A male that conscientiously avoids temptation learns to not look at or associate with females that are dressed immodestly.

‘. . . Now, observe, my daughter, the contrast between the luxurious dress of many women, and the raiment and adornments of Jesus. . . Tell me: what relation do their fine shoes bear to the spikes in Jesus’ Feet? The rings on their hands to the nails which perforated His? The fashionable coiffure to the Crown of Thorns? The painted face to That covered with bruises? Shoulders exposed by the low-cut gown to His, all striped with Blood? Ah, but there is a marked likeness between these worldly women and the Jews who, incited by the Devil, scourged Our Lord! At the hour of such a woman’s death, I think Jesus will be heard saying: “Cujus est imago haec et circumscripto. . . of whom is she the image?” And the reply will be: “Demonii. . . of the Devil!” Then He will say: “Let her who has followed the Devil’s fashions be handed over to him; and to God, those who have imitated the modesty of Jesus and Mary.”’

St. Anthony Mary Claret

Hello! I haven’t read any of the posts but the first one, but I thought y’all might be interested in this: therebelution.com/modestysurvey/ Click on “survey results”.
Throw in the fact that they make it easier for girls to kick you in the face and well…gulps

Well, let’s just say that a girl in pants can move around a lot more easily to defend herself than one in a encumbering yet “modest” long skirt. 😛

I don’t think there is a schism just a bunch of bossy boots think they have the right to choose for other people…i listen to the Holy Father and not to them

I don’t care what they say or what they think… I am a grown woman and I will decide for myself, unless the Holy Father speaks on the matter, and as far as I can tell he doesn’t care
I am a man who wears lovely dresses and skirts, is that O.K.? Really just wondering!

(also just kidding. Putting a bit of humor into the coffer. I look at some women who wear pants and think “that girl sure doesn’t look manly one bit”. You know what I mean guys.

-With love and humor, Sean 🙂

Some radical women do intentionally dress like men though - to the extent that they intend rebellion against even our current liberal social mores. Once in 7-11 convenience stores, when the male clerk served me I thanked him by saying “thanks very much buddy!” He angrily turned to me and said “I’m a girl” - I swear and promise, this person was visibly a man. A boy’s face, a high and tight military haircut, and mens pants, with a large, thick black belt and large square belt buckle. A mans casual dress shirt and fairly deep voice. I have watched my mouth with strangers ever since. I believe (personal opinion) that to ape a man in such a fashion is an abomination against the natural order ans so, an abomination against God! I feel bad for this poor decieved young girl. Very likely a lesbian, which is one of the greatest deceptions for lonely young girls ever. Our unified prayers should be devoted to these types.
Love Seany 🙂

Reading up Shin’s post more closely, I’ll have to agree with ya. No offense to anybody but geez louise, talk about prude with a capital P (with a subtle hint of anti-Semitism to boot).

I mean come on, even though I’m more of a fantasy writing nerd, I wouldn’t put an equal sign between current fashion trends, Jewish clothing, or the “Devil’s fashions” in any way or any order.

For one thing, there is a glaring difference between ancient Hebrew dresses and the ones you’d see girls wear in, let’s say, on a modern day urban street. How you can say we modern folk dressing no differently from ancient Middle Eastern peoples is beyond me. :ehh:

And secondly, appearances have never been the most reliant indicators of a person’s character. That is common sense and courtesy 101.

St. Anthony Mary Claret, lived 1807-1840, was archbishop, and founder of the Claretians, and confessor to Spanish Queen Queen Isabella II, and was canonized in 1950.

The saint is correct in saying that “Jews who, incited by the Devil, scourged Our Lord!” Notice that is not generic to all Jews.

He specifically identifies the worldly woman’s luxurious dress as an error: fine shoes, rings, fashionable coiffure, painted face, shoulders exposed by the low-cut gown. An error that can lead them to Hell.

This is also what Saint Paul said in 1 Timothy 2:9-10 (Rhiems)

"9 In like manner women also in decent apparel: adorning themselves with modesty and sobriety, not with plaited hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly attire, 10 But as it becometh women professing godliness, with good works."

The norm of Christian modesty for women has traditionally been longer skirts and dresses. A modest dress or skirt/top highlights the feminine parts of a woman’s body without being physically distracting to a man.

Let us examine all the images of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the MOST PURE ONE, highly favored by God. In all her images, her feminine waist is highlighted, and occasionally we see her rounded belly with the infant God. Her arms are covered, as well as her knees. Usually her head is veiled or crowned, but some images I have seen have her unveiled.

Can anyone imagine our Blessed Mother Mary, our highest example of purity, wearing a pair of jeans and a t-shirt? Never.

Under the title Our Lady of Good Success, she foretold that in the 20th century fashions would arise that would highly offend our Lord. Can anyone argue this statement today? Young girls become so accustomed to being uncovered except for torso, even babies, no one even questions anymore the idea of modesty for girls and women.

If you read the book Dressing with Dignity, you will find scientific evidence that men have a physical reaction to women wearing pants. Their eyes immediately lower to the area of highest privacy, whether they realize this or not.

Can a dress or skirt be immodest? Certainly. I think an honest look in the mirror will tell you whether or not our Dear Lord would be happy to have you dressed a certain way.

St. Anthony Mary Claret is one of the meekest, gentlest most joyous and lamblike of saints. 🙂 Anyone who reads his writings will find him so.

People who react whenever the word Jews is used in a negative context as if this is a sign of anti-semitism will have to toss most of the Catholic past, because in the Catholic history Jews often becomes a spiritual term to represent both the Jews who were faithful and the Jews who were unfaithful to Christ, and how we should be the former and not the latter.

This is not anything racial, nor immoral, it is a religious. But it is not politically correct, nor according to today’s standards often diplomatic. But it is Catholic so, choose your preference, world’s standards or Church. 🙂

And no I cannot imagine some of the above, save perhaps a modest traditional Japanese dress, nor should I want to as it would be inappropriate. I am not familiar with Russian folk fashion. 🙂

(name removed by moderator), why not start a thread on anti-semitism so we do not get sidetracked on this one about pants vs dresses/skirts. I am sorry I even commented on that remark now. The main idea is that of immodesty in his writings is accurate and applicable to today. The modesty is for one purpose, avoiding sin. There are many ways to sin related to clothing, including extravigance, lust, and scandal (against charity).

Look - my dear brothers and sisters: This is all basically rubbish. Women, dress modestly-period. Men, dress modestly, period. I understand there is some latitude and we may say “what is modesly?”. Stop it. We know what modestly means. Women can wear pants, that’s not the problem. Not at all. Just do not show it off! And we all know what that means. Men as well - do not show it off. Act in a general sense at the least. Women, don’t wear sexually exciting clothing - do not tittilate. It’s true, some folks are just perverted - God help them - and they will be tittilated no matter what a good lookin’ woman wears. This is true for some women as well. Notwithstanding these poor folk, and back to my original post, just don’t make excuses for it. Teeny bikinis are a no-no. Booty shorts should not be in a Christian woman’s vicinity. Cleavage should not**be shown under any circumstance. Men-watch those tighty tight jeans and jean shorts, etc. watch the from fitting tank tops. Women should not wear a tank top at all, if they are a Christian. What I am saying is- it’s true that there is no list of rules (what I say above is just some arbitrary guidelines.) Use your head and be honest - if what you wear is in any way sexually exciting - burn it with every other demonic thing. Dress happily - availing ourselves of the millions of nice outfits we can wear that make us handsome people and at once seperate us from the slutty contingent of our times.
-always in Love, Sean. 🙂

The saint is merely paraphrasing scripture, and in fact Popes and Councils. So. As I said, pick who you side with. You want to start a thread, feel free, but I will not be contributing. Such threads are quickly shut down on Catholic Answers.

You are not a saint, but you are quick to judge them. Perhaps you should approach these matters more humbly and less in your own cultural blindness. 🙂

I have my doubts about that particular costume above being appropriate, its emphasis is not altogether good. Perhaps others might be better perhaps not. 🙂

rudy792, you said “Look - my dear brothers and sisters: This is all basically rubbish. Women, dress modestly-period. Men, dress modestly, period.”

I see wisdom in that remark. To that end, modesty is multi-faceted: speech, behavior, and appearance. It supports solidarity of Christians and expresses dignity, sensitivity to others embarassment, temperance, discretion, chastity, humility, and resists fashion and ideologies that oppose grace.

Thanks, to Vico, for those Pope Piux XI’s quotes. I think the borderline is thin - the line between women wanting to be “in style” and causing sin. Let’s face it - a mini-skirt is what it is - revealing. Same can be said for anything (pants especially) too tight or revealing. I could never see a problem with pants, so long as they were not tight or revealing, and skirt lengths to the knee, which to our modern-day’s-eyes appear to be quite “clean” in motive. But apparently, according to accounts mentioned here, Padre Pio painfully turned women away from the confessional because of their mode of dress. Can you imagine waiting hours - as was said the waiting time was for Padre Pio’s confessional - just to be turned away? Makes you wonder where those women are today - and if they changed their mode of dress as a result.

(name removed by moderator), you said: “…I feel that was a judgemental remark itself as you did not ascertain what my culture was.”

I am sorry if I made that remark. I think it was somebody else though.

There is the issue of women wearing clothes that are similar to men’s, the unisex look. You can see in the illustration three lengths of garments (ankle, knee, mid-thigh) contrasting female vs male fit (due to general differences in the hips, which does not always apply). Generally, the first six drawings are female. The shading due to the shadows and crease between the legs, draws the eye there for anaylsis, and we determine the dimensions and sex of the wearer.

Where is the kilt for the men?

A man after St Francis’ heart…in his day the well to do sat in the front of the church all dressed up while the poor stood in the back of the church…all of this made a big impression on him. All those who were dressed up scorned and looked down upon those who were in literal rags and smelled from the fields. These threads always make me think of that. While some people may ague that women in most cases can wear a modest dress, though not fancy to church…one has to ask “how do you know?” You don’t know we should be worshipping God in church, not looking at everyone else-I was taught that in grade 2. There is a reason for this saying: “never judge a book by its cover”. Although I do agree it would be quite inappropriate for a man to wear a dress to mass.
