Pakistani archbishop calls for arrest of US pastor over Quran burning
LONDON (CNS) – The president of the Pakistani bishops’ conference has called for the arrest of a U.S. Protestant pastor whose decision to burn the Islamic sacred book has caused fury in the Muslim world and the deaths of more than 20 people.

Archbishop Lawrence Saldanha of Lahore, conference president, said the U.S. government should seek to diffuse mounting tensions by detaining the Rev. Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center Church in Gainesville, Fla., who oversaw the burning of the Quran by the Rev. Wayne Sapp, his assistant.

I’m not sure there is a law that can be used but I find it hatefull to think a so called man of faith should do something so provocative to any religion from the safety of thousands of miles knowing that the outcome could be the death of innocents miles away.

He should be challenged to go to the Mosque in Afghanistan and sacrifice himself as a martyr if he wants but not other innocent people.

I know i should be more forgiving but I find it difficult for a cowardly hippocrit like that.

Uh… how about arresting the extremists for their murderous and rediculously backward behavior.

It is completely illogical, mentally unstable and anti social (unless of course you’re an extremist) to kill a Christian in your country for what another sect of Christianity does in a foreign country.

Islamic extremists are using ANY excuse necessary to kill mass numbers of Christians, to burn their homes and to terrorize them into leaving the country.

So would I. I originally thought that there was a mistake in this article’s title (i.e. maybe he was an ayatollah rather than an archbishop). Anyway, does not the good prelate have any understanding of freedom of speech? After all, it was not that long ago when his country was a part of the British Empire (remember that England used to be a bastion of liberty).

So would the South Asians (now Pakistanis, Indians and Bangladeshis) who chafed under the British Raj. Gandhi’s peaceful resistance worked, but only because the British lost their taste for the oppression necessary to maintain an empire. England may have been a bastion of liberty during the British Empire, however that liberty wasn’t extended overseas.

As for the archbishop’s comments, I am inclined to think that he is looking after the welfare of the Christians in his country. Speaking out against the Quran burning may mollify some of the more extreme elements in his own country. And he seems to be saying that official action by the US government would also help the situation in his country.

Of course, in the US the constitutional protection on freedom of speech means that government action is impossible. Whether the archbishop is aware of this, I don’t know. However, I am sure that many of his countrymen are not aware of it.

The man is an idiot, but it was the Muslims who spread the word for this around. They want to incite their co-religionists to violence, and much of that is orchestrated.

Before Indians “chafed under the British Raj,” they suffered under the Mogul Emperors which was worse Hindus and, of course, Christians. India after independence adopted institutions modeled on those of the rest of the English-speaiing world. Pakistan has, at least in form adopted the same, but then the place has gone down then tubes, as they seem to be reverting to Islamic tradition…

After the USSCs recent verdict on protests and military funerals by the WBC, this guy is in no danger. He’s not on Phelps’s level yet.

It sounds like the Archbishop is not that familiar with our freedom of speech. I cannot really blame him for that since he comes from an area of the world with very little freedom.
