If I were attempting to reply as a Socratic I’d only ask questions. It might be laughiable, however I haven’t seen anyone refute the claims."
Again, all the claims against Padre Pio came up A) during his life, and B) during his Cannonization.

If you are REALLY that keen on learning the Process of Cannonization and the Catholic Church’s response to the claims against padre pio (which DID come up during cannonization and WERE used to argue against, just as you are doing right now) then google it.

I’m not your research agent Ivan.

Stigmata exhibited in 1911, according to the pictures caption
the doctor gave the acid in 1918.

So what caused the Stigmata for those 7 years in between?

I read a very good book by a Lutheran on Padre Pio, extremely balanced and not at all about glorification. This was an accusation that was made and the person who made it was discredited.

The Vatican was EXTREMELY suspicious of Padre Pio while he was alive, because believe it or not, the Vatican is very skeptical of miracle workers (just look at the Fr. Suarez debacle).

Think about it, there are people out there that see the Virgin Mary on a cheese sandwich and the Vatican has to deal with these crazies all the time, sorting out the genuinely unexplainable and miraclous from the overzealous wishful thinking that in fact takes place 95% of the time.

Secondly as another person pointed out, they were worried about the cult of personality that was developing around him. So yes, they did ban him from saying public Mass for some time- not because he was bad, but because throngs of fanatical admirers were descending on the village and praying to him, you had people selling scraps of cloth claiming it was Padre Pio’s this and that, and it was not a holy environment that was building up there. Eventually it was placed under control, and the Saint was again allowed to say Mass.

It completely boggles my mind that after 40 years since his death, and over 80 years since he received the stigmata, that people are still debating this! It’s amazing. Some believe every miracle in the Bible, but when Christ bestows the special gift of stigmata on a Catholic priest, “signs and wonders” become something to be shunned… irregardless of the graces received.

Not to mention it is a poison and would have killed him years before his death if he had used it that much. The guy is really reaching for this one.
Some skeptics pointed this out:

Pio might not have used the chemicals to make the stigmata very often.

The toxic effects could then have been minimal.

But were they?

He was a sickly man most of the time. It seems that he was not able to keep food down very well.

Padre Pio was a man of God who was the greatest Saint of the twentieth century. He had the stigmata for over 50 years. One person said he used acid to fake it. One person found this out over a fifty year period. I’m sure if Padre Pio was faking his stigmata more than one person would of known about it? Also when he died there were no marks on Padre Pio. Now if he would of been applying acid I would imagine scars would of been left? This claim by Luzzatto has made me very angry and upset. Padre Pio is no longer on this earth to defend himself and it’s up to us Catholic to defend him. Already atheist sites are jumping on the band wagon and deriding Padre Pio. We know how holy Padre Pio was and I for one wouldn’t of remained a Catholic with out Padre Pio. Why? Because I realised what happened in Jesus’ life occurred because Padre Pio performed similar miracles in his life. And there is your clue as to why Padre Pio is attacked because the secular world doesn’t want people to follow the Christian faith. Let’s call Luzzatto what he is - a follower of Satan trying to lead the Faithful astray and denying them eternity in heaven with Jesus.
Now,I am sorry but the skeptics are so angry at Padre Pio they managed to almost debunk a few of the defenses Catholics use.

I will only cite one of them to see if people can answer them,as I myself don’t like Pio getting attacked:

Here is a quote of one of the bigger skeptics, and he makes two different responses to the argument the wounds disappaered after death:

1:’'Most physicians believed Pio’s wounds were superficial.

The determination was made difficult by their supposed painfulness and their being covered by “thick crusts” of what was thought to be blood.

A distinguished pathologist sent by the Holy See noted that beyond the scabs was a lack of “any sign of edema, of penetration, or of redness, even when examined with a good magnifying glass.”

Indeed, he concluded that the side “wound” had not penetrated the skin at all. And while in life Pio perpetually kept his “wounds” concealed (wearing fingerless gloves on his hands), at death there was only unblemished skin (Ruffin 1982, 146-154, 305).

Reason bids us believe the doctors who said the wounds were superficial for that would explain why they were not septic – as can carbolic acid!

It would explain why there was not a mark on Pio when he died.

2:’'Pio made superficial wounds but only when he intended to show them off. Otherwise he just pretended to have them and that was the real reason for wearing the mittens. Why mittens and no bandages?

The daily blood may have come from a wound created just for the purpose of making blood.

Sometimes Pio could have just made scabs on his unblemished hands as if they had been wounded and bleeding.

Plus Pio settled for just having a mark instead of a side wound and marks on his feet instead of foot wounds.

He might have had hand wounds and lets suppose he had. The hand wounds seem too convenient. Why wounds there and nowhere else? Were they there just for show?

Pio having unblemished skin on the side and on the feet cannot be taken as evidence that he was not making the wounds himself.

Perhaps there were no wounds or they were too light to leave scars!

And we only have the word of a few people who say that there were no scars. Nobody knows.

Pio’s body was displayed with the mittens on.’’

This thread has been dormant for a considerable period. With rare exceptions, reviving threads after a protracted period of inactivity is discouraged because:
  • the issues that spurred them are often no longer “hot” or current topics, explaining why thread activity ceased originally.
  • posters originally involved in the discussion are sometimes no longer active on the forum and, therefore, unavailable to reply to comments added to the thread.
Our experience suggests that, when a topic merits revival, it is best accomplished by initiating a new thread that draws on recent events and can be posted to contemporaneously. This eliminates the baggage of folks being frustrated by asking and not receiving responses to issues raised in early posts (because the new poster didn’t notice that the post he was responding to was made a long time ago).

Posters are very welcome to open a new thread on the subject or any other topic, as well as to actively participate in the myriad active threads in the fora.
