I’m glad you take your responsibility so seriously. You are full of bad will and there is no further need to continue waste time here.

But one last question:

How many women here are, or ever have been, sexually stimulated by seeing a man jog by in speedos?

Then ask a man the same question seeing a women in speedos and compare the difference.
I don’t know of any women who think a man in speedos looks attractive…and I’m not talking about devout Christian/Catholic women either.

For what it is worth, I just read an article on the Vatican dress code. Below are two excerpts, which probably won’t further the discussion because they apply to the Vatican only and also seem contradictory, but I offer them for information.

"…The U.S. Embassy to the Holy See has a Vatican protocol primer that walks people through what is considered the proper dress code.

For men: black or dark suit, aka business attire, with a dark tie.

For women: black skirt or dress that reaches at least the knees, black top with mid- to long-sleeves, no pants, simple jewelry, dark closed-toe shoes, and a black hat or veil is optional."…

And, now the phrase that appears to be contradictory to the above guidelines:

"…But the Vatican does not mandate that women cover their heads. In fact, the pontifical household said there is no formal or specific dress protocol at all.

The household’s regent, Msgr. Paolo De Nicolo, told Catholic News Service that as long as a person’s outfit is “decent” and “in good taste,” anything goes."…

I honestly think I need to exit this conversation and reflect on this myself. I know I said I was finished before and yet here I have been several posts later, but for now, I think I will try to discern for myself whether a change is necessary for me or not. Thanks for all your thoughts and (name removed by moderator)ut.

The reason, I think, we cannot have an honest conversation about this is because there has been no documentation saying pants wearing women will burn in Hell, no matter how much some would like to spin it that way. We, the pants wearing women, have defended our position time and again, and it is falling on deaf and proud ears.
I think we are both getting this. I mean seriously. I have only been considering this [wearing long skirts only] for the past two weeks. The idea of it has come and gone several times over the past few years, which is why I am beginning to look at it more seriously.
Also, this isn’t always about America. As provided prior, pants are not new to women. We, as a matter of fact, have pointed out St. Joan of Arc and women of other cultures.
And this may not make many happy or may make you think less of my debate of this issue. But, I don’t live nor have visited other parts of the world. I live in America and am confronted with American fashions each time I go to a store trying to look for something modest for myself and my daughters. It becomes more difficult each time we go. I have found that I have to buy my daughter pants 2 sizes bigger than she needs. If I buy the ones that fit her in length, they are skin tight on her butt and theighs, and she is not chunky or anything.
And, IF another man came out saying RosaryCrusader was wrong, and that he does not agree? Would that man be a liar? …Of course this IS hypothetical.

Just because a woman does it less, doesn’t mean it’s any more right. I have looked and thought. I have thought a LOT about it in various degrees. Ultimately, though, though I think about it, it falls apart when I realize that the man I’m thinking about isn’t my husband, and, probably isn’t even Catholic.
I don’t think women do it in the same way that men do. Let’s see…a few months ago we were in Ocean City, it was senior week. There was a lot of hoochie mama teenagers. At night the group we were with was sitting on the deck of our hotel. The guys were making fun of the teens walking by because they knew they were looking for parties to go to and such, and being that they are underage, they can’t go to the type of party they were looking for. Anyway, it is no surprise that when you go to the beach you will be confronted with lots of immodesty. There was one group of girls in particular that came walking down the boardwalk. They had their bikini’s on with t-shirts over top of them. They had cut the shirts over top of their chest area. When I saw this I was thinking how gross these girls were and how they had no shame. I was appauled by them. The guys that were sitting on the deck bout leapt from their chairs with their jaws dropped. They were speaking of God’s name, but not in praise or worship. They were definitly lusting over these girls.

Now, I am not saying that men would have the same reaction to girls in pants. What I am saying though is that I never saw a woman react in that manner to a guy she thought was cute. Which brings me to what I have said multiple times in this thread and what RosaryCrusader has been saying.

Men are visual creatures. A woman’s breast, not only is it for nourishment of children, but is for a mans pleasure and arrousal. This is Scriptural (read Song of Songs). Maybe I just can’t imagine a woman looking at men and coming to the point of arrousal. I can imagine that in men, what do you think happens when they go to strip clubs?
Great, men and women are different. So what? We can give birth AND wear pants. We are just that rockin’!
When Scripture says that women shouldn’t wear that which partains to a man and men shouldn’t wear that which pertains to a woman, what does it mean? Is it normal for a man to wear makeup? Is it normal for a man to wear jewelry (i.e., pierced ears)? Society doesn’t see a problem with this. Does God?
Again, my offer still stands. I will give one the address to mail me the dress if one really is offended by me wearing pants to Mass. Really. I have it all picked out and everything. It’s from holyclothing.com. Does anybody want to buy me a dress?
Hey, times are tuff right now. I am trying to find the money to begin transforming my own wardrobe… 😉

Here is a book, which you can read online. It isn’t that long, but long enough for me to read right now. I will probably read it online. It is actually an excerpt from a larger book, but this section deals specifically with modesty. It is from Father Bernard Kunkels
book, “My Life in Prayer”. Father Kunkel was the founder of the Marylike
Modesty Purity Crusade in 1944. There is a section in this book titled the
“Marylike Modesty Handbook”. You can find this handbook HERE.

Here is the opening lines of the page:
COMMENTARY
Out of respect for Our Lord and for the edification of our neighbor, we beg women and girls to appear in Church modestly dressed. Slacks, shorts, sleeveless and low-cut dresses do not meet the norm of Christian modesty. Your cooperation is evidence of your love for Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and respect for the House of God. “Certain fashions will be introduced that will offend Our Lord very much.” Our Lady of Fatima, 1917.
Marylike Modesty Handbook of the Purity Crusade of Mary Immaculate
Nihil Obstat: Leonard A. Bauer, S.T.D.
Here is the Forward:
Christian modesty is the forgotten virtue today. Yet, it is indispensable for the protection of chastity. It is useless to try to restore chastity to the individual, the family, and society, as long as its safeguard, modesty, is either ignored or violated on such a large scale as it is today.
This handbook of the Marylike Crusade deals almost exclusively with modesty, as we embark on our organized campaign for Christian chastity. There is so little written today on modesty, and most persons who do write on this subject only serve to confuse Catholic women more and more by their many sophisms, their compromise with worldly views on this frail virtue, or even their full acceptance of pagan principles.
Yet five modern Popes have, time and again, issued directives on Christian modesty and refuation of many of these modern errors.
Is this not the reason why Christ established in His Church the Supreme Teaching Authority? To protect the Church from errors and to correct the clergy, the teachers and the parents who, intentionally or in good faith, would propagate errors?
Anyone who today dares to advocate traditional Christian modesty, is considered, even by a large number of Catholics, a scrupulous person, a disturber of conscience, or a crackpot. But did not Christ foretell that this is the price every one of His followers must pay who strives to be loyal to Him and His Church?
The Marylike Crusade holds up Mary as the perfect model for all Christians, and relies on the Magisterium of the Church, the Saints, private revelation and the Popes who are the Supreme Teaching Authority of the Church on modesty. Hence, its two-fold motto: “Whatever Mary approves - Whatever the Church approves.”
I will tell you, from skimming over this, it seems to be a much better document than some of the others I have shared with you. Of course, it will probably still be something you all hate because it goes against the will of humans. But hey, I am still sharing it. It does provide source documents, including Papal Encyclicals.

Yes, thank you (a brave volunteer) - and this is quite relevant since it’s the opposite reaction of a man. If a woman, any woman - attractive or not, is jogging by in speedos she’ll get drooled over, men will break their necks doing double takes, and the associated lustful thoughts for those who do not have moral restraints.

Men are sexually aroused visually more so than women. Women should understand this and use due restraint in selecting their attire.

There are, however, other types of clothing that women drool over when men wear them. Think of the new James Bond guy (Daniel Craig?) in the bathing suit he wore in the first Bond film he did - women everywhere drooled over that. A speedo, however, just highlights the wrong bits, and I think it also has certain unattractive cultural connotations. There is something about a speedo that isn’t manly, even though it doesn’t reveal more than the Bond bathing suit in question. Villains in movies wear speedos.

RosaryCrusader:Being things the way they are for “all” men(according to your assesment),I truly hope you devote equal if not more effort with the buddies at the office telling them how to be more chaste.
Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz wrote a poem, that you must know, right on the topic of men blaming women.
I will try to find it and post it.

First, I never blamed anything on women. If a man sins he’s responsible for his own actions but a woman who deliberately wears immodest dress sins doubly - one for degrading the temple of the Holy Spirit (presenting herself as an occassion of sin), and two, in leading her brother into sin.

A woman who dresses immodestly is not blameless as many on this forum would like to believe. Here’s St. John Chrysostom:

*“You allege that you never invite others to sin. You did not by your tongue, but you have done it by your dress and deportment more effectively than you could by your voice. When you have made another to sin in his heart, how can you be innocent? You sharpened and drew the sword. You gave the thrust by which the soul is wounded.”

“Tell me whom does the world condemn? Whom do judges punish? Those who drink the poison, or those who prepare and give the fatal draught? You mingled the execrable cup; you administered the potion of death. You are so much more criminal than poisoners, as the death which you cause is the more terrible; for you murder not the body, but the soul.”

“Nor do you do this to enemies: not compelled by necessity nor provoked by any injury; but out of a foolish vanity and pride. You sport yourselves in the ruin of the souls of others, and make their spiritual death your pastime.”*

Concerning fraternal correction: I’ve tried that and it doesn’t work. Secular minded people are not anxious for heavenly advice - cast not your pearls before swine. I know from firsthand experience what this means. When I’ve tried it in the past it leads to not only ridicule of myself but ridicule of religion and morals in general.

From a moral theology standpoint a Christian is not obligated to fraternal correction if he thinks it will have no effect or turn people away from Christianity. “Fraternal” implies correcting a brother in the faith - not a pagan who has no faith. Unfortunately I’ve had to learn this the hardway. But thank you for your concern that I might not have ever tried to correct secular minded individuals. It’s a worthy endeavor but more often has to come from a secular viewpoint, devoid of religion, to have any weight with seculars - which can be done when you bring up statistics of divorce with cohabitating couples, spread of sexual diseases etc. but we are not obliged to cram this down peoples throats day in and day out. At some point you come to the realization that all you can do is pray - which is the best remedy anyway.

P.S. I never used the word “all” men - please quote accurately for the sake of not misrepresenting someone’s argument.

As a little disclaimer for those who might think I am some sort of male chauvinist:

My wife is the one who convinced me of this position a few years back when she decided, by the grace of God, that she would forego wearing pants and immodest attire at the nudging of the Holy Spirit.

Yes, I married a pants wearing - low cut blouse wearing - spaghetti strap wearing woman who was not even Catholic. She converted to the faith and now I’m stuck with a virtuous, modest, beautiful, God fearing, 34 year old wife who loves how skirts make her feel and act more like a woman! Unlucky me…

I don’t know why I’m contributing to this thread - I ought to just ask her to contribute. Not that it would change anyone’s mind coming from another woman - most of the people for skirts on here are women. 👍

Okay, I guess it goes without saying that we have come to a point where our minds are set and we are going to do what we do. Of course, with the help of the Holy Spirit minds can be transformed so long we are receptive to His Holy and Perfect Will.

Anyway, I came across an excellent booklet. It is called “Attention Catholics - Helpful Reminders for Catholics Living in the Modern Confusion.”

It is 48 pages, but it is excellent reading. It states its sources whether they are other books or quotes from Popes, including a certain quote from our current Pope, Pope Benedict when he was Cardinal Ratzinger. This isn’t a booklet just on modesty either. It talks on topics such as: Death and Judgement, Reality of Hell, Purgatory and Heaven, Prayer Life, etc.

Chapter 9 of Part 2 is the section on modesty. It is very well laid out as to what modesty is according to the church and why it is so important. It explains why pants are not modest attire, but does say that women can get away with wearing pants if they are wearing them loosely and have a long shirt on that would cover their rear, though it is preferable to wear long skirts or dresses. For those who keep asking about modesty for men, it [the booklet] addresses these even though the church is silent on men’s modesty.

Anyway, if you decide to read it, I pray you will do so with an open mind and an open heart. Don’t shirk it just because you may not want to read about modesty, the other areas in the booklet are well worth reading too.

You stated before that in America, pants on a woman is fairly new. This, in the longrun, though, doesn’t mean that it is new at all or wrong for that matter. Just because it hadn’t been done in America until modern times doesn’t mean it’s not been done.

I sympathize with you, however, going to stores and seeing pants intended for an 8 year old girl with, “Juicy” on the butt. Not only do I get to objectify a minor but I get to do it by oggling her?! GREAT! Sign me up! There is no reason for writting to be on anybody’s butt, let alone a childs. EVER.

Those poor girls…who were dressed so they’d get noticed. I don’t think they were altogether unaware of how they were dressed. I am amazed at how women are sickened by nearly nude women. What about it is unappealing? I feel sad that these women (all women like them, in porn, as well) think there is nothing wrong with this and that they will regret and repent for their actions, but, I am not disgusted by seeing a female figure.

There are women like that. You may be blessed to have never witnessed one, but, there are women who will go after a guy and try to get with him because of his looks…isn’t that mostly what’s happening in Hollywood and other affluent places? Women, upon meeting these men, are trying to enjoy themselves with the best looking men? …And, what are these women wearing? Skirts…sans panties. I know, I know, these aren’t the skirts being talked about and the arguement goes that wearing mini skirts is a different sin altogether from wearing pants. Women DO get aroused by the look of a man. The difference is, we can hide it.

There’s nothing wrong with a man to wear make up or jewelry. Don’t treat that as an issue. If it was wrong then, we’d have no actors. Even if we’re just talking about the average guy, there’s nothing wrong with trying to appear more attractive for the attention of a mate or…whatever. Whatever the reason would be. I am not offended, and I doubt God is, that men wear earrings. Did you know that back when there were pirates, they used to pierce their ears because they thought it would help with their eyes.

You, and RosaryCrusader’s Wife and all others are perfectly fine to do what you want, but, don’t, please don’t, go around bellowing to other women that we are less than those of you all who wear skirts/dresses (and, I’m not saying you ALL do this, but, I notice it is for vain and proud reasons, as evidenced by the tones here that most do). I don’t think many are doing it because they love God, I think MANY are doing it so that they can say they do. Inviting clothing comparisons to the BVM is rediculous. She’s never appeared in a rain coat or galoshes, either. She’s never worn a bustle or the latest fashions of any person she’s visited. She can change Her appearance to appear Japanese, European, or Mexican. What does this have to do with anything. Mary never wore pants (for all we know…I mean, the Bible doesn’t specify), alright, I don’t see anybody in America, where we are, wear what She is said to have worn at ANY apparition. My gosh! Use your heads.

And, finally, I KNOW!!! Tell me about it!!! (The new wardrobe). I wish you well in finding what you want/what God tells you you NEED at affordible prices from here on out. I truly do. I hope this goes well for you and that you are doing it for the right reasons.

In the meantime, the offer still stands. I cannot decide on a pink or purple dress, but, if anybody would like to buy it for me, I still will give you the size I need and the address where you can send it so that I can wear it to Mass.

Read the booklet I just posted about. It explains why pants are not suitable for women better than any of us here can. And it does so with quotes from the Pope’s, priests, saints, and our Blessed Mother.

It does sicken me that there are clothing designers out there that create these fashions for children that draw un-needed attention to them. Imagine the temptation that places on those with the twisted desire for child porn and the like?

I don’t even like that some ‘children’s’ stores sell girls underwear on a table as if it was a lingerie store!

I am not appauled by the female form. It is just when women or young girls dress in a manner to parade their body appauls me, what little self respect they have that they feel they need to expose their bodies to be noticed.

Seriously, I don’t think any woman would wear all dresses/skirts for prides sake. I know I am certainly not, and this hasn’t been an easy decision for me either. It has taken me years to get to wear I am now.

The problem lies when we do things for fashions sake. Some men pierce their whole bodies, but it is a cultural thing. In America, there is no cultural thing for men to pierce their bodies or wear make-up. What about just some random guy wearing eye liner? This is disordered! And it isn’t me who says so but God and the Church.

Honestly, just read the booklet I shared a few posts ago, and not just the modesty sections, but the whole thing. It is an awesome booklet. I read it in less than 2 hours, with taking breaks.

Oh, and if you want to buy modest clothing, a good site is WomenWithin.com. Not everything is modest, but they do have some modest fashions and the prices are AWESOME.

I had never seen this document before, but it is excellent. Thank you for sharing this with us. I am learning much from this discussion… when I was still a protestant (only confirmed as a Catholic almost 2 years ago) I looked at the subject of dresses only for a bit, but when I became a Catholic it seemed like that wasn’t an issue. Little did I know that it is indeed a subject of debate among Catholics also!
Okay, I guess it goes without saying that we have come to a point where our minds are set and we are going to do what we do. Of course, with the help of the Holy Spirit minds can be transformed so long we are receptive to His Holy and Perfect Will.

I have only read Ch. 9 (though, I do intend to read all of it…the horrors of Hell looks like something I would like to know now to avoid later), and, I encourage all to read it. It hasn’t said anything that hasn’t already been said, and, the author of that book is interpreting what he wants. There is nothing there about pants that the Church has condemned. However, this was a quote:

“By returning to the habitual use of traditional feminine attire, women will again evoke the respect of their male counterparts and do much to combat the abuse to which they are often subject today.”

If women got respect by wearing traditional feminine attire, why was there a movement to burn bras? Were they getting TOO MUCH respect?

I am loving this thread. I know I sound like a crazy feminazi to some here. It is only here, though, as, when I pointed out the dresses I wanted to a friend (and, again, the offere still stands everybody, if you would like to buy me a dress), and she replied, “Let me guess, it covers everything but the eyes?” …She knows I’m looking for modesty and she cannot fathom that.

Section 2 of Chapter 9 talks about why women shouldn’t wear pants. This is where it says if a woman is going to wear pants, they should be as baggy as possible and it is best to wear a long shirt to cover up even more.

The author is providing quotes from various Pope’s.

LOL - I never knew this was a discussion among Catholics until a year or so ago. I didn’t even know it was an issue at all until I mingled with Independent Fundamental Baptists.

I do love this entire booklet though. I am glad it is helping you as well. Google “Marylike Modesty Crusade” as well.

]Adstrinity,

Ya know… if I didn’t know better I’d think we attended entirely different churches…😦 well, I do attend a NO church, maybe you attend a church with a Traditional Latin Mass? Anyhow, the reason I say this is that I thought of you after I went to confession today. One of the things I brought up was my sin of pride/anger/frustration about any number of topics… but one of them was that I become upset when I see people at Mass, especially serving up at the altar, in what I believe (I must insert that as my opinion considering the topic of this thread, so please no one blast me for that statement) is inappropriate dress. I was confessing my attitude issue… And no, I don’t mean pants on women, I mean backless dresses, spaghetti straps, cleavage showing, dresses up to “here”, men in jeans shorts, etc. Also, that I was having trouble telling my daughter that as Christians we need to have modest dress (again, not saying no pants, just no boobs hanging out, etc.) when we see such in church. I was told in no uncertain terms - twice - that the church is NOT here to be the fashion police, and it is up to every person to wear what they want and believe to be appropriate  I even said (at which point I think I annoyed him, although that was truly not my intention) that the church used to have definite dress standards so I didn’t understand, and he then repeated that the church is not here to serve as fashion police and made it clear that the discussion was finished. Ok then, that was fine, after all - it was confession, not as appointment to discuss church policy.

It was an exhausting afternoon. Suffice to say I spent time thinking and in prayer on this matter, but that is a topic for another post.
