Pants! ...and my pride

Forget how the world defines modesty. What matters is how the HOly Catholic Church defines modesty.
Please show me where in the Catechism it states that women must confirm to the standards of dressing advocated by Ms Hammond in her book. If it’s not there, maybe you can get me something where the Pope has endorsed this mode of dress as the only correct modest attire for Catholic women?

Other than that-it’s all opinions.

Attractiveness is not what I am writting about. When many men look at women’s bottoms, it is of a sexual look.
And vice versa. You made my point for me, but perhaps I wasn’t clear because I didn’t want to be blunt. On that basis, nobody should wear pants, we should all wear tunics.

and you really think that women never look at a man’s bottom in a sexual way?
Exactly. We should all wear tunics. Or, we should all, men and women, be free to wear pants and try to avoid the near occasions of sin as most of us likely have been doing all along.

I may be re-stating someone else’s statement, but here goes:
I don’t remember Jesus, the Apostles, and angels or any one else wearing pants in the Old Testament. So in all fairness, if the women must wear skirts, whouldn’t the men have to wear full length tunics? Pants came about a work wear in job convenience and when women started working outside the home in factories (WWII), it became much easier to move about and REMAIN modest when picking things up from the floor, walking outside in gusty winds AND warmer in winter!

I would rather see ladies wearing pants with modest tops than seeing the number of men who come to Mass wearing shorts, Tshirts and their ugly sandals. Looks like they were in the middle of mowing grass.

I also am astonished at the number of young girls wearing short shorts, mini skirts, and skimpy tops, and their parents allow it. I am embarrassed for them.

But, the only excuse we can give for it is “at least they came to Mass”.

What exactly about wearing pants is so sinful? If it is where they lead the eye from either back and front views, doesn’t a man wearing pants have the same effect as a woman wearing pants? So, if that is the case, nobody should wear pants then, right? I’m not suggesting anyone parade around not covered, but if that is the case, then shouldn’t we ALL just stop wearing pants and just wear tunics?
I brought this up before: I tend to look at the crotches of men because there’s often a bulge there in some form (and, if there’s not, I tend to look that much more to see where it could be). I don’t see any men offering to change their wardrobe on my behalf.
I can imagine the scene at the Final Judgment. Our Lord turns smiling to those on his right and says, “I was hungry and you fed me. I was naked and you clothed me. I was lonely and you… Hey! are those PANTS?!? Get in the other line.”
You don’t know, that is what Father had me thinking. He even alluded to it’s not right to wear pants at home when only your family will see you. At that point I was thinking, ‘Even Muslim women are able to show their hair in their home’.
So that invalidates his argument? That he’s a man? So, let me get this straight; you’re saying that just because he’s a man, his theological arguments are invalid?!? His arguments for practicality may be limited, but this really isn’t in the realm of practicality, as he pointed out…

Pax.
Let him walk a mile in my dress, then we’ll talk.
not even a holy priest? Why do women have such are hard time dressing modestly? Is it the influence of the modern world?
Who do you think you are dictating what is modest? Why should this holy priest be listened to? It wasn’t about any serious sin, it was his take on pants, women, and modesty. This is not an infallible pronouncement. Like another poster said, when somebody else pays my bills, then they can dress me.
These are all… dare I say, emotional arguments that are not honest. 🙂
I agree, people posting opinions they found of priests, popes, and cardinals, using Our Lady as a gateway to their thinking, claiming children look down on their mothers if they are not in dresses – these ARE emotional arguments without a thread of logic linking them to my original post. In the meantime, thankfully, we have had those posts about not being able to climb the monkey bars and having to be lady like and that pants are cultural, that display logic and that pants in and of themselves on women aren’t sinful/immodest.

I agree. Please show me as well.

Pants have nothing to do with that. If a man wants to look at a woman, he’ll find an excuse. If they are looking at a woman’s butt in church, they need to re-evaluate their thinking in front of Our Lord

Thank you RedSoxWife for the link. I find it disheartening that St. Padre Pio, instructed by God, would refuse to listen to confessions of anybody, but, I am glad that it was because they were wearing skirts/dresses too low/high. I am glad that he acknowledged that there were immodest dresses. Not everybody who goes to Mass acknowledges this. I note that the second sign covered a group of what was acceptable in the church. I will note how many men come to church in short sleeves. Incidentally, I know a few women who love and are devoted to St. Padre Pio. I have seen them in pants at Mass (OF).

This thread has been playing heavily on my mind. Last night, standing in line for Harry Potter 6, in the sun and 98 degree heat, I wore shorts (I don’t even want to get into if shorts are immodest) and a short short sleve t-shirt. There were other fat women as well and they were wearing shorter shorts or tank tops. There were also thiner women who wore shorty shorts and t-shirts. I saw one or two in pants and one or two in a skirt. I have to say, I didn’t notice those in their shorts being immodest, not with there BEWBS hanging out. Breasts accented, put on a platter for all to look at. It occured to me something I pointed out to the Muslims on this thread years ago (for the ladies): It doesn’t matter how much your hair is covered, if I can see your panty line (as indeed, Muslims in this country DO wear pants), then the modesty is voided.

I did receive a pm from two people who said that pants on women ARE ALLOWED even when the Pope celebrates a Mass, but, one of them said that she wears skirts/dresses to Mass (and more often, I think) because it is still the formal thing to do; that is, when women get dressed up, they wear a dress, and, since Mass is the greatest even one can go to…

I do wear a dress once a year. Easter. I’ve been wearing the same dress for a few years now. Other than that, I did so for this past Christmas…and Halloween. An occasional Sunday here and there, but, mostly, I can break one out for the greatest holidays EVER.

Skirts/dresses just aren’t that convenient to my life. I’d be uncomfortable and I’d feel out of place. I’m not looking down on the women who wear them, but, I would feel VERY self conscience and, is it any wonder? Jeans/jean shorts allow me to blend. I can be one of many. I don’t want to be the one everybody notices because of how I’m dressed. I’ve had that happen before and wasn’t a fan of what I couldn’t control.

I ask all on this forum to pray for me: that I get a career. Not a job, a career. That way I can afford my bills, to have Masses said for my relatives (especially the Protestant ones who I know would never have the prayers for them from everybody else), to be able to afford birthday presents for my Goddaughter’s belated birthday and her sister’s upcomming birthday, the upkeep for this house, some decorations for this house, some entertainment that I want, and finally, the long dresses on that holyclothes site. Once I have steady, reliable income, perhaps this wont be such an issue.

Thank you all for your prayers.

Just the other day i was watching a movie on the tv. I thought, Wow. Mel Gibson really has a nice butt. I guess it would have been better if he was wearing a kilt.

I was thinking reading this - when I was pregnant, I used to wear my husband’s jeans. I hope no one thought I was trying to pass as a man.

All I could think of is going to Yankee games with my friends and all the discussion of how good Derek Jeter’s butt looks in pinstripes…😉

Yes. Everybody thought you were a man. A pregnant man. A pregnant man whose children will look down upon you because you are wearing pants.

Have you ever seen a guy in pumps?

:clapping::clapping::clapping::clapping::clapping:
Actually, it’s very traditional, very proper, for men to wear men’s pumps with a tuxedo. And there have been times historically when pumps have been the most fashionable choice for men.

Oh no! I hope that no one confused you with that pregnant man who was in the news last summer:)

I would like to add another slant on the wearing of pants issue. I have two reasons for wearing pants: First, most all of the women attending mass where I used to go wore pants. It was a very casual atmosphere and one didn’t see many dresses or skirts unless it was Easter time. The second, and more compelling reason I wear pants is that both my husband and I, in our young and stupid years, thought it was cool to get tattoos. I have a rather large one on my left calf that would show if I wore a dress or skirt. Even the longer varieties tend to have slits up the side which flash my tattoo as I walk. Since I regret getting tattoos, and since I feel respect towards the Church and those attending, I wear pants.

Hmmm I can see Padre Pio having strong opinions on what people wear to mass but I would question sending someone away from confession. Suppose one of these poor women were in a fatal accident while on her way home to change?

“Reply to Objection 3. As stated in the foregoing Article, outward apparel should be consistent with the estate of the person, according to the general custom. Hence it is in itself sinful for a woman to wear man’s clothes, or vice versa; especially since this may be a cause of sensuous pleasure; and it is expressly forbidden in the Law (Deuteronomy 22) because the Gentiles used to practice this change of attire for the purpose of idolatrous superstition. Nevertheless this may be done sometimes without sin on account of some necessity, either in order to hide oneself from enemies, or through lack of other clothes, or for some similar motive.”
