…The wording in the catechism is “unique and all together singular”, doesn’t leave much room for multiple incarnations across civilizations. Nor does the Church’s definitions on Christ’s nature.
This is the reason why the landing of advanced aliens on Earth is likely to shake the foundations of the Church.

For one thing, if the Biblical story of creation does not know about the existence of aliens on other planets, then is it a story of creation or just the story of how life formed on earth? If it is not complete, how accurate is it?

Then the question of Jesus as Savior and Redeemer - if advanced aliens don’t recognize Jesus as their Savior, then how universal is the Christ? the Church will have to either change its doctrines or come up with an explanation that includes aliens.

Someone on another thread proposed that maybe we could be the “Chosen People” in the Universe analogous to how the Israelites of the OT were to the other peoples of the Earth. Of course if that’s the case a future Pope would be faced with the task of deciding whether the aliens would be admitted to the Sacraments.

It does get mind-blowing . . . :bigyikes:

But if they do exist, I do not know how they could be saved. But all of your formulations, including this latest one that the incarnation is a single and unique event or each civilization, are heretical IMO.
I see.
You admit you don’t know how other civilizations could be saved,
but you say I’m heretical without explaining why.

This is a coward’s way out; deny knowing any solution but condemn somebody else’s solution. Have your cake and eat it too. Don’t take any position so as not to be attacked for that position, but attack somebody else’s position.

Pitiful !! :crying: :bighanky:

After reading all the comments and bickering back and forth, I am even MORE convined UFO’s are the work of satan. 😃 Seriously though, it does seem like some people (and I am not talking about those on this thread) spend entirely too much time on silly stuff in this world when they should be focused on learning about GOD. Didn’t Mother Theresa say “avoid curiousy”?

[BIBLEDRB]Psalm 8:1-10[/BIBLEDRB]

Not to toot our own horn but we were made a little lower than the angels. Not to mention if you read the lives of the saints and see that humans when conformed in love to the will of God can do anything, then who cares about aliens?

Yes, lots of “ifs” about something we have absolutely no conclusive evidence for. 🙂

Methinks they are already landing almost daily.

I have taken positions, backed up with explicit quotes from the CCC. I have stated that Christ has two natures: divine and human (not alien, in any form or fashion). I have stated that the incarnation was a unique and altogether singular event (not an incarnation or each fallen civilization).

I am taking a pass on saying definitively if there are, or are not, intelligent life forms on other planets. But, I have stated that the only evidence we have been given for the existence of other life forms is the vastness of the universe, and I have given reasons why this is unconvincing or me: both from a scientific and a theological/philosophical standpoint. So I tend to believe there are none, because we have no evidence of them.

And finally, if they do exist, then (assuming they have immortal souls and are fallen), I admit to not having the foggiest idea of how God’s plan for their salvation (if He has one) works. You have speculated on this final point, and I believe your speculations is wrong (ie heretical).

I do not believe I have behaved in a cowardly way at all. All of this post, is 100% consistent with previous posts on this thread. There is nothing new, although it is better explained on other posts.

God bless. I apologize for offending you (but I do think you are being a little sensitive).

Um, point of correction - not all of us are talking UFOs, most of which can be explained away by known aerial phenomena; abduction stories by sleep paralysis and fabricated memories, and so on.

Any posts I make on this thread, and several other posters seem to share my point of view (but let them speak for themselves if they wish, of course), are about the possibility of reality-based future contact between humans and beings of another intelligent species from another real world, which has not to any credible scientist’s knowledge, taken place as of yet. Thank you. :thankyou:

avoid curiosity? what kind of bogus thinking is that?

anyway, I’m always happy to entertain as many flying saucers and little green men/women as care to visit.

In the case of a nun or monk, they are probably referring to a monastic discipline - avoiding “idle curiosity” in order to keep one’s focus on God and to avoid common everyday occasions of sin - gossip, impatience, etc. For laypersons, too, it sometimes can be a helpful spiritual practice - to resist the urge to watch celebrity gossip shows or take a peek at a questionable website or whatever.

Then there is the scientific context, which I don’t know if that’s what’s being referred to - back in the day there were notorious things like the Galileo controversy (or the popular versions of what happened) and there is a caution many religious people still feel is necessary when exploring scientific matters not to be tempted into heretical or atheistic conclusions about our world and God.

I don’t think it means all no one should ever inquire into God’s universe with a sense of wonder and awe, though. If we keep humble and realize there are always going to be mysteries we’ll never be able to solve, and that God will give us what we need - truth and charity and mercy, for starters, we’ll do okay.🙂

😃 What do you serve them for snacks? Do they like beer?

I believe I said just about the same thing on Post # 33. God Bless, Memaw

The best case against other civilizations existing in the galaxy, or universe is that the universe is simulated. Perhaps it is a divine illusion. If it is a divine illusion, than we are the only ones. I can’t say if I believe it is an illusion or not. The cosmos is just to big to comprehend.

But provided that there actually arts 60B stars in the MW that can have planets with life as is said now, than I doubt we are the only civilization.

When we send a probe to Europa, a moon of Jupiter we may have the question of life on other planets answered as there could be things swimming around under the ice.

Okay, when I said UFO’s I was talking about aliens since that is usually how people who believe in that kind of stuff think they get around.😃

It is not “bogus” and you would be wise to take Mother Theresa’s advice. Today is your lucky day, I am posting the list here for you to read. 😃 😉

Mother Teresa’s Humility List (1-9) 1. Speak as little as possible about yourself. 2. Keep busy with your own affairs and not those of others. 3. Avoid curiosity. 4. Do not interfere in the affairs of others. 5. Accept small irritations with good humor. 6. Do not dwell on the faults of others. 7. Accept censures even if unmerited. 8. Give in to the will of others. 9. Accept insults and injuries.

In this day and age, with the way this crazy world is acting, I would say we ALL should be taking Mother Theresa’s amazing advice!🙂

Mother Teresa’s Humility List (1-9) 1. Speak …ries.
I’ve read it.

you’re not a nun running a hospital in calcutta and neither am I. but if I were, I’d be using medicine and techniques to save lives or ease the last days of said lives developed because someone was curious and used this God-given gift to good ends. in fact, there are people reading this thread who are alive because some medical researcher was curious.

so I don’t accept the admonition to refrain from curiosity.

there was definitely a turning away from worldly things – including scientific curiosity – in the late roman empire that contributed to the overall decline of the West. understandable, of course, with the world being pulled down around them.
😃 What do you serve them for snacks? Do they like beer?
they drink only rye whiskey.

Scientifically speaking, the most frustrating thing is probably the distances between star systems, and even more so between galaxies. We’re getting an idea of the distribution of potentially habitable star systems. If our neck of the cosmic woods is representative of the whole, then we can assume there are a lot of places where life may have arisen and out of those some where it may be sentient.

Assuming there is some life somewhere “out there,” the Universe had to get to a certain age before these habitable systems could form and become stable, and life develop on them and go from simple to complex.

Then given those immense distances and the problems inherent with relativistic space travel, it could very well be that we are the first or one of the first. Or else there are some advanced civilizations that could conceivably find us, but they’re a long way away and may not get here for awhile, especially if they have to stop to repair the hyperdrive along the way. :hammering:

Never mind. You missed the point.

Feel free to continue talking of little green men.👍
