Paisley: Don’t Give Pope A State Welcome

The Reverend Ian Paisley has urged the Government to cancel next week’s state welcome for the Pope.

In an exclusive interview with Sky News, the former first minister of Northern Ireland also reveals he had tried to dissuade Tony Blair from converting to Catholicism when he was still Prime Minister.

Paisley was successful. Blair`s not a Catholic!.
 
I had somewhat thought Paisley had started to mellow is his old age, guess not.

Why is Tony Blair not being considered a Catholic, because of his voting record? Pope Benedict addressed that several years ago and I believe that for those of us who are faithful Catholics, the points made by His Holiness are enough.

He said that Tony Blair was being received into the Church, for which he was happy. He admitted that he knew that Mr. Blair had voted for abortion and sam-sex marriage, however, these were not impairments to entering the Church, because this is a journey, not an overnight change. He believes that gradually Mr. Blair would arrive to where he should be.

Obviously, the Holy Father had spoken with both Mr. Blair and the Archbishop and agreed that Mr. Blair was on a journey and making progress as he (the pope) expected and was satisfied.

There is nothing more to say about this. The pope is happy with Mr. Blair’s journey, so should we be happy.

Well, that’s what he got the world to think when it came to Northern Ireland - on that issue he seemed to have mellowed, so as the history books will judge him in a better light (and they probably will).

Sadly, however, he is still as bigoted as ever. Only a few months ago he reiterated is opinion that the Pope is the antichrist, as well as going on a rant about how the Catholics in Northern Ireland had been “breeding like rabbits”. Of course, the only reason he was worried about Catholics breeding like rabbits was that one day they would outnumber the Protestants.

It is actually quite ironic - though certainly not surprising - that Dr Paisley is so opposed to a state welcome for the Holy Father. He, of course, purportes to be a loyalist - that is loyal to the Queen of Great Britain & Northern Ireland - yet the religious communion (Anglicanism) that Queen Elizabeth is the head of is completely rejected by Dr Paisley, who has his own “free Presbyterian church”.
When the Roman Catholic people are torn asunder because of this matter that the Pope has in many ways closed an eye to, it is time for the Protestant people also to support them

  • on the face of it, one might actually think that he is calling for compassion towards Catholics. I say, don’t be fooled…Dr Paisley has shown that he has not changed and he is just as much the anti-Catholic bigot that the was in the 1960’s-70’s.

Are you serious?

How many non-Catholics and boneheaded “Catholics” have been led astray by Blairs continuing ***PUBLIC*** criticism of Church teachimgs, even if the secular media have (possibly) blown his dissenting views out of proportion? Heres a public figure giving lousy example; causing scandal.
It`s all very well being full of peace and love for everyone (and we should be); but we have to be aware of the sources of error.

The Holy Father has also spoken with…er…N. Pelosi…and others.

Pilgrim and NPC:
We should feel sorry for Paisley. How must he have felt with a member of Sinn Fein as a 2IC?
