandate of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) which punishes the church for its firmly held beliefs and consistent teaching. This mandate — published in the federal register without change, despite claims of “accommodations” — would force Catholic employers to pay for abortion-causing drugs, sterilization and contraception.

Does anyone know if this is an “obligation” for PA Catholics? I’ve not heard that word used yet, and this article says “…] we, the bishops of Pennsylvania, request that all Catholics …]” rather than something like you are obligated.

I don’t think this is an “obligation” for anyone. Just asked for and recommended.

Funny note, when they reported this a week ago on the local tv news (Pittsburgh area), whomever wrote the copy must have thought “abstinence” meant Catholics were being asked to abstain from sex. After the commercial break, they had to do a correction.
